The

Mayor, Kota Kinabalu City Hall, Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu, No.1, Jalan Bandaran, 88675 Kota Kinabalu. 30th September 2013 Dear Sir, Request for a Roundtable Regarding Seashore Development Around the Kota Kinabalu City Hall Boundaries We are writing to you as a concerned citizens of Kota Kinabalu regarding several seashore development projects within the boundary of the Kota Kinabalu City Hall/Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (DBKK) area. While we understand that DBKK is not the lead agency undertaking these projects we are reaching out to you to organise a Roundtable where you could facilitate the engagement between our concerned parties and developers. The public is still unclear on the exact details and timelines of these kinds of projects the main one being the Tanjung Aru Eco Development (TAED). While we have keep abreast with news reports, we are failing to understand how the public will retain 50 percent of access following the development map published by the Daily express on the 16th of September 2013. This is due to a lack of detailed information provided regarding the development compounded with lack of public consultation. Currently, the Tanjung Aru beach is easily accessible to the public with no restrictions, questions such as access to beach, public right of way, and shoreline reserves are being asked. Have questions such as:- What will happen to the 2nd and 3rd beach, will members of the public continue to have access to those beaches? What happens to Prince Phillip Park? We understand it will be larger? Can someone show us the exact plans? Will it retain some of its historical features? Why reclamation and canal building? What will happen to the trees still at the areas of development, why they be cut down as the plan calls for canal building and reclaimation? Will the rugby field be replaced somewhere else within Tanjung Aru? Having to go to Likas is far for many who enjoy the field here. Why so many hotels? They are also five star hotels close by? Which is the correct plan? The development map provided by Daily Express is different from the 3D model? We understand need for sustainable development and believe that this State Government is sincere in balancing this with continued public access to all the

beach areas of Tanjung Aru as mentioned by the Chief Minister, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment and the Executive Director of TAED. But how exactly? We the members of the public are concerned and as such we are looking to you our local authority to organize this roundtable discussion so that these concerns will be addressed. We are also concerned about other seashore developments which have been spring up such as the Convention Centre adjacent to Sabah Ports and another new one we have found is the development on Sulug Island within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park which we understand is not under DBKKs purview but adjacent to DBKK jurisdiction. As such we humbly request such a Roundtable meeting with DBKK facilitating as the public areas are maintained by your agency and you also have experience dealing with the public. If this Roundtable is able to provide concrete information you could avoid wrong information being given to the public and mitigate the growing grassroots opposition against such development. While we represent people's concern we are very concerned that the right facts and information is put on the table. We hope you view this request favourably and will revert to us in a timely fashion and organise this roundtable meeting. Thank you. Yours faithfully, The undersigned.
