FRESHER S CORNER
College education should equip one to entertain three things: a friend, an idea and oneself.
-Thomas Ehrlich
First and foremost, we congratulate all the freshers for making it to NSIT, Delhi University. You can feel proud of yourselves for entering one of the premier engineering institutes of the country. As Thomas Ehrlich believed, college is much more than just education. You are now embarking on a 4 year long journey to shape yourselves for the real world. These coming years are going to be, what you make of them. With the plethora of societies, fests and projects, NSIT offers you various activities to keep yourselves busy. It is for you to decide where your interest lies. Its your time to discover yourselves! The next few pages of this magazine will acquaint you with NSIT; its societies, culture and the fun quotient.
NSIT TIMES
WELCOME FUCCHAS
NSIT, being a disciplined institution, leaves no prospects for ragging. This comes with the disadvantage of lesser interaction with seniors and an overall hostile aura for the first few days. But then in no time, you would discover that extra dynamism appending in to your otherwise monotonous lives; a cordial interaction with not just your classmates but your seniors as well. Interacting with seniors doesnt only align you in that stream of merry making, but also gets you acquainted with the ways of utilizing your time in the best possible way.
From being muffled into thick books to enduring the traumas of threatening entrance exams, those woeful days of travail and drudgery come to an end. As you enter the college as a fresher, a new and luminous life awaits you. College is an extraordinary phase of ones life, a pathway from a school kid to a professional person. This pathway is the real time of your lives. Its about taking challenges, doing reckless things, experimenting and creating a niche for your interests. And of course, enjoying the ride!
NSIT doesnt only confer you with the cacophony of lectures or arduous exams, but also provides you with a multitude of opportunities to explore the real world. This is the place where you can follow your long cherished dreams, waiting to be realized. The key? Take an initiative.
Your seniors have a lot of knowledge to share with you, so interaction with seniors becomes a necessity. But it doesnt imply that you have to follow their footsteps blindly. Make your own path, but with some guidance. We have umpteen numbers of societies in NSIT which grant you a platform to explore and increase your knowledge, your ideas. On the very first day of college, you are bombarded with the advantages of joining each society. The first year is relatively a very relaxed year with a lot of free time. In case you find yourself confused, there is no need to feel lost or get worked up. Join as many societies as you can handle and then narrow down your options. The next thing that NSITians will be talking to you about relentlessly is the fests -the best part of ones college life. They add that extra zing and bizarre exhilaration to the otherwise not-so-happening life. NSIT is known for its 3 major ravishing fests; Resonanz, Innovision & Moksha. You get to socialize the most, during this time. Ofcourse, working for the fest, for the college, for the love of it is an altogether different feeling and probably the best one too. Fests just take a new meaning if you volunteer for them.
All of you must have heard highly of NSIT placements, and probably that is what brought you here. But then, your percentage often becomes a bigtime spoiler. Generally, 70-75 % is decent enough to let you sit for your dream company. At tending classes would be more than sufficient for this and you dont have to be buried in your books all the time. So, relax and come out of the cocoon you had ensnared yourself in, throughout your school life. Discover yourself, follow your dreams and make the best of your college life. by Akanksha Dangi

EKING
One thing that a person should keep in mind: In NSIT, Darwins theory of survival fails. The fittest may not survive but the most flexible ones do. So it is advisable that you shake off your rigid attitude before entering the colleges premises. Students, especially in the first year, are generally indulged in haranguing of the seniors. They scrounge to take advices and experiences from all possible sources. But one thing which they cant be advised on is an opportunity. More often, opportunities flow around us like a wind. But due to lack of awareness and the inertia of the human mentality, the opportunities slip from our hands like sand. And when we become aware, its often too late. And mind you, these opportunities not only help you in your success path but are also the path setters for further opportunities. So how do we stop these opportunities from slipping from our hands? What sorts of opportunities are available on campus? The basic mantra is to be incisive and alert. Gone are the days when you were spoon fed in school. Its college. Its time for you to prepare yourself to face the real aspects of life and brace yourselves. There will be more competition and the race will be a lot tougher. You are required to broaden your vision and come out of the nutshell and let go of all your inhibitions.
AN OPPORTUNITY
Its time you to start reading the notices and flyers on the wall. You pass by them many times in a day but hardly bother to look. No one will come and tell you whats happening round the corner. Visit the student initiative websites. Participate in events happening in the campus. Volunteer for society work. Working with societies and in college festivals are important platforms for good senior-junior interaction and exposure. A healthy senior interaction may or may not land you an opportunity immediately, but it might lead you to something better and more fruitful. Working in a team increases your team oriented approach and enhances you inter personal skills, which are beneficial in the long run. Keep in mind that until and unless you take an initiative, you cannot be an achiever. NSIT will give you ample opportunities; technical, managerial and cultural. Just be alert and have the zeal to grab them! by Anshay Deshwar

