OBSERVATIONS

1. Unlike Psalm 23, Psalm 1 employs a plethora of clause initial conjunctions.
2. Consequently, the reader must stop, inquire and explain the syntactical function of each.
a. The clause initial waws in v. 1cd are disjunctive.
1) They serve to place the emphasis on the prepositional phrases.
2) The clause initial disjunctive clause in v. 1c also serves to form a chiasm.
b. The conjunction:s :in v. 2a comes after a series of adverbial negatives and, therefore, is contrastive. Cf.
Williams 447.
1) Williams opines that:s is pleonastic (cf. 457).
2) However, some read:s as conditional, which would explain v. 3 as a consequence.
c. The conjunction waw in v. 2b is coordinate and disjunctive; it places the emphasis on the initial prepositional phrase.
d. The clause initial WeQTL verb is problematic.
1) Obviously, the simple conjunction waw is coordinate.
2) However, the question is: which clause does it modify?
3) Moreover, is it also conversive?
e. The clause initial waw in v. 3d is disjunctive.
1) It places the emphasis on the subject.
2) Clause d functions as a subordinate clause that is coordinate with clause c.
f. The clause initial waw in v. 3e is also disjunctive.
1) A crucial questions is: who is the subject?
2) Another important question is: which clause does it modify?
3) Note that BHS wants to delete v. 3ef.
