renovating your kitchen
Homeimprovement Magazine Wellington October 2013 Issue #1 3
What is the difference?
Any successful building project
starts with the designer as its
their job to take your wish list and
translate it into a reality. However
deciding on the best designer
for your project can raise a few
questions.
What does a Draughtsperson
do?
Traditionally, draughting staff, also
known as architectural technicians,
work behind the scenes, feshing
out design ideas to translate them
into full technical drawings. They
may be employed by an architectural
practice or be self-employed. For
a smaller project, such as a new
garage, a draughtsperson is a sure
bet and will be the low cost option
in many situations.
Architect vs Architectural
Designer
There is a broad overlap in the skill
set and range of services they each
provide.
An Architect has usually gained
an architectural degree and will be
registered with the New Zealand
Registered Architects Board
(NZRAB). To practice as an architect
they must hold an annual practicing
certifcate issued by the NZRAB.
Many architects belong to the New
Zealand Institute of Architects
(NZIA).
An Architectural Designer has
most likely (but not necessarily) also
studied at a tertiary institution. Many
architectural designers belong to
Architectural Designers New Zealand
(ADNZ). With a wide range of skills
and experience, an architectural
designer is a great choice for a new
home or more complex renovation.
Simply put, the only thing an
architectural designer cannot do is
call themselves an architect.
It all depends on the scale and
complexities of your project. The
important thing is to ask the right
questions ensuring you fnd the right
ft for you and your project. Dont be
afraid to ask your potential designer
what their qualifcations are, as it is
confusing.

planning
colour palette
your
Any renovation or building project is a daunting process flled with
decisions. And one of the most time-consuming and diffcult is often
in regards to selecting that perfect colour palette.
You want your interior colour scheme to be a canvas onto which you
can hang artwork, display much loved possessions and of course live
with. Yet you dont want it to be boring. Colour, pattern and texture
will add vibrancy, personality and life to the space.
A good rule to remember is 60, 30, 10. 60% dominant colour, 30%
secondary colour and 10% fnishes. A rule which will allow you to
create plain areas of
colour on which the eye
can rest, while using
patterns and texture to
relieve the boredom.
Most importantly, this
rule will help create a
balanced, rather than
overwhelming space.
Creating a mood-
board of images and
inspiration will provide you with something tangible to take along
when meeting with your colour consultant, who will then be able to
assist you in drawing out base and accent colours. When meeting
with your colour consultant it is just as important to know what you
dont like, as much as what you do like. Collate ideas from magazines,
print pictures out from the Internet, gather inspiration from wherever
and whatever you can!
Before you go too far down the track of selecting paint or wallpaper,
it is critical to make
a decision on your
fooring material and
colour. As this is the
most expensive, and
diffcult, component of
your colour scheme to
change it is essential
you get it right frst
you can then build your
scheme from there.

selecting
tradesperson
the right
Why The Right Tradesperson Is So Important
The construction team you choose to work with is going
to be instrumental in creating your home, and will help
make the process as enjoyable as possible. You need to
understand each other, be able to communicate well and
fundamentally like one another, so it is important, and ok
to shop around and trust your instincts.
When the tenders come in, dont automatically choose the
cheapest. Use a number of criteria to decide, such as:
Price - if a tender is way above or below the others you
should question it. Some builders tender low on the initial
bid just to get the job, but theyll probably be forced to cut
corners, or rely on expensive variations along the way to
make the job pay. Dont forget you get what you pay for.
Examples of work - ask them if you can talk to
someone who has used them to build or renovate, and
look at examples of their work.
Qualifcations - fnd out if they are qualifed, whether
they are licensed to do the work, and whether they are
members of New Zealand Certifed Builders Association
(CBANZ) or Registered Master Builders Federation
(RMBF).
Finally, talk to each one and decide if you think you
can work with them on a daily basis. You need to be
comfortable with them, be able to communicate clearly,
openly and honestly and be confdent they are capable of
turning the designs into a high quality end result.

