Flat Newton

TEKS:
(7.6) Science concepts. The student knows that there is a relationship between
force and motion.
A) Demonstrate basic relationships between force and motion using simple
machines including pulleys and levers.
B) Demonstrate that an object will remain at rest or move at a constant speed and
in a straight line if it is not being subjected to an unbalanced force.

Outcomes:
1. Students will use Flat Newton to create a scrapbook demonstrating how forces
cause motion.
2. Students will also use Flat Newton to demonstrate how input/output forces on
different simple machines.

Invitation:
1. Ask students if they have a scrapbook or have ever seen one?
2. What did that scrapbook show?
a. Pictures of important things
b. Descriptions, names, dates, etc.
3. You will be making a scrapbook demonstrating your understanding of physics.

c. Names of machines
d. Descriptions of forces, machines
4. We will be working on this over the next couple of weeks.

Materials:
• Decorated Flat Newton
• 3X5 cards for picture assignments
• Camera (student provided)
• Scrapbook (student provided) or folded book made from 4 pieces of 11X17 paper

Instructions:
1. After each concept on the picture assignment list is covered, have students write it
on a 3X5 card.
2. The 3X5 cards go home with the students, as picture assignments.
3. Students must include the rubric on the back page of their scrapbook.

Extra Credit:
• Include pictures and descriptions of the other simple machines: wheel and axle,
wedge, screw
