From the Principal

Sport has been the winner this last fortnight. After a false start we managed to complete our faction carnival in blistery conditions last Tuesday. Thank you Mr John and Mrs Baldey for your great organisation, it was lovely to have our own carnival again and the tabloid format was a hit with kids and parents alike. Once again the P&C did a fantastic job providing coffee, cakes and lunches for all. Thanks to all of the P&C members and volunteers and those that helped with the tents, PA and general set up on the morning. Winning Faction for 2013 - Black

School Development Days 2013 - (Pupil Free)

Monday 14th October Tuesday 15th October

Yesterday we competed in an interschool athletics carnival at East Hamersley Hill. All of our year 4s to 7 attended and participated, as well as a few brave grade 2 and 3s. The day was enjoyed by everyone and our students were proud and sportsman like competitors. Congratulations to Mitchell Hewitt who won year 4 Champion boy and Anthony Miojevic who won year 6 Champion boy. Winterfold Primary were overall champions. Planning class structures for 2014 If you are interested in understanding the complexities of planning class structures and teacher selection, Belinda and I will be sharing our thoughts and plans at this point in time on October 29th between 5 and 6pm in the Art room. The P&C are sponsoring our gathering by kindly donating some drinks and nibbles. In order for our planning to be accurate it is important for us to know if your children will not be returning to North Fremantle in 2014. If you have not already notified us, please complete the slip below or email your intentions to NorthFremantle.PS@det.wa.edu.au Students leaving North Fremantle PS for 2014 Childs name: _________________________ Year level 2013 __________ Childs name: _________________________ Year level 2013 __________ Childs name: _________________________ Year level 2013 __________ Destination in 2014 (if known): ___________________________________

Room 1 & 2 - Lisa Miller and Liz Smith

On Tuesday Kindy and Pre-primary went to the Zoo. It was a perfect day to visit as it wasnt too hot and the rain stayed away for most of the time. It was a very busy day. We had a Bush Party with our Zoo friend, Jen, where we read a story and dressed up as some of the characters, ate our picnic lunch on the main lawn area and walked around looking at all the animals. Some of the animals we saw were Tricia the elephant, penguins, lions, meerkats and the orangutans. A few of our friends even visited the Nocturnal House.

Thank you to our Parent Helpers who helped make our day the success it was and to all our parents for sending the children along with appropriate footwear. We did a lot of walking!! It was a fantastic day that was enjoyed by all.
We also wrote recounts of our trip, this is Daniels. Whos hiding behind these echidnas?

On Wednesday, our work was zoo-related. We did maths problem-solving activities using zoo-animals, our problem-solving

Room 3 - Bev Lane Not long to the holidays (not that were counting!) We have been working very hard this week, skip-counting by tens, practising our individual spelling lists, focussing on the sounds made by the letter G, learning about sound waves and playing ultimate tag which is as much fun as the name implies. Were still learning to use money so perhaps practising with change over the holidays might help. Speaking of holidays, we wish everyone has a healthy, happy and safe break and look for ward to seeing you next term. Our photo today is part of a poster we are making to remind everyone to wear their uniforms to school.

Room 4 - Rochelle Reeves

In the last 2 weeks we have been doing the finishing touches to our Pre primary books. With Mrs Campbell, our class has learnt about waterborne diseases and have also been learning about percentages of water on the earth. 3% of the earths water is fresh water and 97% is salt water. George the Quokka has been having a fantastic time visiting our houses. He is currently visiting Karijini with Lara. Our Class has been getting more excited about the school holidays each day but we are even more excited about the Dockers in the grand final on Saturday. In English we have been making our writing neater and more interesting. Room 4 have been having lots of fun and we hope that will continue in term 4.

Room 5 - Chris John The last fortnight has been an extremely busy time in Room 5 as we wrap up our science unit on the states of matter by interacting with the most challenging substance to define: Oublek. Made of only cornflour, water and food colouring, this slime acts like a liquid when left to sit, flowing freely into different containers and taking their shape, but then acts like a solid under pressure, hardening when picked up, struck, thrown or even smashed. The students found this out not only by feeling and hitting it but dropping tennis balls onto it and throwing it off the balcony where it shattered. Weve also been watching Finding Nemo to study the visual effects film-makers use, such as gaze, salience (position and camera angles), colour and tone, to make the viewer respond in different ways. Room 7 - Brent Snook This week we have been participating in the culminating activities from our novel Storm Boy by Colin Thiele. We watched the movie on Monday and noticed many differences between the movie and the novel, including how the characters were portrayed, particularly Hide-Away Tom, Storm Boys father. The students presented their Storm Boy monologues to the class on Tuesday. The amount of work that they put into creating their monologues and their settings was very impressive. It was so good to see the students really thinking about a particular event from their characters point-of-view and also the thought they put into the costume. We are all looking forward to our excursion on Friday to see the stage production of Storm Boy!

Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to all that travelled to East Hamilton Hill Primary on the 25th of September to take part in the Interschool Athletics Carnival. We ended up coming sixth overall and fifth in the teams event trophy but the highlights for us were our enthusiasm and never-say-die spirit, especially the Year 6 team winning the Year 7 passball event and the Year 4 boys pulling together to win their 4 x 75 metre relay. Thank you to all the parents who assisted with transport and support. Special congratulations to Mitch Hewitt, Year 4 Champion Boy, and Anthony Miojevic, Year 6. Thanks to the P&C for the purchase of such a fantastic shade tent which provided plenty of protection to our students and supporters on this and all future events.

Fremantle Festival Parade

Art NewsMargie Campbell As you will all be aware we are in the depths of constructing costumes for the Fremantle Festival Parade. Most headpieces are done, wings are happening and amulets and armour are in the works for many. Your child may wish to collect useful items for these constructions during the holidays. (Generally junk from the recycling bin, black or white). They may have also chosen to bring their headdress home to work on, have fun. Thank you to the wonderful stream of parents that I have had working in the art classes, it is of enormous benefit for the children to have extra adult hands. It encourages them to think outside the box with your careful questions. They also have the ability to take on more complicated designs as they have an adult to join cable ties, add on beaks etc. On top of it all they just LOVE having someone there with them. Happy, happy holidays, if you are around during the holidays perhaps you will have the opportunity to visit an exhibition or an art gallery. There is a photographic exhibition on of the Abrolhos Islands at the Maritime Museum currently. The West Australian Art Gallery has the WESTERN AUSTRALIAN INDIGENOUS ART AWARDS 23 August 2013 - 27 January 2014. Enjoy, Mrs Campbell. Nick Kirkbride from Coastal tennis will be back in Term 4 offering before school Tennis Lessons. Lessons will be conducted on a Wednesday Morning 7.40-8.40am for Years PP-3, and on Friday mornings 7.40-8.40am for Years 4-7. Please pick up a form from the front office or visit the Coastal Tennis website www.coastaltennis.com.au and follow the schools link. All enquiries phone Nick - 0419 923 495
