Acting Deputy Principal's Report

An old Maori saying goes as follows: He aha te mea nui? He tangata. He tangata. He tangata. What is the most important thing? It is people, it is people, it is people. Over the last two weeks we have been able to delight in the success of many of our Morrinsville Intermediate students. They are a very talented bunch and it is always pleasing to see a small Morrinsville school doing so well on the wider stage. We have seen some of our students competing at the Great Waikato spelling bee performing with distinction, others as finalists in the school speech finals and going on to win the Rotary speech cup. Other students with a real interest and passion for science qualified for the East Waikato Science and technology fair and won major prizes. Our Gymnasts were placed third in the national intermediate AIMS competition - an outstanding result. While our Kapa Haka has just performed admirably at the Piako Cultural festival.

M.I.S. Kapa Haka performing

It is clear that such success is due to many factors including skill and lots of hard work. However it is also due to the enormous dedication and commitment of so many people; teachers, parents, family members, all who are prepared to coach, encourage, equip and support our young students in a variety of different ways to enable them to achieve. It is often said that It takes a community to raise a child. Morrinsville Intermediate is such a community. Thanks to the parents who come in each week and read with our students, to the mums and dads who coach our sports teams, sew on badges, fix kapa haka uniforms, to those who transport students to various events, and those who work tirelessly raising funds, to the parents who regularly attend board and committee meetings, and to the family members who are prepared to stand up and work with the school to support those students who, for what ever reason, find themselves struggling. Our success is your success. It is great to be part of such a wonderful team and be surrounded by so many delightful people. This, for me, is the real secret behind all we have been able to achieve and the key component towards producing even greater results in the future. Wishing you all a relaxing and safe term break. The last day of Term Three is tomorrow and school finishes at the usual time of 3.10pm. School starts again for Term Four on Monday 14th October. Charles Hume Acting Deputy Principal

Summer Uniform Sandals

All MIS students will be required to wear summer uniform sandals from the start of term four. A reminder that all MIS students (boys and girls) are required to wear traditional, regulation black roman sandals during the summer terms. These roman sandals can be purchased for around $40.00. Please be aware of cheap imitations as they tend to break easily which increases the costs in the long run. Parents are encouraged to use the upcoming school holidays as an opportunity to make sure all uniform items are in good condition for the last term of the year including skirt lengths. Thank you.

NZ AIMS Games Competition

The NZCT AIMS Games sporting championships give 11, 12 and 13 year olds an opportunity to compete as an individual or in a team against the best of their age in sixteen different sports and is considered the International Championships for Intermediate and Middle schools involving 164 schools from throughout New Zealand and Australia. This year MIS entered in Tennis and Gymsport and they competed extremely well. Carlin Vollebregt played tennis from Monday to Wednesday, winning 4 out of 6 matches. He played boys from Pukekohe, Albany, Nelson, Australia, Tauranga and Rotorua. Carlin had some tough matches lasting over 1 and a half hours, he played extremely well, representing the school well both on and off the court. Carlin's overall ranking for the tournament was 25th out of 58 boys. It was an amazing event which started right from the opening ceremony where the guest speaker was Dylan Boucher from the Breakers Basketball team, he was such an inspirational speaker. The Gymsport Team competed on Tuesday and Thursday of last week. Congratulations to the Twister Team (Monique Mellow, Danielle Mellow, Sara Keightley and Kate Hutchings) who received a Bronze Award! Other MIS results were as follows: Jessica Pavlovich was awarded 4th place overall in the Twisters Open Grade. Alex Devonport placed 5th overall in the Open Junior Competition and Grace Christie placed 6th= overall.

Netball: Thank you to all of the coaches, managers, umpires and supporters who gave up their time to support our
M.I.S netballers. Your help and time were much appreciated and we as a school are very thankful for having such amazing parents and whanau. Netball Uniform Bonds are now available for students to collect from the office. Your uniform must have been returned clean and undamaged to receive your $10 bond.

Piako Cultural Festival: What an amazing festival that David Street School, staff and whanau held last Thursday.
Our school Kapa Haka were fired up and ready to perform. After a special tribute was given, the group represented M.I.S. proudly and loudly with their waiata, rakau and haka. These were all enjoyed by the huge crowd who clapped and cheered after our groups performance. A huge congratulations to our M.I.S. Kapa Haka ropu, who represented themselves, their school and their Whanau with pride - Tumeke! We would like to thank Julie Webby for helping with the sewing of our kakahu, Teresa Higham for being a parent helper on the day, Matua Ed and Aunty Tarn for their knowledge, aroha, support and encouragement over the year. And last, but not least, thank you to our M.I.S. whanau who came to support us. Nga mihi Natalia Taylor, Brenda Te Wiata and Jimmy Heta. Next term on Friday the 18th October, 20 M.I.S. students will be participating in the ANZA Challenge. The ANZA Challenge is a unique and engaging charitable event. M.I.S. Sports Day: To correspond with ANZA we are looking to hold a sports day here at school. There will be 10
different stations such as softball, volleyball, ki-o-rahi, fitness tests, touch rugby, cricket, and a presentation on sport and nutrition. We are lucky to have Sport Waikato and Team Energizer people coming in to help on the day and to share their knowledge and expertise of health and fitness. More information will follow in the first week. Parents and whanau if you are able to help out on the day, please let me know. Keep this day free families as it will be a great day!
