University of Northern Iowa Out-of-State/International Student Teaching Non-UNI Application 1. What do you want to accomplish as a teacher? To me, education is more than just a gateway to economic opportunity. I see students as I see myself; we are all thinking, feeling individuals attempting to make sense of our world and find our place in it. Therefore, as a teacher I want to help my students master skills necessary for a fulfilling life, from skillful expression of their ideas to the ability to critically analyze those of others. Most importantly, I want to instill in my students the passion and metacognitive skills for lifelong learning. 2. Describe any unique skills and talents you have which would be helpful to you as a teacher. In both my field experience and my tutoring job, my supervisors have commented on my commitment to students as people. I care about them and their development, and I feel that comes across in my teaching. If students know their teacher cares, it has been my experience that learning improves. Students are more respectful and attentive, have higher self-efficacy, and take greater ownership of the work they do in class because if their teacher values what they do, then they know they should too. In addition, I am an extrovert, light-hearted, a confident communicator, and like to bring creativity into my classroom. 3. Why do you want to do your student teaching in an out-of-state or international setting? My career aspiration is to teach in American international schools. I believe student teaching in an international school will be an invaluable learning and networking opportunity. x (mark X here) I believe that I have the qualities to become a successful teacher.
