INTRODUCTION

A. Statement of the Problem Different types of solutions in osmosis have different effects on the cell. These effects are dependent on what medium is used in the solution. Soaking eggs in the vinegar will soften the shell making it appear to be naked. The question then is, what will happened to the egg soaked in hypertonic solution?

B. Background Information Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a region of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential, across a partially permeable membrane (Ibrahim, 2007). It means that some molecules are allowed to pass through while some are not. There are different roles of Osmosis First is, it helps in absorption of water from the soil by root hair. Second, it helps in cell to cell movement of water. Third, it plays a key role in the growth of radicle and plumule during the seed germination and lastly it develops turgor pressure which helps in opening and closing of stomata and movements of Leaf lets in Mimosa pudica (Rastogi, 2004).

C. Derivation of Hypothesis: In hypertonic solution, concentration of water in the solution is lower than in the cell (Rabago et. Al, 2003). It means more water will go outside to balance the concentration, so it isexpected that the cell, represented by the eggwith dissolved shell, will lose weight and shrink.

D. Hypothesis: If the medium used is in hyper tonic solution, the egg will shrink.

E. Objectives: General Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the change of weight brought about by osmosis by testing with hypotonic, isotonic and hypertonic media used with respect to time via water displacement test. The specific objectives were: 1. To identify the different factors that could affect osmosis 2. To explain the change of weight of substance by using the water displacement method

MATERIALS AND METHODS A. Procedure The researchers will prepare the naked egg a week before they will test such eggs in the different solutions. They will put four chicken eggs in four separate containers and submerge it in vinegar. After 24 hours of having the eggs in such acid, they will carefully change the vinegar to a new one. They will return the eggs in the refrigerator and keep them there for one week. After such time, they will drain the vinegar again. The eggs will be weighed and by this time, they will be ready to act as a dialyzing membrane. The researchers will then prepare the control and three solutions, namely hypertonic, hypotonic and isotonic, using water and powdered juice. After such solutions are made, one egg will be put on each beaker. The researchers will measure the change in weight of the egg, using water displacement method, every five minutes for 50 minutes.

B. Schematic Design The components of the hypertonic solution to be used would be 15 tablespoons of powdered juice and 50 ml of water. Such substances will be mixed thoroughly in a beaker. The hypotonic solution would then contain five tablespoons of powdered juice while the isotonic solution would contain 10 tablespoons. Both would be mixed with 50ml of water and would be mixed well. Unlike the others, the control set-up would not contain any powdered juice but instead just 50 ml of water. This will allow the researchers to see the effect of powdered juice on the naked egg.
