I am very excited to introduce the guest facilitator for THE WAY starting on October 9th. Id like you to hear him in his own words so you can get to know him better... a day) and I have done three hikes in the Grand Canyon in the last ten years, all the way to Phantom Ranch and back out again in one day each of those times. Why did I do it? Just as a personal challenge and to stick my finger in the eye of that notorious beast known as getting older. Heres some of the territory you are going to explore:

My name is Ken Brown and Ive been a pastor for more than three decades. I have been married to my wife, Margie, for longer than that and we have two daughters and six grandchildren. We moved to Fountain Hills a year ago to get closer to our daughters and their families: one lives in Flagstaff and the other in San Diego. In addition to being a pastor I have done corporate training and I served as the National Coordinator for the Veritas Forum for three years, an outreach to major university campuses all across the U.S. Ive also written three books that have been published and my claim to fame was an interview I did on The OReilly Factor on the Fox News Channel, in addition to dozens of other TV and radio interviews. My personal mission statement is, I want to live my life to change lives and my preaching mission statement is, I want to demonstrate that the Bible is relevant to your life. Currently, I am working on three books: a novel, a book entitled Truths that Grab Me and Wont Let Me Go, and a book I call Byte-Sized Truth. Plus, to stay active I have walked every single day for the last four years and two months (a minimum of thirty minutes

People want God to be fair. I want God to treat me the way I deserve to be treated, they might say. But remember: be careful what you wish for. "Selfhelp is nothing more than idolatry dressed up in a rented tuxedo," one popular pastor argues. Selfmade people end up worshiping their maker. So, if theres a deadly sickness lurking there, whats the cure? "The statistics on death are quite impressive, George Bernard Shaw quipped. One out of one people die." So the question is, How do you and I come to grips with the grim reaper?

Income for August approximated Budget, with some positive factors offsetting negative ones. Year-to-Date Income for the Church shows we are still $15,972 ahead of Budget but we expect some of the favorable outcome to dissipate as the year draws to a close. Expenses for August were actually on target, as the unfavorable variance reflected above is largely attributable to a timing difference. Vigilance is still the operative word for Expenses. In general, we are tracking favorably so far in calendar year 2013.

Music Ministry
Alright, folks are coming into place. All of the groups that make up our Music Ministry are in full swing, rehearsing, preparing, engaging with each other with the love God has given us. God has given us this opportunity to put our heart and soul into His love as one of Christs' people, with His spirit circulating through us helping us Debbie Fisher, Director of Music through the process. What a nourishing experience! Often folks will come into rehearsal fatigued, overworked, stressed by thoughts about certain uncontrollable situations only to leave a rehearsal feeling refreshed just by the experience of being together. There are certain text, rhythms, intonation, and challenges of a certain measure or two which can bring the mind into a different realm of thought and meaning, providing an outlook that can be so different than when a person walks in. I love to watch and experience human transformation. The Celebration Singers are so excited about singing the Christmas portion of "The Messiah." I am, as well! The music is so magnificent. We began rehearsing it the first evening of rehearsal. It is challenging, exciting, and definitely invigorating. If you have performed this masterful work before and would like to join us, we rehearse on Thursday evenings, from 6:30 to 8:00, and would love to have you join in our music ministry. We are certainly not be the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, but we will love singing every note just as much as each one of them do. We have fine and great quality voices, and our soloists are looking forward to singing their portion before the congregation in the worship service on Dec. 22.. The Pearwood Recorders have also been in rehearsal since September, meeting on Thursday's, at 4:00 p.m.. We have been together for approx. 10 years, with a few of us there since the beginning under the Direction of Barbara Wyman. It is such an interesting group, with music that provokes timeless thought. We have asked Wendy Dachel to Direct the group. She has been playing with us for approx. 6 yrs. playing the tenor recorder. She will also have the time to hold extra rehearsals for any newcomers interested in joining the group, so, if you are interested, please contact me and we will get you together. It is good to be together again. We have so much to gain from it. I look forward to every rehearsal, every challenging passage of music, and could not ask for better people to work through them with. with a John Grisham novel too. But would you? So what does that tell us about the Good Book? Im convinced that there are two keys to emotional health. Essentially, they are both Get out of Jail Free cards. But, if thats true, then who or what has you imprisoned?

