A)GENERAL A.1) THEINSTITUTE


The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) is one of the higher Institutes of Technology inthecountry set up with the objectives of making available facilities for higher education,researchandtraininginvariousfieldsofScienceandTechnology.Itwasestablishedin 1958. TheInstituteislocatedatPowaiinacampusextendingover220hectaresamidstpicturesque surroundingswithViharandPowailakesoneitherside. At present, Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Doctoral programmes are offered by Aerospace Engineering,ChemicalEngineering,CivilEngineering,ComputerScienceandEngineering,Earth Sciences, Energy Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and MetallurgicalEngineeringandMaterialsScienceDepartmentsandbyInterdisciplinarygroupsin IndustrialEngineeringandOperationsResearchandSystemsandControlEngineering. The Industrial Design Centre of the Institute offers a 2year M.Des. Programme in Industrial Design,VisualCommunication,Animation,InteractionDesign,MobilityandVehicleDesignanda Ph.D. Programme in Design. M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in Applied Geology and Applied Geophysics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, M.Sc. Programme in Applied Statistics and InformaticsareofferedbytherespectiveDepartments.TheDepartmentofPhysicsalsooffersa4 yearB.Tech.ProgrammeinEngineeringPhysics.TheHumanitiesandSocialSciencesDepartment offersdoctoralprogrammesanda2yearM.Philprogramme.TheCentreofStudiesinResources Engineering(CSRE)offersa2yearM.Tech.ProgrammeinGeoinformatics&NaturalResources Engineering and doctoral programmes. The Departments of Physics, Energy Science and Engineering, CentreforEnvironmentalScienceandEngineering arealsoofferingM.Sc.Ph.D DualdegreeprogrammesandtheiradmissionsarethroughJAM.TheInstituteoffers M.Tech.in TechnologyandDevelopmentofferedbyCTARAandalsooffersadoctoralprogramme, Ph.Din Nano Technology offered by CRNTS. The Institute offers Cross Departmental M.Tech programmeinMaterials,Manufacturing&Modelling(MMM)offeredbyMechanicalEngineering, Met. Engineering & Mat. Sci. & Mathematics. The Shailesh J. Mehta, School of Management offers a 2year Master of Management programme and also a doctoral programme. The Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in Biotechnology,M.Tech.andPh.D.programmesinBiomedicalEngineering andM.Sc.Ph.D.Dual Degree Programme in Biotechnology. The Institute also has PG Dual Degree Programmes (M.Tech.+Ph.D.)inseveraldisciplines. TheInstituteonanaverageadmits1131candidatesfortheUndergraduateprogrammesand1476 candidates for different Postgraduate and Doctoral programmes every year. Students from Bangladesh,Egypt,Ethiopia,Fiji,Iran,Iraq,Jordan,Mauritius,Malaysia,Nepal,Palestine,Sri Lanka,VietnamandYemenarealsoundergoingtraininginvariousprogrammes.Inadditionto these academic programmes, the Continuing Education Programme (CEP) organizes short, intensivecoursesinspecializedtopicsbothforpracticingengineersaswellasforteachersfrom engineering colleges; and also conducts seminar and conferences on current scientific and technological developments. Further, teachers from various engineering colleges also join Instituteforthepostgraduateanddoctoralprogrammes.underQualityImprovementprogramme (QIP).

A.2) RESEARCHFACILITIES
All the departments, centres, schools and interdisciplinary groups of the Institute have well equippedresearchlaboratoriesandworkshopfacilities.Inaddition,thereareanumberofcentral facilities,whichincludeComputerCentre,CentralLibraryandCentralWorkshop.TheCentral

Libraryhasaverylargecollectionofbooks,backvolumesofperiodicals,standardspecifications andotherliterature.TheLibrarynowhasmorethan3lakhsbooksandvolumesandsubscribesto over 1500 current journals in Science, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences. The ComputerCentreofIITBombayprovideshighendnetworkedcomputingfacilities. TheInstitutehasmanyresearchcollaborationswithleadinguniversitiesinUSA,Europe,Japan, andotherEastAsiancountries.Aspartofthesecollaborations,thepostgraduatestudentsget opportunitiestocarryoutjointresearchprojectswithfacultyandstudentsfromtheseuniversities. The location of IIT Bombay, in close proximity to several leading R&D Centers and major industrial establishments, offers excellent opportunities to interact with them and plan some research programmes in collaboration with them. The Industrial Research and Consultancy Centre(IRCC)coordinatescollaborativeprojectswithindustryandotherresearchorganizations suchasBARC,TIFRandCSIR.TheInstituteisactivelycollaboratingwithseveralorganizationsof othercountriesonabilateralbasis.

