Heading to the Tasting Room

Do not be intimidated for any reason. That is rule number one (and there are very few real rules after that). For the most part, going wine tasting is about the easiest thing in the world, especially here in California where wineries and tasting rooms abound. You can find wineries specializing in red wines of all types, those that are famous for their white wines and others who pour sparkling wine. It is a matter of doing a little research and planning your day. Most tasting rooms open around 10 a.m. and close between 4:30 and 6 p.m. Before you start off pack a few essentials: Water (plenty of water) and something to snack on crackers or a baguette. Many wineries have picnic areas and there are plenty of delis and bakeries that can make up a lunch for you, or make your own. Which brings us to eating and drinking, the kind that doesnt directly involve wine. Be sure to nibble during the day and make sure you make time for lunch. Two tips: drink at least twice as much water as you do wine, and remember that you dont have to drink everything poured into your glass. There is a reason tasting bars have dump buckets and a pitcher of water to wash out your glass. That said, here are some tips that have proven to be helpful and are designed to help make the sensory adventure of wine tasting all the more enjoyable. Dont be afraid to ask questions. Time and time again I have heard knowledgeable winery workers say that there is no such thing as a stupid question, and they mean that. You can drink what you want, in the order you want. If you only like reds, say so; if you dont like sweet wines, speak up. But the idea of starting with whites, then going on to reds and then sweet wines is a good guide. Zinfandel is red. I am sure you know that but it never hurts to remind everyone. If there is a particular wine you want to try and it is not on the list, ask. There might be a bottle around that was opened for a trade tasting or by the winemaker. Most tasting rooms are happy to pour a little if you show enthusiasm. If you plan to take wine home with you, either in the car or on a plane, buy a cardboard box with Styrofoam wine inserts. Fill it during the day and this keeps wine from rolling around in the trunk. Check out the smaller wineries. It is a revelation. Take notes on the wines you most enjoyed. Take advantage of tours when the winery offers them, but keep in mind that they take anywhere from 20 minutes to well over an hour, so one a day is plenty. Buy wines that you can only find at the winery. These often include smaller (375 ml) bottles of limited production Ports or dessert wines. Dont buy a wine you can get at a supermarket back home. Youll pay more, and besides, whats the point? Look for tasting rooms in towns. Many of these are cooperative tasting rooms, where in one place you might find wines from a dozen or more small-to-medium premium producers. They are scattered throughout the area and more are opening all the time. Dont give too much thought to ratings and vintages. Its like art: if you like it, its a good wine. It is as simple as that. Remember that you dont have to do the driving. It takes no more than a phone call to rent anything from a Town Car or restored classic convertible to stretch limos and a 20-passenger bus. All have drivers that will stow your wine for you and the local companies know the area. As to taking that wine home, ten people sharing one of those impossibly long limousines is fine and fun, but if you all plan to buy a couple of cases the trunk which is no bigger than a normal luxury cars is going to fill up fast and youre going to find yourself filling the interior floor with boxes and using cases of Cabernet as footrest. Tell the transportation company what you have in mind and listen to their advice. They know the territory and the people and personalities. Know your limits. If you get close to it let others taste and you can listen. It beats ending the day in a blur, and if need be calling a taxi is cheaper than the alternative. And if at a seated tasting, dont be afraid to leave a gratuity. Its more than worth the five or ten dollars to get wisdom and wine and a great time. BY CHARLES NEAVE

Do the Math
one of the most asked questions asked when it comes to wine is how much of this does it take to make that, and so on. We wont pretend that is simple, but here are some industry statistics that will give a pretty good answer to that query. as with anything agricultural, of course, they are all based on countless variables when it comes to acre yields, but this is a good starting point. The rest of the information varies little if at all.

A case of wine includes:

a dozen 750 ml bottles (or 24 half bottles) or 307.2 ounces total, which comes from 30 pounds of grapes.

A single bottle contains:

750 ml of wine which is 25.6 ounces made from about 2.4 pounds of grapes (39 oz.) and is enough for four or maybe five glasses.

An acre of vineyards land can give the grower:

Five tons of grapes (though it is also less, depending on a variety of farming and winemaking practices, and on the varietal and the vineyards location) which will give you 797 gallons of juice (or thirteen-and-ahalf barrels) which is pretty close to four thousand bottles of wine.

One standard oak barrel of wine holds:

295 bottles of wine (or 59 gallons) made from 740 pounds of grapes which works out to almost but not precisely - 24 cases of wine.

What does all that information on a wine label mean?

The U.s. Department of alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms regulates wine labels and requires that information be given in a straightforward way. Basically, you will want to look for the types of grapes grown, where the grapes are grown and when the grapes were picked. Brand name Designation for a special wine Vineyard or appellation known for its grapes might be designated Location where the grapes used were grown Grape Variety used Vintage year in which the grapes were picked Location where the wine was made and/or bottled (Not to be confused with the area the grapes are grown.) located just minutes from Highway 101 and Highway 46 East, The Pleasant valley Wine Trail includes eight estate wineries working together to showcase estate grown wines and the kind of hospitality you love to encounter. The group is small yet very diverse and as you taste through the wines you will find a wide range of wine varietals including Bordeaux, rhne, italian, spanish and, of course, Zinfandel. With vineyards located a small distance apart, you will find some similarities that the Pleasant valley terroir has to offer. The long list of accolades speaks for the quality of the wines with many gold medals, best of class and several rating 90 points or higher. Silver Horse Winery is located on the winerys estate vineyard on the east side of Paso Robles. The vineyard consists of 40 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Tempranillo. These six varieties grow exceptionally well in the warm, dry climate which is so common around the Pleasant Valley Wine Trail. Silver Horse crafts small lot wines from this estate vineyard; at times the vineyard can produce less than one ton of fruit per acre. Winemaker Steve Kroener describes his wines as being, 100% food friendly, and with the layered complexity and balanced acidity of each bottling, there is no doubt about it. The Albarino is perfect for sipping with artisanal cheese and charcuterie. The Petite Sirah has become what some might call a cult wine and Silver Horse offers a prime example of the Rhone variety. Recently, wine critics have take note of Steves winemaking and the unique vineyards of the east side of Paso Robles. The 2009 Sage, a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot, was awarded a gold medal from the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competion. In 2005, the Kroener family built a state of the art winery facility and hospitality and event center. PLEASANT VALLEY