John 3:16 is to the Bible what the sun is to our solar system. It reveals how much you and I are worth to God. Now, if thats true, doesnt that mean that our lives and our sense of self-worth ought to revolve around the S-ON?. People hear us talk about salvation as a free gift and they think, So youre saying, `Its cheap! But there was a colossal price paid. So who paid that price and why? Some folks grumble that, You can make the Bible say anything you want it to say. However, you can do that

Mission Ministry
Dont forget the Friday night Jim Bobs Fish Fry. The cost has gone up this year to $11.99 each. All profits go to the EHFB to help those people with needs other than food, this could be gift cards for electric or water or some other need. They also have a used clothing facility out by the EHFB. This is called Maxs Closet, for those of you wishing to donate clothing. There are so many people here in Fountain Hills in need of so much. Thank you to Nancy Wulfmeier, Vivian Virden, Susan Owens and Terri Schmidt for helping out at the Fish Fry on September 6, 2013. We have committed to helping at the Fish Fry the first Fridays of the month. If this something you might be interested in, you can contact Susan or Terri. SWATT Our newly formed SWATT group is collecting food to help those High School kids who need food. It has been brought to our attention that many HS kids dont get breakfast or lunch for various reasons. We have committed to collect a few items for the School nurse to put into a bag. They can come in and grab a bag with no questions asked. We are collecting individual juice boxes or non refrigerated Chocolate milk boxes, breakfast bars (granola bars), individual bags of nuts, crackers with cheese or peanut butter, and fruit roll ups, as well as 8 oz. bottles of water. These things will give the kids some substance to get them through their school day. There are several churches collecting also, and we will take them to the school nurse. Thank you in advance for helping us with this project. Future Projects Last month we asked for volunteers to help make Christmas stockings, we have decided we will buy the stockings and have people decorate them as they fill them. We will let you know more about this at a later date. These stockings are going to the children down at the Changing Lives Center, this is the sister center to the Phoenix Rescue Shelter. We will be helping with Fort McDowell again this year as they buy Christmas presents for a less fortunate tribe. We did this last year and were able to help a tribe in Northeastern Arizona. Again I will let you know the details, as we get closer to Christmas. We will be doing an Angel tree again this year also. This tree buys for kids here in Fountain Hills that are less fortunate and might not get a Christmas gift otherwise. When we get the information from the schools, we will be sure and get the information to you all. This pretty much tells you what we are up to in Missions. If this is something that you feel you would like to get involved in, please contact Susan Owens or Terri Schmidt. Someone dear to me, recently quoted to me this phrase that I think is so great, It is good to do the Lords work, but better still to do his will. Thank you to all of you who so graciously give when we ask. May God continue to bless each of you.

Terri Schmidt and Susan Owens, Elders Life stops when you stop dreaming. Hope stops when you stop believing. Love ends when you stop caring, and friendship ends when you stop sharing. These are words that we should all try and live by. Here in Mission Ministry we want to help keep people dreaming and believing, even when things get so bad there does not seem to be a solution. We care enough to help and share what we have to keep those dreams alive. Heifer Project As I have reported in our previous newsletter, we are continuing our Heifer Project through Easter. But this month I want to share with you the good news that we have had two young people from our Vacation Bible School that have brought me their piggy banks. We sent these banks home with all the kids so they could continue to raise money for this project. These two wonderful children have brought in approximately $30.00. I am so proud of these two and am so excited to see how our Vacation Bible School has impacted the children, even after the excitement of the week has worn off. As the money is counted in the end, I will be sure and ask these two what their wishes for this money should go towards. We will continue collecting any money you wish to give, make sure it is noted on the check or a note with the money stating it is for the Heifer Project. But if you wish to give a specific gift in honor of someone or as a gift for someone, you can do this also. Information is on the table in the Narthex, or you can ask Susan Owens or Terri Schmidt any questions you may have. Extended Hands Food Bank We will be pushing for Breakfast cereals for Kids this month. When we asked Pastor David Iverson of EHFB what was needed, he said they were exceptionally low on cereals. This means cold cereals as well as instant oatmeal. We will continue collecting other food, but we will just ask you to buy an extra box or two of cereal. We here at Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church are such giving people with such big hearts, Pastor Iverson has told me on several occasions how pleased he is with our church.

