Everyday Mathematics Month-by-Month Overview Kindergarten Regular School Year

Everyday Mathematics Kindergarten activities require 60 minutes of mathematics per day divided among daily routines, core whole group and small group activities, math centers, teaching options activities, and games. In addition to the content standards, all Everyday Mathematics lessons address the process standards: problem solving, representations, reasoning and proof, connections, and communication. Months Key Mathematical Activities Early Introduce math materials such as pattern blocks, coins, and other manipulatives September Develop counting skills through multi-sensory activities and games Early Build familiarity with numbers 0-9 October Introduce sorting by attributes (Section 1) Introduce patterning Introduce graphing Explore measurement by comparing lengths Introduce volume Establish Daily Routines Mid Explore 2-dimensional shapes October Reinforce spatial relations vocabulary and concepts Early Nov. Introduce symmetry (Section 2) Develop understanding of teen numbers Develop counting and numeral recognition skills Introduce number writing through tactile and kinesthetic activities Introduce estimation Introduce number stories Continue patterning, graphing, and measurement comparison activities Mid Nov. Introduce addition and subtraction concepts through concrete activities Mid Dec. Introduce number writing (Section 3) Reinforce and extend counting, number recognition and comparison skills Introduce skip counting by 10s Introduce the pan balance Introduce non-standard measurement tools and units for measuring length Introduce the basic language of probability Continue shape recognition, patterning, and graphing activities Continue estimation and number story activities Mid Dec. Introduce addition and subtraction symbols and terminology Late Introduce calculators January Introduce attribute blocks (Section 4) Introduce Whats My Rule? activities Continue patterning activities using pattern blocks and templates Explore 2-D shapes and symmetry Reinforce and extend counting, number recognition, and writing skills Reinforce number sequencing and comparison skills Continue graphing, measuring, estimation, and probability activities