In the picturesque northern reaches of Paso Robles Wine Country lies a passionate dream-turned-reality. Eight years ago, longtime friends and business partners, Ken Warwick and Nigel Lythgoe, shared a remarkable bottle of Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon and chased it down to discover an amazing wine community and a landscape that reminded them of their childhood home in Northern England. It wasnt long before they got excited about the prospect of owning their own vineyard and making wine. In the intervening years, a beautiful villa has sprung up on the property and the winery has produced a veritable flood of award-winning wines. The carefully-tended 168-acre vineyard boasts 11 different varietals. The location of the vineyard up in the hills of San Miguel is ideal for the fruit, says Winemaker, Matt Ortman. The soil isnt very deep so the vines have to work hard to produce the fruit. The vigor of the vine is controlled naturally by the soils and the results are exceptional grapes. With national distribution established in 42 states and several countries, along with a solid foundation of an outstanding vineyard, Ken and Nigel are building out their production facility and opening up their dream to the world. October of 2012 saw the opening of a beautifully-appointed tasting room, and 2013 will mark the winerys first vintage produced in-house under Matt Ortmans purview.

Opolo Harvest Festival

Visiting the mountain top where Opolos highest-elevation vineyard grows explains why co-owner Rick Quinn envisioned building his estate here. Pinot Noir, Sangiovese and Zinfandel excelled here, proven by the vintners who began planting those varieties 17 years ago. Still, Quinn and his partner David Nichols know it takes more than spectacular views to attract wine connoisseurs. The friendly, tasting room staff takes the intimidation away from wine tasting, making the experience enjoyable for everyone. With enticing aromas wafting in from the winerys barbeque to the laughter and frivolity of the tasting room, you know you are in for a good time. There is perhaps no more entertaining or relaxed winery experience to be had on the Central Coast. This is serious wine combined with serious fun! The wines are mostly estate grown, which sets them apart from many other Central Coast wineries. In 1999, Opolos first vintage, they made Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Zinfandel and Muscat Canelli. Theyre respected for classic reds, yet theyre equally passionate about their whites, including: Viognier, Roussanne, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay. Their exceptional blends include: Rhapsody, a Meritage; Montagna-Mare, Barbera and Sangiovese; Fusion, Cabernet Franc and Merlot; and several others. Opolos latest addition is a romantic bed and breakfast among the grapevines where guests can enjoy the idyllic dream of living in wine country. By Ronda Giangreco

OVERALL pHILOSOpHY People and award-winning wines, its a happy combination. pLAN AHEAD FOR During harvest you can cast o your shoes and stomp grapes barefoot, I Love Lucy style! WHERE IT ALL STARTED The name Opolo, from Quinns Yugoslavian heritage, is in reference to a ros-style wine made on the Dalmatian Coast. Every weekend youll nd the barbecue red-up with Ricks cevapcici, a Serbian beef and lamb dish, or their gourmet pizzas from the wood-burning pizza oven, all paired with one of their fabulous wines. THEIR UNIQUE AppROACH With the very best in fruit available to them, Opolo has chosen an interesting path to winemaking. Curiously, Opolo does not employ a winemaker as such. Its a group eort. Everyone, from owners to cellar rats have a say in the wine production. The belief at Opolo is that this approach makes for consumer-friendly wines that appeal to many people.

When discussing Cabernet Sauvignon in Paso Robles, Chateau Margene is often the first producer a local wine connoisseur recommends. Since 1997, Michael Mooney and his family have carefully crafted luxury Bordeaux blends and varietal specific Cabernet Sauvignon. As with most winemakers, Michael credits much of his outstanding vintages to his estate vineyard, which is located in Creston in the eastern portion of the Templeton Gap. The grapes are thoughtfully grown in the most sustainable practices available, and then picked carefully lot by lot in amounts of one and a half tons per acre. The wine is then aged for 32 months in 100% French oak, such patience the Mooneys have! And it pays off, these outstanding Bordeaux style wines sell out almost immediately upon release. In addition to the original Chateau Margene label, the Mooney Family label was started in 2006 with a focus on Pinot Noirs from Monterey County and Rhne blends from Paso Robles. The grapes for the Pinot Noirs are sourced from two SIP certified vineyards in the famed Santa Lucia Highlands. Enjoy Chateau Margene and Family Wines on the Westside of Paso Robles guests are welcomed to the tasting room, conveniently located on the corner of Vineyard Drive and Peachy Canyon Road and open daily. Often, one of the Mooney Family members will host your tasting and share stories of their family winemaking adventures. Their estate tasting room in Creston is also open Fridays through Sundays where Michael offers the Barrel Room By Brette Ann Womack Experience, by appointment.

Pasolivo Olive Oil is nestled among some of Paso Robles most exemplary wineries off 46 West. The tasting room is run by a very knowledge forward and friendly staff that is there to assist in not only tasting their products, but in educating on the oil-making process and the numerous health benefits associated with olive oils. Tasting is always complimentary and includes the ability to taste a variety of spices and salts with their hand-crafted olive oils, which are big, bold and exemplify all three positive attributes of fresh olive oils: fruitiness, bitterness and pungency. The olive oils are created start to finish on the premises under organic and sustainable practices that result in very little waste products. Eleven different varieties of olives, ranging from Spanish to Tuscan, are grown on the 45 acre orchard. All olives are hand-picked to prevent bruising and cold-pressed within four hours with an Italian Pieralisi Major 2 continuous press, which is available to tour upon request. The whole olive is pressed, including the pit and skin, and the byproduct after separating off the oil is a paste that is used as a natural fertilizer in the orchard. The harvest takes place once a year in November/December and visitors are welcome to spectate. The oils are then packaged in eco-friendly tins designed to maximize the protection of the oils. Your visit to Pasolivo is sure to be enchanting and educational, and do not forget to peruse the gift shop where you will find bath and body products made with Pasolivos very own olive oils, as well as artisan foods and unique household gifts.products. Like so many remarkable wineries on the Central Coast, Michael Gill Cellars is a side job for proprietors Michael and Shelley Gill a labor of love and creative outlet from their respective professions of dentist and financial advisor. They say theyre content to be part-time wine producers. This way, says Michael, were not on a treadmill where we have to keep production quotas to make ends meet. We can take our time and do our very best for the wine. The Gills planted vines in Paso Robles fifteen years ago, selling fruit to some of the areas most respected winemakers until 2008, when they decided to make their own wines. With the opening of the tasting room in 2012, theyve happily had their hands full, with Michael in the field or cellar and Shelley on counter sales. Visitors to the tasting room will find a complement of Rhne, Spanish and Italian-varietal wines, including a Syrah fabled to be the darkest in the county, a spicy, floral Viognier and a Tempranillo that Michael claims is taking people by storm. In the near future, the Gills also hope to offer small lots of varietal Counoise, Zinfandel, Primitivo and Tannat. While the Michael Gill Cellars tasting room has only been open one year, to walk inside is to step back in time. Reminiscent of a French hunting chateau, the winery is tastefully appointed with treasures from the Gills international travels most notably a collection of world-class mounts hunted by Michael himself. The tasting rooms distinctive architecture incorporates ancient oak trees, while the patio makes the most of a stunning valley view. By Jaime Lewis