MISSION PROJECT HOLIDAY BOXES FOR OUR TROOPS
The month of October begins the time to fill up our Troops Donation Box located in the Narthex, for our Holiday Boxes to be sent late November to our Troops deployed in the far remote, mountainous areas of Afghanistan. These remote areas consist of our military being stationed mostly in tents and/or huts. Some are lucky enough to have electricity, others are not, and some only get a couple of meals a day. A box of Christmas Cards will be available on the big round table in the Narthex. Please grab a box, take it home and sign a little note. Please add the name of our Church beneath your signature. Deadline for all donations and signed Christmas cards will be Sunday, November 10th. Items needed: Juice boxes, small individual bags of peanuts, small individual bags of pretzels, rice krispie treats, fruit snacks, candies, gum, handiwipes, packages of dice and puzzle books. Any donated funds received will go towards shipping costs.

Following up Pastor Goods message in the September newsletter, we ARE the church and IT IS US! A new season begins and every woman is invited to be more involved meeting your needs for friendship and service and sharing with others the lives we live here in Fountain Hills...our city on a hill. Have you... been seeking more friends? needed an opportunity to talk about your ideas or concerns? wanted more camaraderie with others seeking ways to live fully? been seeking ways to nourish Spirit in everyday life? We women have such busy lives but slipping in some together time enhances everything else. Our PW activities are always open to all so if you havent tried attending a circle, bookclub or Out n About, come try it and find new friends. Other opportunities include three Gatherings: Fall, Winter and Spring. Our Fall Gathering is October 21 at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Center. Just bring a salad to share and come enjoy our program. Delicious food, Country Rock with Christian folk singer Karl Bielan and Donna Yordys report on the Appalachian Mission Project this summer entitled Unto These Hills. The Winter Gathering will be January 20th and the Spring, April 5th so they can go on your calendar now too with the details to be publicized later. Grab your calendar and add one new activity...we want to know you better.

Let me tell you more about these activities. The circles are small group meetings to study the Bible and socialize. Youll have an opportunity to ask questions, provide ideas and meet others.

Hooked on Books There are no requirements to read specific books. We are each readers. This is an opportunity to talk to others about what we read (if you wish to) and learn about new books not yet familiar. We bring books we have finished reading and sometimes offer them for the taking or give them to our church library which is open to all. We always have coffee and tea with light snacks. A call to serve Ruth M. Walsh wrote: I was naked, and you questioned my lack of modesty in my appearance. I was imprisoned, and you debated the legal aspects of interference. I was penniless, and you discussed taxdeductible donations from your wealth. I was sick, and you thanked the Lord for the blessings of your health. I was hungry and you a committee to study malnutrition. I was homeless, and you said Gods love was shelter under any condition. I was lonely, and you left me by myself while you and your friends prayed. You seem so holy and close to God, yet Im still sick and alone and afraid! By contrast, in the parable of the sheep and the goats, Jesus says, Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me (Matthew 25:40,NRSV). When we fail to serve our neighbors, we fail to serve Jesus. When we visit the sick, were actually visiting Jesus. And, when we love one another, were actually loving Jesus.

We begin the new church year with anticipation for the growth of our congregation and our individual spiritual growth. We have people that make these blessings possible, members who call on prospective new members, members who assist in worship, music and lead Bible study. Members cook dinner for meetings, work with youth and children, maintain our campus and maintain the beautiful wreaths in the Worship Center. We also have members who visit the ill and call to say Happy Birthday or just to say hello. We need your help! If you cant make a three year commitment to an elected position, we have other areas where you can help. Prayerfully consider what you can do and talk to an Elder, we will help you share your gift. Gifts given to the Memorial Fund are used by the church for current needs or special items. Many times these donations are in lieu of flowers at a Memorial Service. The Foundation receives cash gifts at any time or bequests through wills or trusts at the time of death of the person wishing to insure the future prosperity and continuation of the church. Any member of the Foundation board can answer questions you might have about setting up your final documents and you are always welcome to attend any Foundation Board meetings.

