2. You are given a solid sample, Q, containing a mixture of two salts.

Carry out the following tests on sample Q. Record your observations in the table below. You should test for any gas evolved. Do not breathe in any gas produced. (Salts: Copper(II) carbonate and Copper (II) nitrate) Test No. 1. Test Add a spatula of sample Q into a clean and dry test tube. Heat the sample until there is no further change. Observations Solid mixture turns black. /Black solid formed. Glowing splint rekindled/ relighted. White precipitate formed in limewater. Brown gas is produced. Do not accept yellow gas. [4] 2. Add 1 - 2 spatula of sample Q into a test tube. Add distilled water to the test tube till about three-quarter full. Shake well. Let the mixture settle for 1 - 2 min. Blue solution formed with insoluble green solid settle at the bottom of the test tube. Students are unable to identify the colour of the insoluble solid as they did not fully allow the mixture to settle Remarks Students tend to write yellow gas. Students only tend to test for CO2 and H2.

Keep the mixture for Test 3, 4 and 5. [1] 3 (a) Transfer 2cm3 of the solution from Test 2 to a clean and dry test tube. Moist/ Damp red litmus paper turns blue. Black solid formed upon heating./ blue ppt turns black. Do not accept blue solution turns black (b) Add an equal ppt/black. amount of aqueous sodium hydroxide to Students tend to write solution turns black.

the test tube, followed by 2 - 3 pieces of aluminium foil. Warm the test tube gently and carefully.

[2] 4. (a) Transfer 2cm3 of the solution from Test 2 to a clean and dry test tube. (b) Add aqueous sodium hydroxide drop-wise till excess to the test tube. [1] 5. (a) Transfer 2cm3 of the solution from Test 2 to a clean and dry test tube. Solution turns from blue to brown upon adding potassium iodide. accept yellowish students tend to write purplish black for starch test and miss out the observation after adding potassium iodide. Blue ppt formed upon adding sodium hydroxide, which is insoluble in excess. .

(b) Add about 1cm3 of potassium iodide into the test tube, followed by about 1cm3 of starch solution.

Solution turns from brown to blue-black upon adding starch solution./ black solution formed/ Solution turns black. Do not accept purple solution/ the word purple.

6.

Add a spatula of sample Q to a clean and dry test tube. Add 3cm3 of dilute hydrochloric acid into the test tube.

Effervescence seen/ Bubbling of gas observed. White ppt formed in limewater. Solid mixture dissolves in hydrochloric acid to form a blue solution.

students only manage to test for CO2 gas and did not record the observation of the solid dissolving.

[3] Underlined keywords must be there to award the marks. Conclusion: Identify the ions present in the mixture. NO3-, CO32- , Cu2+ / nitrate, carbonate, copper(II) Do not accept copper. If state more than the three ions, deduct one mark. 3 correct - [2] 2 correct - [1] 1 correct - [0] [2]