Eos is one of the most popular wine tasting destinations in the Central Coast region of California. Ever since its opening in the mid-1980s, the winery has built an enthusiastic fan base and earned praise from the media for its bold reds, complex whites and luscious dessert wines. The winery takes its name from the Greek goddess of dawn. Myth has it that Eos opened the gates of heaven each morning allowing the sun to begin its daily trek across the sky. Fiercely passionate, she was cursed by Aphrodite for having an affair with Ares. Her punishment was an insatiable appetite for young men. Since its purchase in 2010 by Bill Foley, Eos has undergone a number of changes to improve wine quality, upgrade brand image and enhance visitor experience. Recent and future bottlings feature a new label design that captures the essence of the brands namesake and the authenticity of the wines. The wine club has been revamped to provide more options and access to wines that arent available elsewhere. Some of the exclusive, limited-production wines that are available to members include proprietary and single-vineyard bottlings of Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Chardonnay. The tasting room, located at the corner of Airport Road and Highway 46 East, is one of the most enjoyable stops for wine lovers in the Paso Robles region. Laid back and casual, it is the perfect place to sample new releases and library selections with friends and family. The winery offers both public and private tasting programs, plus a variety of buffet and seated dining options that are available with reservations. For weddings, meetings and other private events there are two indoor spaces, a vineyard lawn and a covered pole barn. its no wonder the people here call it slo. No one is in any hurry in the cafs or on the sidewalks, and certainly no one is in any rush to leave. The vibe is relaxed but not sleepy in the two-college town of 44,000, which has four surf shops but also a resident symphony. strangers are genuinely friendly, always ready to talk about their favorite hiking trail or barbecue joint, or to point the way to the winery with the best Pinot Noir. its all part of the slo life, that combination of good stuff that makes visiting here so nourishing to the soul. Theres plenty to go around, so come: Experience the slo life! san luis obispos unusual natural beauty, along with its gentle climate, first attracted the spanish padres to the area in the 1700s. in 1772 they built the fifth of Californias 21 missions here, on the banks of san luis Creek, and named it mission san luis obispo de Tolosa. Today, many consider this the most beautiful of the spanish missions. slos once-dusty streets are now tree-lined and flanked by meticulously restored victorian painted ladies. old West buildings have been converted to bustling shops and restaurants, and art Deco civic architecture stands downtown. a university and a college have brought cultural excitement in the form of numerous musical and performing arts groups; major touring shows regularly stop in slo. a childrens museum, an art center and a history museum add to slos cultural appeal, as do its many art galleries. at the Thursday Night Farmers market, held year-round, growers bring the freshest produce and flowers to town and a multi-block party ensues, complete with street food, crafts vendors and live entertainment. Festivals and special events of all kinds take place on the plaza in front of the mission year-round. Forty-five minute north, the art-andarchitecture extravaganza known as Hearst Castle awaits. south of town, a booming wine country has emerged. some two dozen wineries produce critically acclaimed vintages in the Edna valley and arroyo Grande valley. visitors can head out along the gorgeous country roads to sip their way through the vineyards, then return to town to savor everything from santa maria barbeque to italian fritti. Baileyana Winery, located in the beautiful Edna Valley, was founded over 25 years ago by Catharine Niven. Catharines husband, Jack, introduced her to the wine industry in the early 1970s and the two pioneered wine grape planting in the area, founding Paragon Vineyards. Today, the business is operated by second and third generation Niven family members and has grown to include the Firepeak Vineyard and five additional sister wineries. Wines from all six labels are poured at Baileyanas tasting room located in the historic Independence Schoolhouse, built in 1909. The current building includes some of the original windows, siding and floorboards, preserving history while adding to a uniquely attractive setting for the tasting room and extensive gift shop. Surrounding the tasting room are expansive picnic areas with stunning views of the SIP certified Estate Firepeak and Paragon Vineyards. The most recent addition to the Baileyana family is the sister winery True Myth. The label embraces the myth of Mother Nature, a symbol for the earths ability to provide us with its bounty, and its proven truth through centuries of planting and cultivating vineyards. The historic Chamisal property, the first vineyard planted in the Edna Valley, has been producing wines of distinctive character bold, complex and intriguing since 1973. With the proximity to the ocean and cool climate, it is the ideal area for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The winemaking philosophy reflects simplicity and purity allowing the natural characteristics of this remarkable estate to shine through. The vineyard is home to five different varieties planted on 85 acres: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Grenache and Pinot Gris. To add complexity to the finished wines, each variety was planted with multiple clones which were carefully chosen for the vineyards specific climate and soil type. The result offers winemaker Fintan du Fresne, 24 completely different parcels to blend into his bold, delicious and perfectly balanced wines. The Pinot Noir, for example, has 10 various clones which Fintan uses to layer flavor into all five of his Estate grown Pinot Noirs. The Chamisal tasting room is in an updated, modern barn that opens up onto the beautiful back patio set in the Estate Vineyard. The nice quiet garden patio overlooks the La Panza mountain range. Director of Consumer Sales, Andrea de Palo sets the tone by bringing a warm and inviting feel, making guests feel like family. Andrea does a professional job of helping all visitors understand and appreciate the nuance of the various Chamisal wines. She and her staff are happy to cater to visitors of all types. With a wide range of varieties and styles, its not hard to find a Chamisal wine to fall in love with. The tasting room prides itself on welcoming repeat visitors back again and again.