An Investment Today for the Life of Our Church Tomorrow
The Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church has two different methods for contributing special gifts to the Church, Memorials and the Foundation. The Memorial Fund is a means of giving money to the Church in memory or honor of others and is used in accordance with the specified wishes of the giver(s). Also, it may provide the means for individuals to give to a special activity or program. It is intended as a short term (two year) program. The Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church Foundation has been established to provide members and friends a perfect charitable way to leave your mark and final testimony of your faith and value in our Church. Your gifts will help insure the future needs and ministries of the Church for years to come. Gifts to the Foundation can be restricted or designated for a special purpose(s) at your discretion. It is a wonderful way to put your faith into action and realize your visions for the future of the Foundation Hills Presbyterian Church. The Foundation is an Arizona non-profit Corporation which qualifies for tax exempt status under the provisions of Internal Revenue Code 501(c)3. The Foundation is governed by the laws of the State of Arizona, the regulations of the Internal Revenue Service and by the Foundation Articles and By-laws. Each member of the Church is also a member of the Foundation. The purpose of the Foundation is to support and assist in the activities and needs of the Church. The Foundation may accept both monetary gifts (such as cash, publicly traded stock or bonds, insurance, etc) and non-monetary gifts (such as real estate, cars, tangible or intangible personal property and other items). The Foundation will receive gifts currently or bequeathed in a will or trust. A Foundation Endowment Fund has been established for the funds acquired by the Foundation. All nonmonetary gifts accepted by the Foundation Board will normally be sold as soon as prudently possible and the proceeds deposited into the Foundation Endowment Fund. A gift may be DESIGNATED when the donor specifies a specific purpose or function for the use of the gift. The designated gift must fall within one or more of the current seven major areas of the Church (Building/ Grounds; Christian Formation; CLAF; Evangelism/ Membership; Finance; Missions; Music/Worship). The purpose or function of a designated gift must be identified when it is donated. The designated gift shall be deposited into the Foundation Endowment Fund until it is used. When a gift is identified as NONDESIGNATED, the gift may be used for the benefit of the Church in any manner determined by the Foundation Board of Trustees. Unless donated funds are needed for immediate use, all donations will be placed in the Foundations Endowment Fund, and then invested in a low risk investment pursuant to the Articles and By-laws of the Foundation. Interest and other income earned through investment of the Foundation Endowment Fund shall be distributed to support the needs of the Church and/or to cover expenses of the Foundation. The principal of the Endowment Fund shall only be used to support a particular designated gift or to support a capital need of the Church that is not covered by the annual operating budget. The Foundation looks forward to receiving your gift, either during your lifetime or as part of the disposition of your estate. If you currently have a will or trust and have designated the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church as benefactor, the Foundation would like to welcome you as a participating member of the Fountain Hills Presbyterian Church Foundation. From Knights launching finger launchers at a castle, tossing pool noodle javelins through hoops to princesses dressing up, putting on make-up and bling; the kids were excited to get together again. A tea party and popcorn along with a movie clip was used to review the armor of God to help the kids continue to Stand Strong for God. Not everyone got in the pictures, but everyone was excited to begin the fall ministries!

Blessed Beginnings Ministry

The former class study for this group has been replaced with our new Intergenerational Service which is being held from 11:15 - 12:15. We are offering Blessed Beginnings Ministry for infants. And a Ministry for preschoolers if families choose not to keep younger ones with them or if a child needs extra attention. We will always offer more to provide a Christian ministry with children - even the babies.

Sabbath Day Bible Study

The Israelites are camped on the east bank of the Jordan River. They look across the river to Canaan, the Promised Land. Moses is leading them. They have just spent one or more generations, 40 years, traveling from exile in Egypt, for a trip that should have taken 11 days. What is this all about? Why should we been interested or concerned? Could it be that it is not the distance that stood between them and the Promised Land? Maybe it is the condition of their hearts. If you have any interest in these matters, please join us for Bible Study each Sunday for the next few weeks. We are studying Deuteronomy. It is the fifth book in the Bible, the Torah, the Pentateuch, the Hebrew Bible, and the last book in The Books of Moses. This Adult Sabbath Day Bible Study meets in the Adult Center for an hour (10:15 11:15). Note the change in schedule which was made to let people attend Bible Study and still make it to the Contemporary Worship service. Coffee and goodies are available downstairs so you can fellowship while we study. Come and join us. We welcome everyone! -John Bivens

On Wednesday evenings, after a GOURMET DINNER by Chef Arlene, we invite all adults to the Bible Study from 6:30 7:45 pm. Check out the box to the right for the exciting news for October. Come and join us for fine food and fellowship at 6:00 pm. We will be joined by the Elementary Kids and our Teens. We ask for a small donation of $5.00 for dinner. Kids and Teens eat free. The Elementary Kids (Kid Community) meet from 5-6 pm. Their ministry has worship, music, traditions, storytelling, repose and small group conversation and activity time. Wednesday Night Live for Teens meet at 6:30 pm. Teens will use a way of being together followed by facilitating a topic/lession/issue then a D-group discussion. Included will be a teen adopted community mission of choice, summer camp, variety of socials.