Cherrytrees Unique Wholesale
model means everyone wins!!
Since 1996 Cherrytree has been saving its
members tens of thousands of dollars on
their building and renovation projects and
on a massive range of everyday items.
The range is so huge that they now sell
over half a million products from over
2,000 household name brands. Its all
quality brands and its all sold at transparent
wholesale prices plus a small handling fee.
While many people join for a specic
project, most join for the savings on a huge
range of everyday items because these are
bought again & again.
The Wellington Club owners, Simon
Thomson & Tracey Lewis are passionate
about helping their club members to realise
their dreams with the projects they embark
on. We all work hard for our money and we
should be able to buy great quality products
and brands to make our homes special
- thats where a Cherrytree membership
works to the advantage of each member,
says Simon Thomson. The reason I love
Cherrytree so much is that everyone wins:
The suppliers, the members and Cherrytree
and that is unique.
When buying in retail you have no idea how
much the retailer paid for the item so cannot
know if you are getting a good deal at
Cherrytree we have absolute transparency.
To nd out how over 20,000 Kiwi families
buy smarter, go to www.cherrytree.co.nz or
call 0800 Cherrytree and they will send you

renovating
what to expect
your kitchen
Where to start:
Do your homework. From pictures from
the internet and magazines, to ideas seen
in showrooms and home shows, gather
inspiration and identify the look you like.
Pricing and Budgets
The kitchen is the most expensive room in
the house, and it can be diffcult to judge
how far your dollars will go. The approximate
breakdown of cost is:
45% cabinetry
10% benchtops
15% appliances
20% subtrades
5% sinks, tapware and splashbacks
5% cost overruns
Consider these costs and budget wisely. Be
realistic about your investment and invest in
items that are important, and will serve you
well.
Qualifed Kitchen Designer:
Invest in an experienced and qualifed NKBA
designer, who can do it all. One who can give
you design options, professional advice, foor
plans, specifcations, fnishes, elevations,
computer perspectives, installation drawings
and will manage your renovation from start
to fnish, with site visits and a fnal sign off.
Discuss your wish list, ideas and desires, this
is your opportunity for your dream kitchen, so
be involved.
Be prepared to pay Design Fees, which vary
depending on the service provided.
Be Prepared:
Allow for 2/3 weeks of work/disruption in
your home
Remove all items from the work area,
protect foors and use dust covers
With the Heart of the Home being
removed, set up a camp kitchen with jug,
microwave, toaster, crockery, cutlery, use
another sink
Have prepared frozen meals, use your
barbecue, dine out
Have a quiet space for you, for children, for
pets
Set house rules for the workmen (hours,
areas off limits)
Give the tradesmen space and time to
complete their work, check things are going
according to plan.
Installation Process:
Confrm who will manage, control and
run the project smoothly, to avoid any
unnecessary costly delays
Book the dates that work with the family,
avoiding such times as school holidays
The frst phase involves the removal of
existing appliances, joinery, bench-tops,
repositioning of electrical and plumbing
items, gib stopping, painting, fooring.
The delivery and installation of joinery and
appliances. The template, delivery and
installation of bench-tops
The second phase will see the plumbing
completed and electrical items wired in
The last phase is the fnal inspection

Lets face it, renovating can cost a not-so-pretty penny and it

doesnt take much to amount to the upper end of thousands
when you start selecting ttings. So its refreshing to have
the likes of Millen Homeware with an impressive selection of
contemporary to classic bathroom and kitchen wares that are
really well priced.
A new comer to Wellington, Millen Homeware has been in
business for 12 years with branches in Auckland, Hamilton,
North Shore, Christchurch and Takanini. In Wellington, Millen
Homewares showroom is located in Udy Street and has
everything in store that the website presents, which makes all
the difference when you can see the real thing.
On display you will nd a large range of tapware, showers,
heated towel rails, range hoods, electric and gas cooktops in
stainless steel or ceramic, laundry tubs and even an extensive
kitchen sink display that Wellington seems to lack. You can buy
straight from the store, as the warehouse is just out the back.
On the odd chance that an item may not be in store, it can be
in Wellington in 3 days.
To give you an idea of pricing, an entire bathroom package,
including full shower, mixer and shower slider, toilet and vanity
costs as little as $999 including GST. They also offer awesome
kitchen package deals. Great for rentals that need to upgrade
an outdated area.
Store manager Alex has a helpful, welcoming nature and this
provides a wonderfully non-invasive environment for customers
which we all appreciate. He encourages visitors to Try it out.
See if it suits your size. When it comes to shower enclosures
and baths this is certainly sound advice.
So, if you are renovating your kitchen or bathroom and dont
want to spend the earth but also want a wide range of choices,
do yourself a favour and visit Millen Homeware.