VARIETALS Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Grenache, Syrah, Pinot Gris STYLE Chamisal oers an upscale and elevated experience while embracing the rustic beauty of the property and the Valley. Talley Vineyards may be celebrating 27 years in business, but they are still younger than Talley Farms, started in the 1940s. Though the farm is an integral part of the family-run business, producing specialty and organic vegetables, its the wine that has taken centerstage. Today, Talley has six estate vineyards in the Arroyo Grande and Edna Valleys. Their Mediterranean-styled tasting room rests in the middle of their historic Rincon Vineyard in Arroyo Grande, where cropland surrounds the vines. The comfortable tasting room has floor to ceiling windows, a horseshoe tasting bar and vaulted ceilings. The expansive property also features three diverse picnic areas offering beautiful views of the serene landscape. Talley has always strived for a personal approach to the wine tasting experience, therefore they offer a variety of special tours and tastings. These tours are fun and informative and can be customized to the size and interests of any group. Guests are educated about what happens in all aspects of the winemaking process and can focus on the winery, vineyards and barrel room. For example, during May visitors can learn about shoot thinning and Spring pruning or have a Chardonnay Experience and learn about Chardonnay while tasting a flight of vineyard designated wines. In September, learn about harvest techniques and fermentation or taste through new releases of their Pinot Noirs. Talley is open daily for tasting of their Talley Vineyards and Bishops Peak wines. Visit Talley Vineyards today and experience all the unique and special offerings of almost three decades in the Arroyo Grande Valley.

VARIETALS Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Riesling BUZZ Great scores from The Wine Advocates Robert Parker who wrote, The one superstar for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Edna Valley is Talley Vineyards. OUTDOORS Their historic, scenic grounds feature three unique picnic areas in a serene rural setting. NOTE The tasting room oers several varietals available on tap, sold by the glass and in gallon growlers. FUN FACT They sponsor an annual 5K run through their vineyards, which raises funds for student athletes at Arroyo Grande High School.

Pianetta Winery was established in 1995 when John Pianetta embarked on planting a 68-acre vineyard in Southern Monterey County, near San Miguel. Prior to farming the vineyard, John served as a Fighter Pilot in the Navy followed by a 25-year career as a commercial pilot for American Airlines. John is a 4th generation farmer and the tradition continues with his daughter Caitlin working alongside him in all aspects of the winery business. The vineyard consists of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The Syrah is split into two clones, one French (Noir) and one Australian (Shiraz 01). These two clones give John and Caitlin two distinctly different flavors to work with. Pianettas first vintage released was 2002 with only 370 of Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Pianetta Winery produces about 3000 cases of wine. The current portfolio boasts a number of wines with 90+ point ratings and a number of gold medals from tastings and Wine Competitions around the country, including the San Francisco Chronicle and the LA International Wine Competition. In 2006, the Pianettas opened their first tasting room. Pianetta Winerys tasting room is located in the quaint downtown area of Paso Robles. While strolling through the park and perusing the shops, stopping in for a sample of Pianettas wine is always a treat. Guests are welcomed into the warm and inviting tasting room, which offers a flight of five or more Pianetta wines for only $6 (the fee is refunded upon purchase). The tasting room is also host to First Saturdays: Wine & the Arts an event which features an original artists reception each first Saturday of the month, from 5 to 7 p.m. During festival weekends, guests can participate in blind tastings, food pairings, live music and barrel samples. For upcoming event information, check the website. By Brette Ann Womack

DOWNTOWN PASO ROBLES

Il Cortile Ristorante, just west of City Park at 608 12th Street, offers a vibe of laid back sophistication that is fast becoming preferred in Paso Robles dining. Theres a sense of local satisfaction that, yes, Paso holds its own with the big-city establishments, minus any big-city attitude. The vision and partnership of husband and wife, Executive Chef Santos MacDonal and Carole MacDonal, has been a recipe for success at Il Cortile. Carole, who oversees the front of the house, is a veteran producer of hit television shows, including The Amazing Race, with experience in commercials, film and all aspects of production. Honduran-born Chef Santos is well-versed in fine dining and menu creation. The Giorgio (Malibu) and Bridge Restaurant (L.A.) alumnus faithfully represents rustic Italian fine dining with attention toward integrating components that naturally complement one another. Handmade pasta and sauces are mainstays, with menu offerings in antipasti, primi and secondi courses. In addition to ingredients imported from Italy, Chef Santos uses produce, meats and grains from numerous local growers with whom he has cultivated strong relationships. This agricultural palette supplies Chef MacDonal with the seasons best and provides guests something new to try with beloved specialties, like osso bucco and risotto. Summer primi offerings include homemade Pappardelle with Wild Boar, and Spaghetti with Black Tiger Prawns in a light tomato sauce with spicy lobster oil. Together, Carole and Chef Santos have merged their passion for food and wine to make devoted clientele of locals and visitors alike, all within a leisurely stroll of Downtown Paso Robles. When businessman and financier Bill Foley moved his family to Santa Barbara in 1994, he saw the realization of his life-long dream: to become a vintner of premier Burgundian-style wines. Foley founded Lincourt in 1996 and named it for his two daughters, Lindsay and Courtney. Under the watchful eye of renowned winemaker Leslie Mead Renaud, the 50-acres of estate Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are farmed vine by vine, with Renaud taking the best blocks (or rows) of grapes to create each wine. Renaud also uses some of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes from Foley Vineyards to create wines that are both approachable and affordable. Both Lincourt and Foley Vineyards practice sustainable farming techniques in order to ensure the highest quality of wine from grape to glass. Drawing from years of experience working for wineries throughout California, Renaud shares Foleys commitment to quality winemaking. Each wine is aged in French Oak barrels with the focus on creating wines that exemplify the unique terroir and varietal-rich flavors. As you arrive at Lincourt, the iconic windmill that graces each of their wine labels will greet you as you enter the old farmhouse. The relaxing atmosphere and beautiful property offers something for the whole family wine tasting, picnicking or enjoying a bottle as you bask in the beauty of By Carolyn Turner the Santa Ynez Valley.

VARIETALS Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot ACCLAIM The Lincourt Pinot Noir from the Rancho Santa Rosa Vineyard is an example of the unique terroir of Santa Barbara County, and Foleys love of Pinot Noir. FUN FACT The yellow Craftsman-style house (currently the tasting room) was originally ordered out of the Sears and Roebuck catalogue in 1926. At that time, the railroad ran along Alamo Pintado Road, the home was delivered in pieces then carried up the hill and assembled. Now, nearly 100 years later, the home remains in much of the same condition! DONT MISS Lincourt is the perfect place to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the serenity of the Santa Ynez Valley out on the veranda. I suggest grabbing a sandwich at nearby Paninos or Los Olivos Grocery to pair with your tasting.