Welcoming Children into Worship and Mission: an intentional integration of all ages in the life of our church
Modeling and teaching our kids to worship is one of the most Debby DeBernardi important things parents have the honor to do! As parents and grandparents, we desire to teach our kids how to ride a bike, play a sport, play a musical instrument, use a computer, drive a car. But teaching them how to love, serve and worship our God are some of the most important life lessons parents and grandparents have to do, too! I love the fact that we as a church are all on a journey to intentionally partner with parents in the development of children into mature lovers and followers of Christ. Thank you congregation for showing the very attitude of Jesus toward children! He included and valued children! How awesome to have an identity forming as a church who wants to include children in the full life of the church. Intentional intergenerational worship has the opportunity to integrate all our senses and ages into a creative worship expression for the glory of God and the sake of forming a whole people of God. It also is not easy! We are still experimenting and shaping this time. Thank you for being accepting of some noise and movement whether from the Family Wiggle Area or the children engaging a worship activity at a table or a response station in the back. You must look at the God Sightings Board to see what the Spirit of God is doing in their hearts! Parents, we have resources to help you in modeling and teaching worship. And the kids will probably model and teach you, too. Enjoy the awe, wonder and simplicity of a heart open and receptive to God! Please know we love them to move to the music and then return to you to worship with you. We know children worship in full body and high definition! So, here are some helps for creative worship for both adults and children: Children in Worship Info Card: The ABCs of children worshipping with you available. Response Stations: Located on the side or towards the back of the Fellowship Center. These stations or activities are various ways to respond to the message or Spirit of God. These help both adults and children focus intentionally on God and respond to Him. This is not busy work for children, these are to guide hearts and minds into a deeper awareness of and listening to what the Spirit of God is doing and saying. Then to live it. Parents or Guardians: Please have your children) worship with you at your table and help them learn to worship with reverence, respect and joyful, full body expression! Maybe they can teach you, too! Congregation: Thank you for being accepting of some noise and movement as we journey in worshipping as family! When a child cries, remember Psalm 8:1-2 For God has ordained the cries and noise of children and babies as praise to Him! The praise silences the enemies of God. Yes, childrens praise establishes a stronghold and silences the foe and avenger! Wow! We will also value our more mature members in having children serve you, share their energy with you and be respectful to your space and pace. Worship Team and Support: We are continually praying and seeking ways to come together as a faith family to creatively worship with mixed generations. This is more than worship and education, it is spiritual formation! I love being a part of a church family who takes seriously the idea of the priesthood of all believers!

Treat 4 Treat!
October 23rd our Youth will be filling bags with treats, notes and gifts to deliver to our shut-ins. Many of our mature members have treated our children and teens in many ways. We want to Treat Them for Treating Us. No tricks! So, our elementary kids will be making cards and a small gift craft. Teens will bring in candy and include a note. These will be bagged and then personally delivered this evening. Imagine, a knock on the door and a young person holding out a gift bag of treats with a hug saying...Treat for all the ways you have treated us so well at FHPC! Its our un-Halloween social. Teens will then return to the YC for a special treat and sharing of their experience. International Peacemaking
The conflicts in the Middle East have certainly been in the news a lot recently. Secretary of State John Kerry has made headlines by working to again bring the Israeli and Palestinians to the peace negotiating table. In the face of these negotiations an announcement has been made of the approval of an additional 3000 new homes in Jewish settlements within the Occupied Palestinian Territories. What is the real situation on the ground in Israel and Palestine? We have several opportunities to increase our understanding of the complexities of matters in the Holy Land. An International Peacemaker is coming to Arizona to share her first-hand knowledge and experience with us. The Peace and Justice Network of the Presbytery of Grand Canyon is pleased to sponsor the visitor, Nora Kort, a Palestinian Christian and International Peacemaker. Arrangements for her to visit Presbyterian churches in our area were made through the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program of the PCUSA. Ms. Kort was born and raised in Jerusalem. Nora Kort will be speaking at University Presbyterian Church in Tempe on Saturday, October 19th at 10:00 a.m. Nora was one of the co-authors of the Kairos Palestine document a Moment of Truth. This document is the Christian Palestinians word to the world about what is happening in Palestine. She will be speaking about Kairos Palestine also at University Church on Saturday, October 19th at 1:00 p.m. Faith Presbyterian Church in Sun City has invited Ms. Kort to present the message at the 10:00 a.m. worship service on Sunday, October 20th. Another opportunity to hear her will be at Desert Palms Presbyterian Church in Sun City West at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 20th. Dont miss one or more of these opportunities!

