Before the Roman Missal (Sacramentary) of 1970 the feast of Saint Gabriel (Strength of God) was observed on March 24 and Saint Raphael (Medicine of God) on October 24. Since then, all three of the Great Archangels have been celebrated together. Angels are pure, created spirits. The name angel means servant or messenger of God. Angels are celestial or heavenly beings, on a higher order than human beings. Angels have no bodies and do not depend on matter for their existence or activity. They are distinct from saints, which men

can become. Angels have intellect and will, and are immortal. They are a vast multitude, but each is an individual person. Archangels are one of the nine choirs of angels listed in the Bible. St. Michael is one of the principal angels; his name was the war-cry of the good angels in the battle fought in heaven against the enemy and his followers. Four times his name is recorded in Scripture: Daniel 10:13 The prince of the kingdom of Persia stood in my way for twenty-one days, until finally Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me. I left him there with the prince of the kingdom of Persia. Daniel 12:1 At that time there shall arise Michael, the great prince, guardian of your people; It shall be a time unsurpassed in distress since nations began until that time. At that time your people shall escape, everyone who is found written in the book. Jude 1:9 "The archangel Michael, when he argued with the devil in a dispute over the body of Moses, did not venture to pronounce a reviling judgment upon him but said, May the Lord rebuke you!. St. Jude alludes to an ancient Jewish tradition of a dispute between Michael and Satan over the body of Moses, an account of which is also found in the apocryphal book on the assumption of Moses (Origen, De Principiis III.2.2). St. Michael concealed the tomb of Moses; Satan, however, by disclosing it, tried to seduce the Jewish people to the sin of hero-worship. St. Michael also guards the body of Eve, according to the "Revelation of Moses" (Apocryphal Gospel). Revelation 12:7-9 "Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it." St. John speaks of the great conflict at the end of time, which reflects also the battle in heaven at the beginning of time. According to the Fathers of the Church there is often question of St. Michael in Scripture where his name is not mentioned. They speculate he was the cherub who stood at the gate of paradise, "to keep the way of the tree of life" (Genesis 3:24) (although this is sometimes referred to as the Archangel Uriel Light of God who is mentioned in other apocryphal writings), the angel through whom God published the Decalogue to his chosen people, the angel who stood in the way against Balaam (Numbers 22:22 sqq.), the angel who routed the army of Sennacherib (2 Kings 19:35).
Christian tradition gives to St. Michael four offices: To fight against Satan. To rescue the souls of the faithful from the power of the enemy, especially at the hour of death. To be the champion of God's people, the Jews in the Old Law, the Christians in the New Testament; therefore, he was the patron of the Church, and of the orders of knights during the Middle Ages. To call away from earth and bring men's souls to judgment.
Within the Hierarchy of Saints, the Blessed Virgin Mary always has the highest position, followed by St. Michael the Archangel - the Prince of Angels, because of his role in casting out Satan from heaven, then followed by the orders of angels, then St. John the Baptist and the saints. On October 13, 1884, Pope Leo XIII had a remarkable vision. The Pontiff had finished celebrating Mass; then, he suddenly stopped at the foot of the altar. He stood there for about 10 minutes, as if in a trance, his face ashen white. Then, going immediately from the Chapel to his office, he composed the Prayer to St. Michael, with instructions it be said everywhere. When asked what had happened, he explained that as he was about to leave the foot of the altar, he suddenly heard voices - two voices, one kind and gentle, the other guttural and harsh. They seemed to come from near the tabernacle. As he listened, he heard the following conversation: The guttural voice, the voice of Satan in his pride, boasted to Our Lord: "I can destroy your Church." The gentle voice of Our Lord: "You can? Then go ahead and do so." Satan: "To do so, I need more time and more power." Our Lord: "How much time? How much power?" Satan: "75 to 100 years, and a greater power over those who will give themselves over to my service." Our Lord: "You have the time, you will have the power. Do with them what you will."

who passed away on September 13, 2013. Our sympathies are extended to her daughter, Mary Beth Peterson, and to all of her family and friends.
Thanks to all who serve the Sick and Homebound of our parish for your wonderful service to those who bear the Cross of Christ in their sufferings and handicaps!
We are grateful for those who helped us to gather information this past spring to know who are serving as Ministers of Care to the Sick and Homebound. We still lack some information on those who are taking Holy Communion to those in need. So, if you have not given this information to us already (including family members who take communion home to their loved ones) we need it. The Bishop would like the names of all who serve as Eucharistic Ministers in Church and to the sick. Please include the following information: Your name Your address and phone number Name of Person you visit His/her address and phone number How long you have been taking communion to him/ her Could you please bring the information to the parish secretaries at the parish office who will give it to Father Tomy; he is coordinating our parish database. This will also help us if a Minister becomes sick and we need to find a substitute to take communion to your loved one/ sick/homebound you minister to. If youve previously contacted the parish office and your communion responsibilities havent changed, you do not have to contact the parish office again. Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.
We are ever grateful for your loving generosity and sharing in the Ministries of Serving the Lord here at St. John the Baptist.