LOS OLIVOS
Andrew Murray fell in love with the emerging Rhne varietals, Syrah and Viognier, in the late 1980s while traveling through Frances Rhne Valley. Leaving his UC Berkeley paleontology studies behind, he pursued his new mistress, Syrah, with an internship in Australia. His three-month tryst evolved into a 15-month romance with the famed Australian Shiraz. Returning to the states, he earned a bachelors degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis renowned wine program, then founded his eponymous Santa Ynez winery and vineyard. He sought out growers who shared his passion for excellence and who dared to farm their vines to perilously low yields with the most advanced viticultural methods in the industry. This uncompromising winemakers lucid philosophy is summarized succinctly in three words: Passion Wisdom Courage; the Passion of an unflagging love affair with Rhne varietals; the Wisdom gained with 20 years of winemaking; and the Courage to seek even the most subtle nuance out of each vintage. Andrews focus and dedication to his craft have culminated in what Robert Parker, Jr. calls, one of the shining stars in the Santa Barbara firmament. This youthful perfectionist has been named Tastemaker of the Year by Food and Wine Magazine, as well as, One of the most fearsome talents in food and wine. Still, despite myriad accolades, Andrew remains the same modest, approachable, contemplative man he was when he first embarked to Australia back in 1992. Its well worth the visit to Andrew Murray Vineyards sleek tasting room in the center of Los Olivos, or the trek to Area 51 to visit the winery on the Foxen Canyon Wine Trail. You will surely delight in sampling the fruits of Andrews passionate labors and will often catch him at his work in the winery.

BUZZ Andrew Murray Vineyards Syrah Terra Bella Vineyard just received 93 Points from Wine Spectator, beating out many wines at much higher prices. Also, The Wine Advocate recently gushed, This set of wines from Andrew Murray is remarkable for its breadth of quality and sheer value. FUN FACT Aside from wine, Andrew is a cycling and photography a cionado. Often at the winery on weekends, hes as apt to talk carbon ber frames and apertures, as de-stemming and screw caps. DONT MISS Andrew launched a new label, This is E11even Wines. The name is a nod to the rockumentary Spinal Tap and Murray plans to turn it up to 11 by breaking away from Rhne varietals, and blending to achieve just the right melody and bust out a solo. He will be releasing the 2011 Pinot Noir (an estate grown Pinot from Santa Maria) in February of 2013. Limited production of under 250 cases and a price of under $20 will guarantee that this wine will sell out quickly!

Though the Alta Maria Vineyards tasting room only recently opened, they have been making wine for more than a decade. Co-owners Paul Wilkins and James Ontiveros chose to set up shop in Los Olivos, which is fast developing a reputation as a destination in the heart of the acclaimed Santa Barbara County Wine Country. Decorated with what the duo calls a Central Coast Heritage theme, the tasting room is clearly influenced by the old stagecoach and Pacific Coast Railroad days of Los Olivos. It is at once Western yet with a nod to the contemporary; historic but classy. And the tasting room is a stones throw from Matteis Tavern, the still standing historic railroad stop. Like that of our home town, the Santa Maria Valley, Los Olivos and the Santa Ynez Valley are deep with history that few people realize, says Paul Wilkins. It is rich with potential and its past and the people that surround it bolster its odds of becoming something very special. We want to be here with our wines to help tell the stories of our past and this communitys heritage and to also to be a part of Los Olivos future, he adds. And thats a fitting comment since co-owner James Ontiveros has family roots going back to 1781. Paul and James were college buddies who both share a love of farming and a love of wine. James works as viculturalist and Paul as the winemaker, but they are both equally excited to share their personal and professional histories through their wines. By Michael Cervin

VARIETALS Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon OUTDOORS A small casual patio, which fronts Grand Avenue, the main drag in Los Olivos, allows you sit and watch the world go by. You can purchase wine by the glass, too. FUN FACT The tasting room walls have 1860 and 1861 maps which show the recording of 411 privately held Spanish and Mexican land grants including Rancho Tepusquet, which was originally owned by the Ontiveros family starting in 1837. NOTE The label artwork for Alta Maria Vineyards features images of hand-hewn iron nails used by homesteaders before the Industrial Revolution introduced mass produced machine cut nails.

LOS OLIVOS
Over the last 30 years, Qup owner Bob Lindquist has achieved a sort of legendary status in the wine world. Lindquist has been involved in the Santa Barbara County wine industry since its beginnings as a modern wine region in the mid 1970s and was an early advocate of growing Rhne grapes in the region, focusing specifically on Syrah. In 1982, Lindquist started Qup winery and today, he continues to help increase recognition of the region world-wide through production of his Rhne-style wines. The name Qup comes from the local Chumash Indian word for poppy, as it seemed only fitting to pay homage to the original cultivators of the land. Lindquist wanted to convey his dedication to growing and producing local wines, and so chose the iconic California poppy to represent his brand. Each Qup label is graced by yet another poppy. One of which was originally a quilt design by the craftsman-era artist Gustav Stickley. The focus of the Qup wines has always been on producing wines that exhibit the unique flavors of both the terroir and the grape varieties, which is why he chose to source from the world-renowned Bien Nacido Vineyard. In 2002, Lindquist and his wife Louisa purchased an 80-acre property in Edna Valley near San Luis Obispo, and are growing both French and Spanish-style grapes biodynamically. A visit to the Qup tasting room in Los Olivos will quickly reveal that winemaking runs in the Lindquist family. Visitors will often taste the Verdad and Ethan wines, made by Bobs wife and son, respectively. Youre sure to feel like one of the By Carolyn Turner family, too, before you leave!

VARIETALS: Chardonnay, Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah ACCLAIM: Qup is known for accomplishing quite a few rsts in Santa Barbara County, including the rst producer of Syrah in 1982, Viognier in 1989, as well as the rst Rhnestyle blend called Los Olivos Cuve in 1988. Qup also lays claim to producing the rst Marsanne in California in 1987. Qup was also named one of the top 100 wineries in America for eight of the last nine years. FUN FACT: When visiting Qup, you will also have the opportunity to taste Verdad and Ethan wines. Verdad is owned by Bobs wife Louisa Sawyer Lindquist, and her focus is on creating Spanish-style wines, while Ethan Wines are made by Bobs son Ethan Lindquist, who focuses on creating Sangiovese and Rhne-style wines. DONT MISS: The Qup winery is located on the famed Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Maria and is not open to the public except for the day after the Vintners Festival in the spring and the day after the Harvest Festival in the fall.