Fall Teams:
Wednesday Elementary KidCommunity continues
to enter the Big God Story. This offers a large group worship and response time and a small group more intimate time. Thank you Gary DeBernardi and Cynthia Linton for operating media. We will have various guests for Storytellers along with Worship Host Debby DeBernardi. Monica and Victoria Walters will join the team beginning November. The small group time offers activities, mission projects, spiritual conversation and blessings by Sandy Heunisch and Judy Irvin. Awesome, committed people who love Jesus and kids!

Teen Ministry will have Tyson and Kristi Robinson, Charlie Eberspacher, Richard Uphoff and Debby DeBernardi. Wonderful to have the youthful energy of Charlie and the faithfulness and energy of the Robinsons! Richard will add to the depth, encouragement and enjoyment! Special guests will again be invited along with partnering with other churches. Socials, missional activities, relational discipleship and worship are all part of living Truth to learn Truth. On-call Early Childhood for infants to 5 year olds will
be made available as needed. We have a team of people forming willing to offer a Preschool ministry late fall.

Life With God curriculum for elementary children will be used to introduce children to their life with God.
Scripture will be the anchor and the age-old ways of formation, spiritual disciplines, will be used as a means to the end of knowing God. Not lessons to be taught...this is discipleship for children! They will be given the tools and opportunities to explore Scripture and take it into their own lives. Watch for how you can sign up your elementary child late fall. To be offered 10:15- 11:15 am on Sundays.

As For Others
Our beliefs are best illustrated through our actions. Just saying, I believe something is a world apart from actually living out my beliefs with my actions. While teaching His disciples, Jesus confused them when He said, Just as you gave me food when I was hungry and visited Me when I was in prison, so you have done the same for others. Knowing they had not done such things, His disciples asked, When did we do this? Jesus reply sets the example of how we are to live for others. Just as you did things for others, it is as if you have done them for Me. His message can be summarized in two simple phrases: Love God. Love your neighbor. And, He said they were Michael Belk, artist alike. In other words, you cannot do one without doing the other. So, just saying, I believe in human rights or justice for all or I am a Christian, is altogether different than actually backing those beliefs with actions. Jesus message to His disciples, and to us, is that we need to walk the talk. - Matthew 25:35-40

Library Footnotes
A recent addition to the Church Library is a set of 6 books referred to as The Mitford Years Series, Written by Jan Karon. These books were donated in memory of Barbara Wyman who started and chaired the PW Hooked On Books group for many years. The series is about Father Tim, the 60 year old bachelor, Rector of an Episcopal church located in the small town of Mitford, North Carolina. Father Tim is a part of the lives of all the townspeople lovable, enduring and eccentric characters. Each book is full of humor and drama as mysteries and miracles unfold. The Series includes: 1. At Home in MitfordFather Tim has been in Mitford for 12 years and keeps busy with a church building project, parishioners to counsel, weekly sermons to write, items mysteriously disappearing from the church in addition to having Dooly, a hostile mountain boy, thrust into his care. 2. A Light in the WindowCynthia moves in next door to Father Tim and wins his heart; but he is also being pursued by a wealthy powerful widow. Some of the church members, such as Miss Sadie and the secretary Emma, are introduced. 3. A Common LifeTim, at age 62, and Cynthia become engaged and married. There are some mixed emotions and second thoughts, but only after the wedding bells ring out are such quandaries and some hilarious mishaps resolved. 4. These High Green HillsFather Tim has adopted Dooley and becomes involved in helping Dooleys mother and a battered young girl. Cynthia continues her career as a writer and illustrator of childrens books. 5. Out to CanaanA heart warming book of interesting stories and plots twists as Father Tim decides to retire. A mayoral election threatens to divide the town. 6. A New SongFather Tim has retired and agrees to serve as interim pastor of a small church on an island off the Atlantic coast. Tim and Cynthia deal with a horrendous storm, a mysterious neighbor, and a community with its own unforgettable characters. These books reflect upon Lifes Issues in a wholesome and faithfocused manner. They are funny, inviting and joyful books of the Christian faith. - Jan Hoff

