Marks: 100 Instructions: Attempt all the questions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Qu.1.Attempt any four parts: 5x4=20 (a) Draw two transistor model of SCR and explain the same. (b) Draw symbols and V-I characteristics of following power electronic devices: a) GTO b) TRIAC c) SCR (c) Discuss the difference between: a) TRIAC and Thyristor b) MOSFET and IGBT (d) What causes unequal voltages among series connected SCRs during dynamic state. How is equal voltage sharing obtained in series connected SCRs during dynamic state. (e) Explain the di/dt and dv/dt protection of SCR. (f) Draw and explain the working of an UJT triggering circuit. Discuss how the amplitude of output voltage pulse can be estimated in same circuit. Qu.2. Attempt any two parts: 10x2=20 (a) What are the different methods of thyristor commutation? Give detailed explanation of resonant pulse commutation with relevant waveforms? (b) Give chopper classification. Explain the principle of operation of step-up chopper and derive an expression for output voltage. Mention its two applications. (c) Discuss various control strategies for operation of choppers. Why time ratio control is preferred? In a step up chopper feeding a resistive load, the average output voltage is 109V. The voltage drop across chopper switch, when it is on, is 2V. If the load resistance is 10Ohm and frequency of chopper operation is 20kHz. For duty ratio of 0.5, calculate: (i) DC input voltage to chopper (ii) The RMS output voltage (iii) Chopper efficiency (iv) Input resistance of the chopper. Qu.3. Attempt any two parts: 10x2=20 a) A single phase fully controlled bridge converter is connected to RLE load. The source voltage is 230V, 50Hz. The average current of 10A is continuous over the working range. For R=0.4, compute: (i) firing angle delay for E = 120V, (ii) firing angle delay for E = -120V. Indicate which source is delivering power in parts (i) and (ii). (iii) In case output current is assumed constant, find the input power factors for parts (i) and (ii)

Explain operation of a single phase fully controlled bridge converter feeding a highly inductive load. Draw waveforms of output voltage, load current and source current. What happens when source has inductance and discuss its effect on performance of converter.

c) What is meant by a dual converter? Explain operation of a dual converter using circulating current mode of working with the help of suitable diagrams. Discuss the use of centre tapped reactor. Qu.4. Attempt any two parts: 10x2=20

A 230V, 1kW electric heater is fed through a TRIAC from 230,50Hz AC source. Find the load power for a firing angle delay of 700. Derive the expression used for voltage. c) Explain working of a single phase bridge type cyclo-converter. (I) Explain operation of a single phase bridge inverter. Draw wave shapes of output voltage and current when: (i) Load is pure resistive (ii) Load is pure inductive. (iii) Load is RLC underdamped Under steady state operating conditions discuss the nature of these waveforms and indicate conduction of various elements of the inverter circuit. (II) A single phase full bridge inverter has a resistive load of 10 ohm and the dc input voltage of 220V. Determine: (i) RMS output voltage at fundamental frequency (ii) Output power (iii) Average current of each device (iv) Total harmonic distortion

(b) Describe the operation of three phase bridge inverter with 180 mode of operation. Draw waveforms of phase voltages and line voltages. Assuming delta connected resistive load. (c) (i) Explain working of single phase current source inverter with the help of relevant waveforms. (ii) Discuss advantages of sinusoidal pulse width modulation over multiple pulse width Modulation. Draw the waveforms for sinusoidal pulse width modulation.