Diversity is truly the spice of life and with nearly three dozen tasting rooms in Los Olivos, how does a winery stand out? For Cimarone thats easy. You see, Cimarones tasting room is the first tasting room representing the newly formed Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara AVA in all of Los Olivos. But what exactly does that mean? Well, it means that Happy Canyon is becoming known for Bordeaux grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc, and this federally recognized growing area is unique in all of Santa Barbara since these grapes are less common here. After walking countless properties, we were finally introduced to what would become our Three Creek Vineyard, says owner Roger Higgins. This site possessed all the elements of an ideal vineyard locale: rocky, well-drained soils, steep hillsides and south-facing slopes, all within the Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara AVA. Here we could plant and grow a superb vineyard utilizing low-yields and sustainable vineyard care. Their goal is to always produce handcrafted, high-quality wines under two distinct labels Cimarone and 3CV, whose wines hover in the $20 range, both with an emphasis on Bordeaux and Rhne varietals. Of course to make great wine you need a great winemaker and the Higgins tapped winemaker Andrew Murray who, as Roger says, embodies our goal of making thoughtfully constructed serious wines. Currently they are making about 3,000 cases and its not uncommon to find Roger and his wife Priscilla behind the counter in their tasting room pouring wine and chatting about their project. They are truly hands-on in every aspect of the winery and that translates to unique wines from a unique region By Michael Cervin making for a unique wine tasting experience.

VARIETIES Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot FUN FACTS Whats in a name?Well, Cimarones is quite simple: its the rst two letters of their sons names, and Roger and Priscillas names Cilla, Mark, Roger and Neal. Priscilla has a PhD in physics from Cambridge University, was born in Zambia and raised in Kenya. Roger is from Yorkshire, England with a degree in aeronautical engineering. If you happen to see a black and white dog, his name is Mac, the winery dog.

Over the past fifteen years, Bill Foley has worked hard to make his name synonymous with unique and quality wines from Santa Barbara County. After the successful creation of Lincourt Winery in 1996, Foley went on to found Foley Wines in 2002, adding both Rancho Las Hermanas and Rancho Santa Rosa vineyards to his growing portfolio of high quality vineyards. Located in the heart of the famed Santa Rita Hills AVA, the temperate coastal climate, south-facing hills and limestone soils amount to the holy grail of elements for producing world-class Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. Foley knew he needed a winemaker who could exemplify this fruit and create wines in their likeness, and so Leslie Mead Renaud joined the team. As Chairperson for World of Pinot, Renaud is completely in her element as she farms both vineyards cluster by cluster, picking the best bunches of fruit to create each Foley wine. Foley focuses on creating wines that embody the uniqueness of the Santa Rita Hills, and hes also taken great care in creating a tasting room and event center that allows guests to enjoy being surrounded by the spectacular mountain ranges, coastal oaks and contoured hillside vines. In less than twenty years, Foley has watched his love of wine become a dream that hes been able to share with visitors from around the world. Wine Enthusiast magazines Man of the Year in 2010 is an honor that only further fuels Foleys commitment to creating quality wines worth sharing. By Carolyn Turner

When Jennifer Arant first moved to Paso Robles in 1992, she started Lions Peak with the goal of producing exceptionally fine Bordeaux, Rhne and specialty wines in small, handcrafted lots. Located in the heart of Paso Robles, the 120-acres of Lions Peak Estate Vineyard is one of the oldest vineyards in the area, with 40-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vines. In addition to using their highly lauded estate fruit, Arant also sources from several esteemed vineyards throughout the Central Coast. Drawing experience from her travels to many of the great wine regions around the world, Arant was also mentored by Robert Lawrence Balzer (35-year food and wine critic for the L.A. Times), and attended UC Davis and Cal Poly; the result is a portfolio of wines with unusual depth, range and character. Originally a professional interior designer, Arant translated her passion for the arts into the artistic label design, where every wine is personified with its own graphics and unique story. The mantra of Lions Peak is the synergy between the vineyards and Mother Nature, along with the coupling of fine wine and artistic packaging. Yet the true story is the one that is told by all who come to drink and share these unique wines with their friends and family. Each bottle shared, exemplifies the story of how, from grape to glass, wine is truly a work of art. By Carolyn Turner

Following the picturesque winding roads of Tepesquet and Foxen Canyon will lead you to world-class wineries by way of sprawling vineyards and rolling hills. in the more northern region of the appellation, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign due to the maritime climate. This ensures a long temperate growing season which the Burgundian varietals crave. in the southern region of the appellation, the trail moves a bit east resulting in hotter days and cooler nights. Bordeaux and Kenneth rhne varieties flourish in this more extreme climate. FOXEN CANYON TO SANTA BARBARA

Founded in 1962, Santa Barbara Winery is Santa Barbara's first commercial winery since the prohibition era. In fact, Santa Barbara Winery opened its doors ten years before any other winery in Santa Barbara County. Today, our winery and tasting room are at the heart of Santa Barbara's Urban Wine Trail, just blocks from the beautiful Pacific Ocean. While we are best know for our Santa Barbara County Chardonnay, which can be found nationwide and abroad, we specialize in a multitude of varietal wines made from French and Italian grapes of both fame and obscurity. Santa Barbara is home to four separate American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), each with it's own distinct climates and soil types, which allow local grape growers to grow a variety of different grapes throughout the county. We offer award-winning wines made from such familiar grapes as Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as less commonly encountered botrytized dessert wines, the very rare deep, dark Lagrein, and more. All of the grapes we use are sourced from our vineyards and neighboring vineyards in Santa Barbara County. Our tasting room is located in the winery itself. You can enjoy a flight of the current vintage while watching the next vintage being made. We also offer wines by the glass and private, candlelit VIP tastings* in our barrel-aging room, accompanied by a gourmet cheese platter and the undivided attention of your own personal sommelier. *requires 24 hour advanced reservations. Submitted

VARIETALS Orange Muscat, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Primitivo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Petit Verdot, Grenache and Lagrein FUN FACT Winemaker Bruce McGuire has been with Santa Barbara Winery for over 30 years. He is known in local wine circles as the "Yoda" of Santa Barbara Wine Country for his vast knowledge, inscrutable demeanor and often cryptic phraseology. FUN FACT Primitivo is the Italian name for Zinfandel, a grape whose origins have been traced to Croatia. Wines made from vines brought to the US from Italy may be labeled as either Primitivo or Zinfandel.

