Foreword
This British Standard has been prepared by Technical Committee STI/28. It supersedes BS 4756:1971, which is withdrawn. It incorporates certain specific requirements of Defence Specification DEF 1418. Paints conforming to this British Standard are designed for application by brush to exterior or interior wood. It is generally recommended that where paints conforming to this British Standard are applied to exterior wood, they are overcoated as soon as is practical. It has been found that if they are allowed to weather, the adhesion of subsequent coats of paints can be adversely affected. The paints as specified are ready for use and additional thinners should not be added.

Depending on whether leafing or non-leafing aluminium pigment is used, the paints may produce a bright or dull aluminium finish. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations.

5 Sample
For assessing conformity to the requirements of clauses 7 to 11, representative samples of the material, of not less than 250 ml, shall be taken and packed in the manner described in BS EN 21512.
BSI 1998
BS 4756:1998
6 Reference sample
By test and agreement, a sample shall be accepted as meeting all the requirements of clauses 4 and 7 to 11, and shall be the reference sample. The sample shall not be less than 250 ml and shall be packed in the manner described in BS EN ISO 1513.
7 Consistency
The material shall be in such a condition that stirring easily produces a smooth, uniform mixture, suitable for application by brushing.
11 Keeping properties
The material, when stored at normal room temperature in its original sealed containers, shall retain the properties detailed in clauses 7 to 10 for a period of not less than 12 months from the date of dispatch to the purchaser. The material shall show no evidence of gassing when stored over the same period.

8 Drying time
When tested in the manner described in annex A, the material shall become dry for recoating in not more than 24 h and the appearance of the undercoated panel shall be similar to that of a panel prepared from the reference sample, when tested in a similar way.
12 Marking
Each container shall be clearly marked with the following information: a) the manufacturer's name, trade mark and product designation; b) the method of application; c) the recommended spreading rate, expressed in square metres per litre; d) the number and date of this British Standard, i.e. BS 4756:19981); e) the batch number and/or date of manufacture.
1) Marking BS 4756:1998 on or in relation to a product represents a manufacturer's declaration of conformity, i.e. a claim by or on behalf of the manufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is solely the claimant's responsibility. Such a declaration is not to be confused with third-party certification of conformity, which may also be desirable.

Annex A (normative) Method of test for drying time over both untreated and preservative-treated wood
A.1 Preparation of test panels A.1.1 Wood The panels shall be made from straight-grained European redwood or home-grown Scots pine of normal growth rate (3 to 8 annual growth rings per 10 mm), free from knots, shakes, resinous streaks, visible blue fungal infection and abnormal porosity due to bacterial attack during storage. The inclination of the growth rings shall be 08 to 458.
NOTE Abnormal porosity can be detected qualitatively by the rapid absorption of a drop of propan-2-ol applied to a smooth surface. The drop is not absorbed in less than 30 s by wood of normal porosity.
Prepare a test solution by dissolving Fast Red B salt in deionized water at a concentration of 5 g/l. Use the freshly prepared solution immediately. Heartwood is indicated by the development of a deep red colour, which usually shows within approximately 10 min. WARNING. Fast Red B salt has no reported mutagenic or teratogenic effects; however, it should be treated as a suspected carcinogen. Reference should be made to the relevant health and safety data sheets. A.2 Procedure A.2.1 General One test panel is required for priming paint conforming to the compositional requirements (see clause 4) of type 1, and two test panels for type 2, one of which shall be treated with preservative in accordance with A.2.2 before application of the priming paint. A.2.2 Painting Apply the priming paint to each panel to give a dried film mass of 20 g/m2 to 30 g/m2. Expose the panels to dry in a vertical position, at a temperature of (20 2) 8C and a relative humidity of (65 5) %, in accordance with ISO 554, for 24 h; then apply a coat of white undercoat, conforming to BS 7664, by brush, to the dried film. Examine each panel for signs of disturbance of the dried film. The priming film is dry for recoating if the coat of undercoat can be applied satisfactorily . Re-examine the undercoated panels after they have been allowed to dry vertically for 24 h at a temperature of (20 2) 8C and a relative humidity of (65 5) %. A.2.3 Preservative treatment (for type 2 only) For priming paint conforming to the compositional requirements of type 2, treat the second test panel with a copper naphthenate preservative solution conforming to type F8 of BS 5707:1997, Table 1, prior to application of the primer. Immerse the panel for 3 min in the preservative solution, and then allow it to dry with free access of air for 24 h, at a temperature of (20 2) 8C and a relative humidity of (65 5) % in accordance with ISO 554. If the test panel, whilst immersed in the preservative solution, shows excessive escape of air, discard it as being too porous.

The wood shall be conditioned at a temperature of (20 2) 8C and a relative humidity of (65 5) % in accordance with ISO 554, until the moisture content of the wood has reached equilibrium. Any wood showing surface splitting at this stage shall be rejected. A.1.2 Panels The panels shall be cut from sawn boards planed all round to approximately 375 mm 3 100 mm 3 20 mm, then machined to a smooth uniform finish. In order to achieve a clean finish to the end grain and to eliminate any tearing of fibres arising during cross-cutting, the following procedure shall be used. a) Flat-cut and thickness the wood to approximately 2 mm above the final thickness. b) Cross-cut the wood using a well sharpened and dressed tungsten carbide tipped circular saw. c) Carry out final surfacing of the test face on an overhand planer. d) Do not carry out further preparation, e.g. smoothing with abrasive paper or cloth. A.1.3 Selection Select the panels carefully to give a sapwood test surface on the convex side of the growth rings, with any heartwood confined to a band not exceeding 5 mm when measured from the rear face. If the presence of heartwood in selected timber cannot be detected by a difference in colour in the wood (heartwood is darker), it shall be checked by the brush application of a test solution to both the end grain and the faces of a small piece cut from the same length of wood.