These meetings provide the best platform for the interaction to take place not only with your seniors but with your fellow freshmen as well. There is a plethora of societies to choose from.
SOCITEIS
Crosslinks is the colleges official Media Management Society. NSIT Debating Society, also known as Debsoc, caters to those who wish to pursue their literary interests in the form of debates and MUNs. NSIT Quiz Club provides a good platform to the inquisitive quizzers. The Dramatics SocietyAshwamedh, The Photography Society-Junoon, The Fine Arts Society-Canvas provide you ample opportunities to showcase your creative side and further hone your skills. Then you have the technical societies like IEEE and CSI where you can attend workshops, get hands on practical experience and develop your technical skills. The Consulting Club is the place to be for people interested in finance and consulting. For those who believe in social work, there are societies like Rotaract Club of NSIT and LFT-NSIT chapter. SIFE NSIT attracts entrepreneurs. If youre interested in designing cars, there is the Bullethawk society and the NSIT Motorsports which you can join. There are many other initiatives like the Collegespace, Nsitonline, Nsit Campus 360, EDC-the Entrepreneurship Development cell, etc. which you can be a part of. Joining a society has many visible and not so visible benefits. While you get to interact with people with similar interests and goals, you also build your persona. You build your skills and learn management lessons. You learn to work in groups and balance collective and individual action. You get the power to mould your life as you want. Needless to say, there is always a strong bond of friendship among the members of any society, which grows stronger with each collective initiative that the society undertakes. The interpersonal skills you develop through the exposed platform, helps you in the long run especially when you sit for your placements or may be higher studies. Agnes DeMille once said, I learned 3 important things in college - to use a library, to memorize quickly and visually and to drop asleep at any time given a horizontal surface and fifteen minutes. Add exams, initiatives and the fun and frolic with friends; what you get is a cocktail of a special college life. Get acquainted with the mantra of Sleep, Studies, Societies, friends - balance them all and youll have a great stay at the college. The quality of a university is measured more by the kind of students it turns out, than the kind it takes in. Make yourself worthy enough to be called an alumnus of this institution after 4 years. Start working from the first day itself. Make the best use of your fun time. by Sumant Arora
Of course there is a lot of knowledge in the universities: the freshmen bring a little in; the seniors dont take much away, so knowledge sort of accumulates. -Abbot Lawrence Lowell
Stay here for a couple of weeks and you will realize that you can manage a bountiful of free time, especially in the first year. A relatively comfortable examination system leaves us with enough time to take initiatives. Of course there are lectures to attend and other such academic limitations, but all those things are pretty manageable once you know what to do, when to do and how to do the right things. And once again, we stress on the fact that synergizing with your seniors is the best way to get to know all the know-how. They have the accumulated knowledge passed down from generations of students passing out. A good rapport with your seniors can do wonders for you in ways unimaginable. But as we mentioned, the trick is to find the best possible channel of communication. Fortunately there are a number of clubs and societies and student run initiatives in NSIT that conduct regular meetings.

