1. Home Furnishings – An Introduction
Definition:
 The American Heritage® Dictionary defines home
furnishings as:
1. Any piece of equipment necessary or useful for
comfort or convenience.
2. Furnishings, furniture, appliances, and other
movable articles in a home.
 Collins Essential English Dictionary states that
furniture, carpets and fittings with which a room
or house is furnished.
Simply put, any articles that decorate a house and
make it more comfortable. This includes bedcovers,
spreads and throws, cushion and bolster covers,
curtains, carpets, rugs, durries, furniture, light
fixtures.
The entire range of home furnishings is
increasingly becoming accessible to the growing
middle class due to their rising incomes.
The maximum penetration has been in segments
such as bedding and window dressings. Increased
awareness and consumer interest in home interiors
have stimulated greater buying among consumers
and this trend is expected to continue at a faster
pace.
This report features the textile component of the
home furnishing industry.
2. Home Furnishing Industry in India
The Home Furnishing Industry in India is under
the purview of the Textile Industry in India, which
is, one of the largest segments of the Indian
Economy. The Indian Textile industry accounts for
nearly one fifth of the India’s industrial production.
Home to one of the largest variety of fabric, yarn
and home furnishing textiles in the world, this
industry has successfully provided employment
to a large chunk of India’s population. India is now
one of the global leaders in cotton production
and is leading the way in using organic dyes and
fibres. India remains one of the major exporters
of cushion covers, bed and bath linen and towels
when compared to markets worldwide. India
is renowned for its spectacular range of home
furnishings, which includes bedspreads, curtains,
rugs, carpets, cushion and table covers, made-ups,
bed, bath and kitchen linen, carpets and durries.
In fact the popularity of the durrie, especially
from the overseas markets, has resulted in durrie
weaving turning into a huge industry employing
hundreds of skilled workers in rural India.
Here’s a peek into the figures of export of
handmade cotton floor coverings nearly a decade
ago. The value of total exports in 1999-2000
was Rs. 4,435,802 (in 000’s), for handmade table
linen in cotton it was Rs. 4,150,857 (in 000’s), for
handmade cotton dishcloths it was Rs. 143,701
(in 000’s), for handmade bed linen in cotton it
was Rs. 1,369,123 (in 000’s), and for handmade
cotton made-ups it was Rs. 6,319,979 (in 000’s). A
strong force to reckon with in today’s competitive
home furnishings market, India is powered by
years of experience, skilled personnel, state-of-
the-art manufacturing and finishing machinery
and designing equipment. Post-liberalization, the
Indian government has opened up opportunities
for FDI and the industrial environment is
favourable for a number of industries to flourish.
The real estate boom accompanied by rising
incomes has especially contributed to a large
number of Indian households opting for home
improvements and home furnishings.
3. Production Centres – Products Related To Home
Furnishings
Spinning remained a household job in most rural
areas till recently. Mahatma Gandhi brought
handlooms back into focus during the country’s
struggle for independence as a way to resist
