In brief
Appeal hearing date
A date has been announced for an informal hearing on plans to convert part of a barn into residential accommodation. The scheme, earmarked for Butterswood Farm in Soff Lane, Goxhill, was refused planning permission by North Lincolnshire Council in September. But the applicant, Robert Dawson, appealed against the decision and a hearing between the parties will be held on Tuesday, June 19 at 10am at the Civic Centre in Scunthorpe. It will be chaired by a Government-appointed planning inspector, who will then determine whether the project can go ahead.

I lost 9st to become a mum and now Im pregnant again

A woman who shed 15 stone after doctors told her to lose weight if she wanted to have a baby is pregnant with a second child. Clare Pawley tipped the scales at more than 27 stone just two-and-a-half-years ago, and was told by doctors that she would never be able to conceive naturally. Having been refused fertility treatment and fearing she would never have her own family, Clare, a GP administrator from Scunthorpe, adopted a baby. The death of her grandmother led to comfort eating, with Clares weight escalating to its heaviest reaching 27 stone and 9lb. But Clare felt she was not being the mother her adopted daughter deserved and so re-joined Slimming World. Despite having a miscarriage, she was determined to conquer a life-long struggle with her weight. She ate healthily, dropped nine stone and discovered she was pregnant on her 12th wedding anniversary.

Tribute to teen after body found

FROM PAGE ONE Tyler had many friends and was popular with the girls all of whom he stayed friends with after relationships ended, she said. The friends he went to Blarney Stone with said he was happy, drinking, chatting to girls the normal Tyler. Grandfather Michael, 62, said: He was loved, athletic, he always wanted to run before he could walk. He would have crashes on his BMX and come in with bruises all over from where hed jumped up walls and ramps at the park on Burringham Road. A balloon release was held on Tuesday at Everest Park in Scunthorpe, where around 40 friends gathered to write on balloons before releasing them into the sky in Tylers memory. Tyler has relatives in Scunthorpe including father Martyn Hewitt, stepmother Katie, two stepbrothers, Harry and Reece, and grandmother Kay. He also has various aunties and uncles in Canada and Scunthorpe. His family in Canada are travelling over for the funeral and even some of Tylers close friends in Canada have spent their savings on a plane ticket to say farewell. A celebration of Tylers life will be held on Tuesday, May 1 at 9.30am at Woodlands Crematorium, Scunthorpe. The death is not being treated as suspicious and the police will be putting a file together for the coroner. A spokesman for the coroners office said: We are still waiting for the full details from the police and the outcome from tests to establish everything. Jane Hurley, Tylers form tutor at Melior Community College, said: He was a lovely lad, a really smashing lad who was very friendly. When he left to go to Canada he would always come back and see us, send us e-mails and pictures of how he was getting on. He will be sadly missed by everyone. His mum is such a lovely woman and our thoughts go out to her and the rest of the family.

Dont leave it so late in life like I did

Clare Pawley

Now the 40-year-old is celebrating after losing more than 15 stone and falling pregnant with her second child. She said: In April last year, our little miracle arrived safe and well and although she is here, I still cant believe that this has happened to us after all these years. Im not sure that it will ever sink in that she is ours. We have a bigger family now with two special children and another one on the way. The consultants were right after all. They said to lose

weight and things might happen naturally. Clare stayed at Slimming World throughout her entire first pregnancy in order to maintain a healthy weight and got back her pre-pregnancy figure in just three months. After losing even more weight and getting down to a size 12/14, she discovered she was pregnant again. Five months into her second pregnancy, Clare now weighs in at 12 stone 11lb, but plans to shed weight after the birth. Now Clare wants to urge people in a similar situation to do something about it. She said: Please dont be ashamed of your weight. Just feel proud that you can do something about it. Dont leave it so late in life like I did. Lawrence Roberts, consultant obstetrician and clinical director of maternity and gynaecology at Scunthorpe General Hospital, said: Obesity is now rivalling smoking as the commonest threat that we see to the health of a pregnancy. Overweight women may have reduced fertility. If pregnant, such patients are automatically referred for hospital-based care, are at risk of vitamin deficiencies and diabetes, require a higher level of medical intervention and suffer an increased risk of complications arising from those interventions. The effectiveness of ultrasound in diagnosing fetal abnormalities and other complications of pregnancy is significantly diminished. We would strongly recommend that anyone contemplating pregnancy follows Clares example and manages their weight. Clare is due to give birth on Friday, August 31.

Flooding fears over plans to build detached house

Plans to replace a bungalow with a five-bedroom detached house in West Butterwick have been criticised by an objector. A scheme has been submitted to North Lincolnshire Council requesting planning permission for the project, earmarked for land at 26 West Street in the village. If passed, it would sit next to land where permission has already been granted for 30 homes, despite a 13-year campaign by residents against the development on flood risk grounds. A flood risk assessment submitted with the application to replace the bungalow states the land is in an area of low risk, where the risk of flooding each year is 0.5 per cent or less. But Bernard Page, of West Street, said it should not proceed without a flood risk assessment being done on the scheme for 30 homes, which was given the go-ahead in 2003. He said: To pursue this project, particularly without a flood risk assessment on the 30 units, is sheer folly, with much dampness and running sand already present under the surface. The scheme is currently under consideration by planning officers at North Lincolnshire Council. A consultation response from the Environment Agency revealed it had no objections to the development, as long as it is carried out in accordance with the flood risk assessment prepared by GDP Planning, acting as agents for the applicant, Peter Colebrook. The assessment includes mitigation measures such as limiting the surface water run-off, incorporating flood proofing measures and setting finished floor levels at least six metres above the existing ground level. Planning officers at the council are expected to make a decision as to whether the project can proceed by Tuesday, May 1.

Car found on its roof

A car was found on its roof down an embankment after a crash in Elsham. The female driver of a Ford Fiesta was taken to hospital after an accident on the A15 near Elsham at around 11am on Tuesday, April 24. The fire service assisted paramedics in transferring the casualty to a spinal board and then into an ambulance. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
