At Costco, the Christmas decorations are already on display.
A recent article in the Wall Street Journal pointed out that we are suffering from what could be called time compression, meaning that one season of the year runs directly into another, sometimes even overlapping. Summer was just over with the autumnal equinox last week, and Fall has barely begun, and yet the stress of the Thanksgiving and Christmas season is already being pushed upon us. As the article put it, This year Wal-Mart began its Christmas campaign on Aug. 22, and Kmart ran a commercial on Sept. 8 starring a gingerbread man. Toys "R'' Us has already issued its list of the "hottest" Christmas toys. According to whom? A lot parents still haven't gotten around to putting away their kids' swimsuits and summer clothes. It makes me want to stand up and holler Stop! I want to be able to savor the beauty of Fall, feel the crisp air, drink fresh apple cider, enjoy the slanting rays of the Fall sunshine and preparing hearth and home for the coming winter. I love being back North where there is a real change of seasons, yet I worry about missing Fall because of the impending busyness and stress that wants to consume us all. But - we do have a choice in this. One blessing of following the Lord Jesus Christ is that we are invited to follow a different clock and calender. DST - Divine Standard Time, one could call it. The most obvious manifestation of this calendar is the rhythm of the week, which begins with Sunday, the Lords Day (not Monday, the beginning of the work week). We begin the week with worship and ground our lives and the coming week in the goodness and providence of God and seek to serve Him first of all. In centuries past, Divine Standard Time included far more than Sundays. Life in Europe was directed largely by the church calendar, which was full of Feast Days honoring saints of the church, and other holidays. There were many problems with medieval Catholicism, but the calendar it offered structured life around knowing and loving God and neighbor, rather than the imperatives of the world. Maybe we can approach the Fall and holiday season in a similar way. By making weekly worship an absolute priority. Saying no to some commitments so you can take a hike in the hills when the foliage changes. Participating in Apple Fest downtown and other Fall Festivals. Put aside a day to participate in one of Centrals feast days - the Pork & Sauerkraut Dinner. Refuse to be sucked into the vortex of the commercial, secular holiday season and put off thinking about Thanksgiving and Christmas until they are much closer, keeping the observances of both simple and humane. Remember, holidays were meant to bless us, not cause stress and weariness. All this may be idealistic and unrealistic, but as for me and my house, were going to give it a try.

Church Family
Thank you....
Many thanks to Pastor Scott and all our good friends at Central Presbyterian Church for a wonderful send off to our new home. The cards, many kind wishes, and all the hugs were greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, Judy & Duane Gooch
With deepest gratitude from our local Missions: Women In Need (W.I.N.) wishes to thank Central for their recent donation which makes it possible for them to educate school age children and the community about domestic violence, sexual assault and provides 24 hour emergency shelter for women and children who need it. It also allows for counseling for any victim of domestic violence. Maranatha Food Pantry deeply appreciates Centrals recent donation of One Grocery Cart of Food program. It allows Maranatha to continue to assist those with food and non-food items. God bless your congregation for their generosity in helping those in need. Fruitbelt Farmworkers Christian Ministry wrote thanking Central for its very generous monetary gift. It will be a tremendous help in their efforts to share the Word with the workers.

The figures above show the recap of Central Presbyterian Church income versus expenses through September 16, 2013 which is approximately 69% of the year. A drop in weekly offerings during July and August erased the surplus we showed in the July Report. The good news is that attendance and giving have returned to earlier trends in September and we are looking for a strong close to 2013. Our spending year to date remains on forecast, and we project that our deficit by year-end will be substantially less than forecast. PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www.pdffactory.com

YOUTH GROUP
The Labor Day youth hang-out was wet and warm and full of squeals as the youth played in the Stahl Familys pool and cooked hot dogs and smores by the fire pit! A BIG THANK YOU to Sue, Mike, Jeremy, Luke, and Coco for letting us join you in your humble abode! The youth group kick-off on September 8th, partnered with St. Pauls United Methodist and St. Andrews Presbyterian, was a wonderful success! From color-races to water balloon wars, we returned to Central a giggling mess! Big thanks to our adult volunteers for the day: Sue Stahl, Jenine Grove, Amanda Bietsch, Mary Mohr, and Olivia Mullen!!! Normal youth group times are back in session: Middlers 5-6:30pm on Sundays, High Schoolers 6-7:30pm on Sundays!!! HUGE thank you and prayers of support for Scott and Madeline Wilson who begin teaching the Middler Sunday School class this month!
