Chant is the practice of murmuring the mantra within and not speaking any word in air. While chanting, one should sit on Sukhasana (easy posture). Sitting on Padmasana (cross legs resting on opposite thighs) brings better fruits. While performing the chant, the image/picture of idol of the God/Goddess (deity) to which the chant is associated or devoted to must be well situated with full devotion in front of the chant performer. Tilak (mark on fore head) must be put with Vermillion or Asthagandha on the forehead of the God/Goddess's image/picture/idol and then putting on the forehead of self by the performer. Asthagandha Tilak is considered to be more

auspicious/pious leading to early results. Asthagandha contains Gorochan, Laktak, Roli, Vermillion, camphor, butter oil, milk and honey i.e. eight contents. Grinding almost equal quantities of all these contents together results in Asthagandha. If necessary, small quantity of water - preferably Ganges water can be added to make the paste a semi-fluid. The chant performer should have a Kusha (Grass) or cotton Asan (sitting cushion) to sit on while in chant. The lighting of lamp with straight string is recommended. Two lamps may be lighted for better returns. One lamp should be lighted in butter oil and the other in mustard oil. The mustard oil should be lighted on the right hand side of the chant performer and the butter oil lamp should be lighted on the left hand side of the chant performer. If the chant is devoted to Lord Shiva or Deviji, there should be continuous burning of Dhoop throughout the chant period in addition to the lamps. The number of mantra chants should be equally divided on the days the chant performer is likely to devote. This number must be performed every day to meet the total number at the end. While starting the chant, state your aim before the deity, that I (Name of the chant performer) for this purpose (state the purpose here) am performing this chant. The deity is humbly requested to get my purpose achieved. After performing the chant, one tenth of the number of chant must be performed with Havana (fire sacrifice). In fire sacrifice, Til (Black seeds of Sesamum plant) with half the quantity of rice and equal quantity of grinded sugar and barley half of quantity of grinded sugar are mixed together with some quantity of Havana Samagri. If possible, on every murmuring of the mantra a small quantity of this mixture is put to sacrifice in fire, which is burnt in a port first. On every sacrifice a small spoonful of butter oil is powered in fire. This action fulfils the performance of chant devoted to. During the chant of NAVARNA MANTRA the exception is that only butter oil sacrifice is allowed. For counting of the chants, use beaded garland. The number of beads in the garland must be 108 but should be counted as 100. For the chant performed in devotion of Lord Shiva or Goddess Deviji i.e. Goddess Durga, the garland recommended is of Rudraksha (seeds of tree Elecarpus ganitrus) and for chant performed in devotion to Lord Narayana or Goddess Lakshmi, the garland of Tulsi (basil plant) is recommended. But in general for all Deities/Lords/Goddess if no specific garland is available, the garland of beads of sandal can serve the purpose. Counting of chant on fingers is prohibited. The continuous meditation on the feet of the deity is a must throughout the chant.