Bigger is not always better in the wine industry. A case in point is Fontes & Phillips who make less than 1,500 cases of wine, amounting to about 300 to 400 cases each of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Ros. Owner and winemaker Alan Phillips works together with his wife, Rochelle Fontes-Phillips, to create a portfolio of small-lot wines from world-class Santa Barbara County vineyards including a single vineyard designate Pinot Noir from the Santa Rita Hills. But prior to calling Santa Barbara home, Alan, who worked at wineries in the Napa Valley, eventually moved into winemaking consulting which led him to New Zealand, Germany, France, Spain and Portugal, giving him the opportunity to make wine and view the wine business from a global perspective. Together Rochelle and Alan have been involved in the wine industry for 35 cumulative years and in 1998, they moved to Santa Ynez to help Bill Foley launch Foley Estates and LinCourt Vineyards. While establishing Foley, Alan was working quietly on his own label, preferring smaller scale production where he could focus his energies on his wines. His personal favorite is actually Panky, a classic Ros made from equal parts of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah from Santa Ynez. And lucky for us, Panky is a terrific wine and it actually opens the door for wine lovers to better understand Ros. This dusty rose-colored wine is whole cluster pressed which helps to preserve the natural vibrancy of the grapes. It is then stainless steel fermented without a secondary malolactic fermentation and then bottled in December following the harvest. Small lots, big flavors which shows that at Fontes & Phillips, smaller is better. By Michael Cervin

VARIETIES Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Ros (my personal favorite) FUN FACTS Truly a labor of love, even the bottling and packaging of their wines is done by hand as each bottle is personally labeled by Alan and Rochelle with pewter hand-made labels from South America. Rochelle had a successful career in wine compliance and accounting when she met Alan. Their Panky wine was so named because Panky means anything thats really cool. While working in Napa, Alan worked with winemaking Pinot Noir legend Andr Tchelistcheff!

Firestone is considered by many to be the Grande Dame of the Santa Ynez Valley. Founded in 1972, it was the first major estate winery established in this pastoral Central Coast AVA. Over the past 40 years it has evolved into one of the regions most popular and successful producers thanks to a portfolio of wines that offer serious quality at reasonable prices. The Firestone estate is situated near the charming little town of Los Olivos, two hours north of Los Angeles and five hours south of San Francisco. Los Olivos is known for its old west feel, fine restaurants and homey lodgings. The local vibe is placid, casual and peaceful. The surrounding countryside is typical of rural California with rolling hills that morph seasonally from summer gold to winter green. The estate is in a unique cusp region of the valley that offers moderate temperatures and an extremely long growing season enabling Firestone to successfully grow a staggering range of grape varieties. Red wines have their origins in Bordeaux and the Rhone Valley. They include: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. White wines feature grapes from Burgundy, the Loire Valley and Germany and include: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Gewrztraminer. Firestone boasts one of the most popular tasting rooms in Santa Barbara County. The lovely visitors center has an expansive island bar backed by large picture windows that look out on the vines. For private events, Firestone has a handful of indoor and outdoor areas suitable for weddings, receptions, corporate gatherings, birthdays or anniversaries. Since 1973 Zaca Mesa Winery has been dedicated to producing wines that truly capture the unique spirit of their land. Their very name comes from the Chumash word, Zaca, meaning restful and peaceful place, a sentiment that permeates every aspect of the 750-acre estate. Located in the northern-most region of the Santa Ynez Valley AVA, Zaca Mesa Winery planted close to one third of their land to Rhne varieties along the mesas scattered throughout the property. This combination of prolonged sun exposure, rich and well-drained soils and mostly organic farming practices leads to the creation of 100% estate grown and bottled wines that are unparalleled. As their website states: We have embraced the code [of Sustainable Winegrowing] in our winegrowing to ensure the health and sustainability of our vineyards, our employees, our neighbors and our environment. Visitors have the opportunity to taste these distinctive wines in a rustic yet chic tasting room that was built in the 1970s, located in the original winery. For visitors interested in tasting these wines amidst the peaceful spirit of the land, Zaca Mesa Winery offers additional picnic areas near the tasting room, as well as on a hill overlooking the vineyards. From time to time winemaker, Eric Mohseni, offers hikes through the vineyards, and on the weekends visitors are often treated to food trucks. For a complete list of upcoming events, be sure to check the events section of the website. By Carolyn Turner

VARIETALS Chardonnay, Roussane, Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache ACCLAIM Zaca Mesa was the rst Central Coast winery to appear in Wine Spectator Magazines Top 10 list in 1995. Within the following year, the Estate Syrah was served by then-President Clinton to French President Jaque Chirac at a White House State dinner. FUN FACT Since its inception in 1973, many of the winemakers and wine professionals who have worked at Zaca Mesa Winery have given it name Zaca Mesa University, as its been the training ground for many of the Santa Barbara County wine industry pioneers including: Ken Brown (Wild Horse, Byron, Ken Brown Wines), Adam Tolmach (Ojai Vineyard), Jim Clendenen (Au Bon Climat) and Bob Lindquist (Qup). When conjuring up a vision of malibu, an image of starlets dodging paparazzi and suntanned surfers is certain to come to mind. The first documented vineyard in the area was planted on the rancho Topanga malibu sequit by Jose Bartolome Tapia, who left it to his wife, maria, in 1824. matthew Keller, who purchased the land in 1857, planted hundreds of acres of grape vines in solstice Canyon and named it the rising sun vineyard and the first modern day vineyard, The malibu vineyard, was planted in 1985 by michael and Kim mcCarty. since then, intrepid vintners have begun to take advantage of the marvelous growing conditions that the area offers and are now producing world class wines. From the luscious Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards overlooking the Pacific ocean, to the bold and elegant Cabernets and merlots of the canyons, the malibu Coast is truly oenophiles paradise. MALIBU COAST

