Theres simply lots to discover in Kingston. A 20-minute train ride from Londons Waterloo Railway Station to Surbiton gives you the choice to stay in either Kingston or Thames Ditton for both are in equal walking distance. We opted for London Kingston South Holiday Inn (just one mile from Surbiton and two miles from Kingston) overlooking the River Thames. The 116-room hotel offered the perfect setting for our stay our executive room boasting a balcony. We chose to dine at the hotels River View Restaurant, indulging in the new Delhvi all you can eat banquet night prepared and cooked by award-winning chef Bhaskar Banerjee who brought the delights and traditions of culture of Delhi to our tastebuds (18.95 every Friday night). After a spicy soup pre-starter we were given a selection of samosas and salad. For main course we had the opportunity to sample eight different Indian dishes ranging from the mild and the vegetarian to the mouth-watering hot. To complement the dishes we could choose from rice, naan bread, pickles and poppadoms. For dessert we were invited to delve into more traditional Indian dishes with the promise of an English pudding if we decided we didnt like it. And to our surprise we were bowled over with the flavours and textures of the golden fried milk dumpling filled with honey and the Indian cheese dumpling in sweetened

milk and nuts, as well as an Indian twist on ice cream. Next morning, after a full cooked breakfast, we set out for nearby Hampton Court Palace. Stood in the grounds of Henry VIIIs great Tudor palace, half survives; the rest was rebuilt by William III as a baroque palace, which looks just as inviting as the 60 acres of gardens. We arrived just in time to go on a journey back in time with the role-play tour guides who wore authentic costumes, spoke the traditional lingo and brought the history to life in front of our eyes. The tour took us through the roles of those who would have worked at the palace in days gone by, including a look around the kitchens and spell at the doctors. From the royal procession of King Henry VIIIs wee and stools to the doctor giving his formal diagnosis, our imaginations were kept alive with the props and tomfoolery unfolding around us. Its the first time I have experienced a guided tour like this and I found it much more captivating than reading fact sheets and gazing into cabinets.