wherein models walked the ramp, oozing confidence. Rangmanch had students from each branch dance to bollywood numbers and bhangra, with the crowd cheering avidly for those on the stage. During Mr. & Ms. Resonanz, participants danced elegantly, sung beautifully and answered questions very confidently. The fest ended with the Zephyr night as the Pratibha band set fire on the stage. We still relish those jubilant memories of the fest. After a week from the beginning of the even semester, we geared up for the preparations of another fest. The well acclaimed technomanagerial fest, Innovision 2012. The two day annual inter college fest was scheduled on 18th& 19th February. The fest enraptured the college with events, captivating talks and workshops. There were technical, literary, managerial and a few cultural events. Technical events like robo-wars, black pearl and carnage were huge crowd pullers and acquainted us with the fun part of technology. At the same time, certain informal events like treasure hunt, musical chairs,
tambola saw huge participation. Not to forget the most revelling part of the mornings, Columbus ride, the gaming zone-virtual arena, go-karting and zorbing. Innovision 2012 came up with a new dimension- Biovision, thanks to the enthusiastic students of Bio-Technology. The organizing team worked perfectly to make this new found event and the whole fest a huge success. Icing on the cake was the defence expo, roller hockey and laser show, when each soul was invigorated with energy and a bizarre enthusiasm. Innovision 2012 ended with Felicity- band performances by some notable bands; Jehovah, Arcane Deception, Urban Soundscape and Rise of Uncertainity. Although, some minor glitches did creep in, the fest was a huge success and gave everyone immense opportunities to pursue their technical or managerial prowess. During all this time, the fourth year students had been working for the most prodigious cultural fest of the year, Moksha. May be a parody, but Moksha is more famous than NSIT itself. Such is the impression
of Moksha. The preparations for the fest started two months before the fest. In no time, a bizarre enthusiasm was endowed in every nook and corner of the college. The colourful description provided by the seniors and the fervour with which they spoke about the fest made everyone want to work for it. With that, everyone geared up for some more action. All that one could see was sparkles and fevicol scattered in the fine arts room, a bunch of students seeking sponsors, event managers running to the admin now and then, causing a lot of commotion, creating an aura of dynamism and vigour. And then came those 3 most wonderful days; 15th, 16th and17th March. The fest encompassed over 100 events. We got to see Bhukkad Gali in Moksha 2012, a treat for all the foodies. The theatre societies of several colleges displayed some amazing plays in the Main Audi. Overall, the fest was a delight for everyone, a perfect place to be at. Once again, the most prominent aspect remained the mega events-
Mudra, Rouge, Street Dance, Dhwani, Oorja and ofcourse. Fahrenite. Mudra - a delight to watch the music and rhythm appending with the most graceful movements of dance. All glam quotient levels were surpassed as models walked on the ramp in Rouge. Street Dance, well lets just say it brought in Step up 4 at NSIT. Dhwani was a major success as the singers mesmerized the audience with their stupendous voices. Oorja brought in the best dancing teams from several colleges, attracting a huge crowd to watch those astounding performances. The most happening event was Fahrenite, when KK performed in the Moksha ground; some very memorable moments. The adrenaline levels went higher as he sang the most beautiful songs. The realm of the fest was so colourful that it took us all over. Moksha lived up to its name and had each of us floating over the beautiful lyrics, the rhythm, the music; it was the time when each soul got revitalized with emotions and love for each of our friends. by Akanksha Dangi

The name was called, and it was my turn now. I took the steps forward but my legs seemed to be bolted beneath the pedestrian. The stage shivered, or was that me? ! So was it the fear of the screech of rampaging crowd, or was it the irony of being chagrined. Or maybe the fear of getting the Adams apple stuck inside. We all must have been through this at some point of our lives, and thus we often tend to persuade ourselves from stepping into the boots.
So, it is better that you eat a big dose of bullshit and cry in the mamas lap and throw away this page right away. And for those who still have the spark to live the time of their lives, please read on. Amy is a symbol of your fears; she is the slow poison who will snatch away the slightest possibilities of your success. She might looks good at the first glance, as she provides you with the ease of letting go but what you have to realize is that running away from the Christmas ghosts will only fill your life with unsuccessful lacunae and will make you nothing more than an underdog. And being a college student, you should desire to dash after your fears and shoo them away before they hit your conscious hard. Its like the tip of the iceberg. The thing which people dont realize is that the little creeps of everyday keeps on compiling, waiting to crash over your head. These fears and uncertainties can be of anything swinging from stage frights, hesitations, pessimism or anything. You need to realize that you have to search for these ambiguities and take your stand over it. With context to college life, if you dont overcome these pitfalls, it wont let