A.3) STUDENTSAMENITIES
TheInstituteisfullyresidentialandhas14hostelsforstudents.Eachhostelisanindependent entitywithitsownmessfacilities,recreationareas,etc.Howeverstudentsmaybepermittedto havetheirownarrangementsforaccommodationoutsidecampus.Someflatletsareavailablefor marriedresearchscholars. Extracurricular activities are provided by the Students Gymkhana. These activities include Sports, Cultural programmes and Social Service. Various clubs of the Gymkhana encourage individual talents of students in hobbies such as painting, modeling, music, photography, aeromodellingandfabricationofelectronicdevices.Aswimmingpoolisanadditionalfacility.A wellplannedStudentActivitiesCentre(SAC)routinelyorganizesseveralvibrantextracurricular events.

A.4)Ph.D.PROGRAMME
As a result of the sound research base and extensive infrastructural facilities available, the InstituteoffersPh.D.programmeinawiderangeofareasinEngineering,Science&Humanities andSocialSciences.ThebroadobjectivesofthePh.D.programmearetokeeppacewiththe expanding frontiersof knowledgeand to provide research training relevant tothe social and economicneedsofthecountry. TheacademicprogrammeleadingtothePh.D.degreeisbroadbasedandinvolvesaminimum course credit requirement and research thesis. The Institute also encourages research in interdisciplinary areas through a system of joint supervision and interdepartmental group activities.Thepresenceofastrongresearchorientedfacultyprovidesexcellentopportunitiesfor suchprogramme.TheInstituteundertakessponsoredresearchanddevelopmentprojectsfrom industrialandotherorganizationsinpublicaswellasprivatesector. A.5)ELIGIBILITYCRITERIONFORPH.D.ADMISSION
A.5.1)GeneraleligibilitycriterionforAdmissioninallacademicunits:Departments, Centres,SchoolsandInterdisciplinaryGroups ONEofthefollowinginappropriatesubjectareas: 1)MastersDegreeinEngineering/Technologyorequivalent,withFirstclassor60% marks (55%marksforSC/ST) 2) MastersdegreeinScienceorBachelorsdegreeinEngineering/Technologyorequivalent, with First class or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST). For admission in the Department of HumanitiesandSocialSciencesandintheIndustrialDesignCentre,thepercentagerequirement is55%marksorequivalent(50%forSC/ST).Candidatesmeetingthisrequirementmust also fulfillONEofthefollowingadditionalrequirements: ValidGATE/CEEDScore CSIR/UGC/NBHM/DBT/DSTInspireAwardorFellowship. Minimumof2yearsofprofessionalworkexperience,forSponsored(SW)/Self Financed(SF)/InstituteStaff(IS)category. Minimum6monthsprojectworkexperienceinIITBombay,forProjectStaff(PS) category.

A.5.2)RequirementsforTeachingAssistantship(TAship)/ResearchAssistantship (RAship)
CandidateswithMastersDegreeinEngineering/Technologyorequivalentdegreeareeligiblefor TAship/RAship.CandidateswithoutMastersDegreeinEngineering/Technologyorequivalent degreerequireeitheravalidGATEscoreorqualifiedthroughaNationalLevelTestUGC/CSIR/ NBHM/DBTJRFshiporDSTInspirefellowshiptobeconsideredforTA/RAship. Inadditiontothegeneraleligibilitycriterion,theapplicantmustsatisfytheeligibilitycriteria specifiedfortherespectiveDepartments/Centres/Schools/InterdisciplinaryGroups. AsperMHRDdirectives,theemployeesofanyorganizationsundergoingPh.D./Postgraduate Programmes by availing study leave with or without pay are not eligible for Teaching Assistantship(TA)/ResearchAssistantship(RA)category.Suchcandidates,iffoundsuitable,will havetocompletetheirprogrammeasSelfFinance/Sponsoredfulltimeorparttime,asthecase maybe.Studentsgettingassistantships(TeachingAssistantship/ResearchAssistantship)fromthe Institute can join projects sponsored by external agencies like Aeronautics Research & DevelopmentBoard(ARDB),DepartmentofScience&Technology(DST),CouncilforScientific& Industrial Research (CSIR) etc. and obtain corresponding fellowships in lieu of Teaching Assistantship(TA)/ResearchAssistantship(RA)category.