A childs prayer for protection If indeed childhood was ever carefree, its hardly so now. Some children face bullying while others deal with rough home lives. Many fret over their performance at school and in sports. News of dangers and tragedies makes parents want to shelter their kids from worldly harm. Whether real or imagined, childhood anxieties are best confronted in the same way as adult anxieties: through prayer and the assurance of Gods presence. Teach this traditional prayer to a young person in your life-and find comfort in it yourself: God in heaven, hear my prayer. Keep me in thy loving care. Be my guide in all I do. Bless all those who love me too. Amen.

Spotlight . Did you know?

after marrying Barbara, a flash fire at a pilot plant put him in a hospital for eleven weeks! Twenty years were later spent with Miles Labs in Elkhart, Indiana, primarily working with the coating process of One-A-Day vitamins, and the production of citric acid from corn flour. When they moved to Fountain Hills in 1995, they began attending several different churches in town, looking for a new church home. After worshiping at FHPC a short while, Barbara Wyman invited them to join the choir which they did and sang with the group for many years. Gary has served as the Elder responsible for Building and Grounds at our church and is now the church photographer. He has worked on many Mission projects, particularly Church World Services annual Blankets Plus program. His main hobbies have been photography and woodworking, the former now taking precedence. Barbara has held a number of offices in Presbyterian Women including Moderator, Vice-Moderator, Bible Study Coordinator, Evening Circle Co-Leader, and Historian. She has enjoyed helping to establish our Church Library Resource Center and have a part of growing it to its current size and location. She went through the same process in her Indiana church, but feels this time it turned out better. Practice and experience do help! She was recently elected to serve on our churchs Foundation Board. Locally Gary is involved with Senior Services where he delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. He also has been quite active with Noon Kiwanis Club, having been club president and Lt. Governor. (Similar offices were held with Optimists Intl in Elkhart, In) . Gary and Barbara both belong to the Fountain Hills Walking Club and were Ambassadors for the Fountain Hills Chamber of Commerce. Besides enjoying music, they like to travel, having visited over 30 countries. The most unique trip was with the People to People organization, going to England and France to Follow Eisenhowers Footsteps during the D-Day Invasion. Our group was led by Mary Jean Eisenhower, and co-led by Ikes son, retired General John Eisenhower. Among the many perks of traveling in such company was a visit with Winston Churchill III and former Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath in his home. We also received VIP treatment at various WWII museums.

Gary & Barbara Oakeson

Gary grew up on a farm with his two brothers near St. Paul, Nebraska, attending a country school and a small high school. After attending Nebraska Wesleyan Univ. for two years, he earned a B.S and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering from the Univ. of Nebraska. Barbara was born and raised in Charleston, West Virginia, and enrolled at WVU to earn a degree in Pharmacy. She worked part-time as a pharmacist in independent retail pharmacies in W.Va. and Indiana, in addition to 6 years on the staff of Wassaja Memorial Health Clinic at Fort McDowell. She enjoyed helping patients improve their health as well as being able to work part-time while raising a family. And she liked being a pioneer in an occupation that did not have many women at the time she began her training. After graduation in 1959, Gary started his professional career with Union Carbide in Charleston, WV. Within a week in Charleston, he met his future bride at a Young Adult group at Barbaras home church. Then, she returned to Morgantown, WV for her final school year. Married in 1961, they now have two sons, and four delightful grandchildren. They spend July in Idaho to have more time with their son and two grandchildren there as well as baby sitting regularly with the two younger ones in Chandler, AZ. Gary and Barbara moved to Elkhart, Indiana in 1969 where they lived for 26 years before they got tired of shoveling snow and came to Arizona. Garys ten years at Union Carbide involved the development and production of polyethylene. Ten weeks

October 2013 Hospitalized? Call the church! If you are sick, hospitalized or home recovering from illness, we want you to call the church and let us know! In a congregation like ours where people leave in droves for extended summer months, it is easy for the staff, elders and deacons to assume, when we dont see someone, that they are simply vacationing away. The truth is that some of you are sick and we are not aware of it. You can help us by simply letting one of the staff know of your situation. We have an excellent support system in place due to the diligent efforts of our deacons. Help us serve you by communicating your situation.