She seduces you to the escape path of the lust of your shattering dreams, and you keep getting engulfed into the boulevard. Ok LOL I feel you had enough portion of philosophy and now coming to the point. To all the asses around, cuties you are just being another kid on the block, who will be smashed, squashed and insulted by the profanity of others egos.
you progress, which may be in academics, your extracurricular or your personal development. There have been a lot of instances where I have seen people abstaining themselves from precious moments and opportunities because of the lack of confidence in themselves and the fear of failure. Let me make you clear on one point that until and unless you break the shell of hesitations, you will never be the one standing out of the crowd. Dont you dream about being admired? Dont you wish to be the leader or an achiever? Yes you do! We all do. But only few are really able to foster these dreams into realities. If he can do it, why not you? No one is born smart, its his strong will that makes him what he is.
If you really want do something big and want to make your presence amongst your comrades then you have to take the risk. Develop the confidence in yourself. Dont let the failures stop you. Failure is a part of success, so instead of refraining from its fears, accept it as an accolade and continue to cherish your hopes. Be the stud of your life and live it to your best.

Amongst all the welcomes and the congratulations frosting our freshers, we realize that (much from personal experience) college life has much more to offer than school life. The subjects get more technical, engrossing and strenuous (interesting to many as well), you start focusing on future, but in all of this, one should not miss out the fun and the frolic college life has to offer. NSIT gives you the perfect resources to socialize, hangout and relax. To save you the hard work of exploring and settling down to good hangout places, we put forth this article, with the sole purpose of helping you to enjoy this joy ride.

STOP COMPARING
2012 ISSUE
There is no denying the fact that we at NSIT love to make undue comparisons, which is something that must be avoided. As Roshan averred We are NSIT and thats it. Whether we like it or not, we are not the toast of the town. Comparisons with the IITs/NITs are inevitable but it is a great disservice to the work we do if we brood more time over the comparison rather than doing actual work. Instead of comparing yourself to others, create the habit of comparing yourself to you. The great heights that initiatives at NSIT have reached like the coders at G-Soc and the ICPC performances, the NSIT Quiz Clubs wins throughout India, being the first host of a TEDx in Delhi werent products of Have-theydone-it-at-IIT-lets-replicate-it but were robust student initiatives. Roshan did not sit for the campus placements and was never inclined towards taking the CAT. He says that his clarity of goals made the decision easier for him. His sincere advice to the juniors: Instead of blindly following the bandwagon, chalk out your interests and make a decision as early as possible. This would really help you in the long run.

MY FIRST CHOICE
He is prompt to answer this one and says that engineering was his first choice and he had absolutely no second thoughts about this. He felt that any liberal arts degree could be replicated via reading anywhere and wanted to do something fun in math and computer science.
When asked about his Stanford admit and how he managed this stupendous feat, he replies very modestly, I dont understand why people have overrated an admit to a college. No doubt it is a good college but it is not everything. He further states, If looking for a Masters program, dont put your efforts hunting for that glamorous internship but put more sweat towards your research experience which is what really counts. Roshan has published five research papers in a wide array of subjects like Business, Economics, game theory and Computer Science as well. Even his corporate internship choices have been in strict correlation with his interests like at IBM, The Economist Intelligence Unit and HDFC Bank. His advice to the juniors, try and be aware of the projects going on at NSIT/IIIT Delhi/IIT Delhi or any other university you can get access to. And get involved in the one which matches your interest and NEVER join one just to gain some resume points.