A Hidden Treasure of Great Food and Timeless History Cornell, an unincorporated community nestled between Malibu and Agoura Hills, is rich in history dating back to the late 1800s when New York aristocrats settled in Los Angeles and were drawn to the rugged terrain and wildlife of the Santa Monica Mountains. In the early 1920s Malibou Lake was created, but when it took many years to fill the hunters moved on and Hollywood stepped in making Malibou Lake and the surrounding terrain a popular filming venue for such productions as M*A*S*H*, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Frankenstein, The Great Dictator and The Getaway. When Tom Runyon moved to Hollywood he too became fascinated with the then revived Santa Monica Mountains where he could hunt, trap and fish, but soon hunting restrictions left Tom searching for alternative activities and thus was born The Old Place. Tom and his wife, Barbara, established the restaurant in what was once Hanks Country Store, that also served as the community post office before closing in the early 60s. The couple solely operated for over 40 years on a miners menu consisting of just three items: steak, clams and potatoes. The Old Place became home to colorful locals as well as the likes of Steve McQueen, Jason Robards, Burgess Meredith and Sam Peckinpah. In 2009, Tom passed away. His son, Morgan took over operations with his friend, Tim Skogstrom, the owner of the neighboring Cornell Winery & Tasting Room. The Old Place closed for four months then reopened with a slightly modernized menu catering to the growing community. The environment and decor remain rustic and you will enjoy very large portions of very good food accompanied by a heaping plateful of timeless history. A Love of Great Wine and Great Beer the wine list consists of various wines from some of the most prestigious producers in California. If you prefer to drink something local visit the Cornell Winery & Tasting Room located next door. Half off corkage fee will be applied to any wine bought from the Cornell Winery. Draft beers include Craftsman 1903 pre-prohibition Lager, Anchor Porter, Figueroa Mtn. IPA and Enegren Alt. A variety of specialty bottled beer is By Bethany Rhine also available.

CApACITY Seating at the antique bar, which serves as a large dining table, is on a rst come basis. Five booths and three tables are available to reserve for parties of four or more. The total seated capacity is 69. THE MAILROOM A private dining room that seats 9-12 people. It is home to the original sorting table from the Cornell post oce and served as a poker room for Tom and his friends.

MALIBU COAST

In many cases, the best wines are produced from the grapes grown in small, intimate vineyards. Rambla Pacifico Pinot Noir, from The Malibu Vineyard, is just such a wine. Made from fruit grown on a two-acre vineyard in the hills of Malibu, this wine is available at a variety of restaurants and stores in the Malibu and surrounding area. The Malibu Vineyard, which is owned by restaurateur Michael McCarty, once produced a variety of wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, a Cabernet Franc blend, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay, but after the Malibu fires of 1993, this all changed. McCartys house was destroyed by fire, and part of the vineyard was scorched. Eventually, McCarty decided to replant his entire vineyard, and focus on producing Pinot Noir. He said the microclimate was perfect for the production of this type of wine. The current Rambla Pacifico series was born. Rambla Pacifico is described as fruit-forward, with strong nuances of berries and black cherry, and hints of leather, tobacco, and sandalwood. The wine goes great with lamb, steak, duck and turkey. Both of Michael McCartys restaurants, Michael's Santa Monica and Michaels New York, carry the most recent Rambla Pacifico release. The Malibu Vineyard wines can also be purchased at other locations, including several restaurants in Malibu, such as Nobu, and in local stores. Visit The Malibu Vineyard or Michaels Santa Monica websites to find out more information about Rambla Pacifico Pinot Noir. If you would like to purchase the wines directly, call Michael's Santa Monica at (310) 451-0843. By Cathy Neushul

MALIBU COAST
Dolin Malibu Estate Vineyards was established in 2006 when Elliott and Lynn Dolin planted 900 Chardonnay vines on their south facing Malibu slope, overlooking the vista of the Pacific Ocean. From the outset, their goal was to produce the best fruit that Mother Nature would allow and, in turn, spare no measure to transform their fruit into the best wine possible. The coastal climate of Malibu, combined with the vineyards slope, orientation and soil composition, served to yield fruit that exceeded all expectations. The 2009 maiden vintage of Dolin Malibu Estate Chardonnay garnered a Silver Medal in its very first competitive wine event the 2011 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition in which fellow class members included the names Cakebread, Rombauer, Frank Family and Sonoma-Cutrer. Spurred on by this success and their desire to produce a world-class wine, they engaged accomplished Central Coast winemaker Kirby Anderson (head winemaker for many years at Gainey Vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills). Production was moved from Camarillo, to the Central Coast where Kirby could closely manage the winemaking process. The resulting 2010 Dolin Malibu Estate Vineyards Chardonnay went on to win a coveted Double Gold Medal at the 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and was awarded a 94 point score by The Tasting Panel magazine. In response to numerous requests by fans of Dolin Estate wines, the decision was made to expand the portfolio and offer several red varietals for consumers to choose from. Thus, for the 2012 vintage, Dolin Malibu Estate Vineyards has produced four unique single-vineyard Pinot Noir offerings, a Ros of Pinot Noir and a proprietary red wine composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grapes from the Malibu-Newton Canyon AVA. Total production for 2012 will approximate 2,000 cases, a far cry from 105 cases produced from the 2009 bottling!

MALIBU COAST

Carol and Stephen Hoyt have had a long-standing love for wine. Early in their marriage they visited a working vineyard in Napa and developed a desire to be vintners. A photograph taken of grapes in their kitchen reminded them daily of their dream to have a vineyard of their own. They thought it would be Napa, but the dream was realized when in 2001, they found a stunning piece of property in Malibu with a close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, they knew they could plant there. With its cool mornings, hot days and followed by cool nights it became a perfect environment for growing the award winning Chardonnay you find today. They had been sourcing grapes from Paso Robles and Santa Ynez for their other wines. So it was natural that when the opportunity to purchase additional property in the heart of the west side of Paso Robles became available, they jumped at it. There they now have 141 acres, 30 acres planted with such varietals as Tempranillo, Cabernet, Viogner, Grenache, Syrah, Zinfandel, Muscat and Petit Verdot. Carol started her winemaking experience in her kitchen with 100 pounds of Cabernet which yielded two cases of a delightful wine they called Carols Cab. Today, they utilize the custom crush facility of Terravant Wine Company in Buellton. Carol and Stephen plan to build a small, boutique winery and tasting room on their Paso Robles property. They currently produce 1200 cases annually and hope to triple that. But now they enjoy being exclusively small and were even selected Microwinery of the year 2012 by the California State Fair, and their 09 Cabernet received 98 points and a double gold. You will find gold medals hanging from most of their wines. Hoyt Family Vineyards does not have a tasting room on their property in Malibu, but you can enjoy their wines at Cornell Winery in Agoura, in addition look for their gold medal Chard in most restaurants in Malibu. They do offer by appointment only tastings in Paso Robles.