LIFE @ B-SCHOOL
Quite a few students do become cynical and resentful about management education after coming here, partly due to the unnaturally high workload and lack of time to grasp everything that is being taught. Astronomical salaries, extremely intelligent peers and great faculty are all very true, but seem to be slightly overhyped in the outside world. This is sad because these overbearing labels tend to shift attention away from some of the really good things that one can experience at a B-School (excellent academic and nonacademic resources, plenty of opportunities to form good friendships, some great exchange program etc.) and some of the hype and hero worship surrounding our management institutions needs to come down so that students can have rational expectations from what they will get out of the course. What type of training and education does a B-School intend to impart? The courses taught at a B-School can be roughly divided into Finance and Accounting, Economics, Operations, Organizational Behaviour, Marketing, Business Policy and Miscellaneous categories. In the first year, courses pertaining to all categories are taught. In second year, students are free to make their own choices. Class Participation (CP) is considered an important component. Thus, contributing to the lectures is a general requisite to do very well in a course. Besides CP, students are evaluated on assignments, projects and presentations made in class. Many engineering students are tempted towards non-technical field and their focus shifts towards MBA preparation, from the very early days of graduation. So, who should actually be looking towards an MBA? What qualities does a B-School look for in a potential candidate? It is not anyones prerogative to dictate who should or shouldnt go for an MBA. However, to gain the most out of an MBA, one should be able to relate the course knowledge to something seen in the world of business. In this sense, it is still a bit unfortunate that a significant chunk of the students at Indian B-schools are freshers. After having been through one and a half years of courses, I am of the opinion that the learning is much greater if one has worked in an organisation and can relate the theoretical concepts to something seen in practice. Of course, experience is not a prerequisite in Indian B-schools. The qualities looked at include quantitative ability, communication skills and a good track record in school and undergrad. While studying at NSIT, which activities were you a part of and how did these help you in achieving your ultimate aim? I enjoy quizzing and thus was an integral part of the NSIT Quiz Club. Quizzers are looked at as favourable candidates for management education because of the breadth of knowledge possessed and the passion to know more about new, unknown fields. This, in turn, is also an essential component of B-school education. Ideally, what type of activities (events, projects, societies, and internships) would help in enhancing an MBA aspirants resume? From a recruiters point of view, the most valuable skills on the resume include: relevant work experience (Job/ Internship), a good academic track record, positions of responsibility held in college/work life and diversity in the set of extra-curricular activities pursued. How good you need to be depends on the set of peers you are competing with. In some of Indias best B-schools, one needs to be unmatched in some aspects, or really good in all of them for a stand-out resume. What would be your advice for the first year students at NSIT? Take interest in the subjects taught at NSIT. You are engineers first, and all career decisions should ideally have lesser priorities than the one you are following at present. Academic performance is important and hence, exams should be taken seriously. Beyond this, NSIT offers lots of free time to pursue extra-curricular activities, projects or internships. Experiment with different things in your first two years, and see what you are comfortable with. By third year, hopefully, you would have some idea on what you should do beyond engineering.
Sharat Nambissan graduated from NSIT in the batch of 2010 and is presently pursuing MBA from IIMAhmedabad. Here, he talks about life at a B-School and how he got inclined towards the management field.
You graduated as an engineer and would soon complete your MBA from the most prestigious B-School in the country. Did you plan it this way? I had never planned to do an MBA, but yes it was one of the alternatives that I had considered before joining NSIT. There was no definite approach as such. I was as confused as the average entrant to an undergraduate, and tried to push the decision making as far into the future as possible. The realisation that I should definitely give a shot at management education occurred to me around a year before I gave my CAT exam. What embarked your interest towards a career in Management? I do not come from a business family, and hence, never had any insights about the value of a management career, apart from the ones derived from mass media. A career in management was highly valued in the job market and society and paid good remuneration. Besides, the nature of work dealt with day to day practical life problems. These notions helped forge my interest towards a management career. What was your strategy while preparing for CAT? About an year before the CAT, I started giving a few mock tests to see where I stood. The results were fairly optimistic and I got a feeling that I stood a decent chance. I tried to go through the study material pertaining to mock CAT preparation. There werent too many new concepts but a better approach, while solving certain problems, was highlighted by the material. I also joined a mock cat a few months before CAT. This helped in assessing my performance with respect to others. How has your experience been at IIM-A? What are the various situations, events and tasks that you come across on a day- to-day basis? IIM-A was an altogether new world for me. First year students at IIM generally have very little time to do much beyond studying their course subjects. Whatever little time is left is taken up by sleep and extracurricular activities. At IIM-A, the case based method ensures that you have something to read up and prepare on a daily basis. Professors vary in their degree of strictness, but the expectation of coming prepared to class is evident. Surprise quizzes keep people on their toes all the time. Second year is much more spread out and gives people the opportunity to explore their areas of interest. After the rigor of the first year, it is a welcome change for most students.
