Presentation & Trunk Show October 4

Special Olympics Bocce a Washout

Due to the rain on Thursday and Friday before the scheduled Saturday Special Olympics Bocce Tournament at Oran Good Park in Farmers Branch on September 21, the tournament was postponed until Saturday, September 28. Our thanks go to the number of ICD members who volunteered for the event on the 21st and to those whose schedules allowed them to agree to participate on September 28. Watch ClubMail for details of the tournament after the 28th. Ben Parlapiano Chair, Charitable Outreach

As a child, Sandra Simonato Blei would run her fingers over the silver in her parents antique shop, learning about their textures and craftsmanship. Now she is a GIA-certified gemologist, running her familys well-known Milanbased antique and jewelry business. Her love of sophisticated metal-work and appreciation for nature, combined with her passion for gems and eye for design, make her creations the choice for busy women who want to move with ease and elegance between the events of everyday modern life. From work to errands to a night at the Gala, her distinctive jewelry is always eye-catching. No wonder New Yorks Museum of Art & Design and the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice carry her work! But you wont have to travel to New York, Milan, or Venice to meet Sandra, hear about her work, and have the opportunity to purchase a piece (or two, or three) ~ just come early to Cena on October 4! At 6:30 p.m. she will talk with ICD Members about her professional path and how she conceptualizes and creates her distinctive pieces. Then, while you are enjoying Cena, take some time to browse the pieces from her collection that will be on display in the Board Room. Youll get to visit with Sandra, enjoy a glass of complimentary prosecco ~ and maybe buy a piece of her art to wear home! ICD Members will enjoy special jewelry pricing for that night only. (Best of all, Sandra is a generous philanthropist, giving a large percentage of all profits from sales of her jewelry designs to cancer research.) Contact Mary Ann at culture@italianclubdallas.org with any questions and bring your gift list to Cena on October 4!

Hunger Busters Volunteers Start a New Season Then Answer a Call for Help
On Tuesday morning, September 3, the day after our ICD volunteers had started the new season working at Hunger Busters, an urgent call came from Marybeth Fickel of Hunger Busters asking if a crew of Italian Club volunteers could help at Hunger Busters the next day. The organization slated to work Wednesday had cancelled leaving Hunger Busters with no one to prepare the take home meals for the children they serve in the Dallas Independent School District. So the call went out and our volunteers responded. The meals were prepared, the children fed and the day was saved. All easier said than done of course. To drop everything and respond on such short notice is over and beyond the call of duty. Im reminded of latter day Minutemen and Minutewomen. Our heartfelt thanks go to Semira Pacifico, Fred and Elfriede Napurano and Charles and Carol Castellano for their immediate response to Marybeths call for help, and to all Hunger Buster volunteers. You are appreciated beyond measure. Ben Parlapiano Chair, Charitable Outreach

Member News
The Club famiglia sends deepest condolences to longtime Members and I Colori Italiani dancers and founders Andrew & Maria Chobany for the passing of his mother, Elfriede (Ellen) Dorothea Klug Chobany, on September 8 at the age of 87 in Bethlehem, PA. In her homeland of Germany, right after World War II, she met the love of her life U.S. Army Tech Sgt. Andrew Chobany of Portage, PA. They were married for 53 years until his death in 2008. Ellen was a tireless worker for her family and church and volunteered for many military and community organizations providing help for people in need, including the Officers Womens Club of Zweibrucken U.S. Army Base, St. Michaels Orthodox Church, the Church Sisterhood, the Portage Senior Center, and Meals On Wheels. Services were Friday, September 13 at St. Michaels Orthodox Church, 915 Blair Street, Portage, PA 15946, for which the family requested memorial donations in lieu of flowers.

There are 21 Presidential Libraries throughout the United States, and the newest is located right here in Dallas ~ the George W. Bush Presidential Center & Library. A group of 37 ICD Member participants and their guests spent a summer Saturday morning exploring the new, state-of-the-art facility. While waiting for our designated entrance time, we admired the display of diplomatic gifts given to President & Mrs. Bush as well as members of his Cabinet during his two terms in office. Then we were guided through the atrium with its stunning 3-D wrap-around video to the theater showing the museums intro film. After that, we were on our own during this self-paced morning. From seeing humorous films and mementos about Life in the White House to the very moving displays and video clips about 9/11 and its aftermath to having pictures taken while seated behind the identical replica of the Presidents Oval Office desk it was an event that made lasting memories for all who participated. The day was capped with lunch at Olivellas ~ Avera Pizza Napoletana, a tiny restaurant that the ICD group effectively took over. Plates were filled with pizza & panini, glasses were filled with wine, and the air was filled with the energy and laughter that can only be found after everyone shares a great experience together, brought to you by the Italian Club of Dallas! ~ Mary Ann Webster

Display Your Heritage

While Italians are forwardthinking innovators in many fields, they never lose sight of the road they and their ancestors have traveled, and they show pride in that heritage in countless ways ~ including through photographs. The Italian Club of Dallas and its Members are also proud of their immigrant history, so we have a Heritage Wall at the ICD Clubhouse. This wall is filled with vintage pictures provided by our Members. The most important requirement is that the photo be significant to the Member and his or her heritage. The photos are so dear that, when friends come to the Clubhouse, the pictures ~ and the stories of the persons in the frame ~ are proudly shared. Next time you are at the Club, take a look at our past. Are you a Member who has a picture that speaks to your immigrant experience that youd be proud to share? The Heritage Wall is a Club fundraising initiative, and donations are fully tax deductible. Contact culture@ItalianClubDallas.org for more information ~ and have your family be a part of the ICD familys Heritage Wall!

October Book Club News

The Book Club meets on Thursday, October 24 at 7 p.m. Well discuss Amalias Tale: A Poor Peasant, an Ambitious Attorney, and a Fight for Justice, by David Kertzer. The author, a professor of Italian studies at Brown University, specializes in expertly recovering long buried late nineteenth century Italian court dramas, and presenting their details in a highly readable fashion for Englishspeaking audiences. In Amalias Tale, he describes an epic David-versus-Goliath contest that rocked Italy in the 1890s, leading to street protests by peasant wet nurses and their supporters, and eventual reform of Italys antiquated system of caring for orphans. Italian cities typically sponsored an institution for the care of foundlings, and the institution met its responsibilities by contracting out the care of these orphan babies to poor peasant women willing to serve as wet-nurses. One such peasant from a village outside of Bologna, Amalia Bagnacavalli, contracted syphilis from wet-nursing a sickly baby placed in her care by the foundling institution of Bologna. The city rebuffed her when she sought medical care, but a crusading lawyer, Augusto Barbieri, sued Bologna on her behalf, pursuing her case for years through the Italian judicial labyrinth until she obtained justice, and launched the beginnings of an Italian workmans compensation system for compensating injured workers. The book can be ordered from Amazon by clicking this link http://tinyurl.com/m3ghodp

SALTIMBOCCA ALLA ROMANA

Saltimbocca, veal sauteed with prosciutto and sage, is a festive and easy supper. A classic of Roman cuisine, saltimbocca means jumps in the mouth. Although veal scallops are traditional, the dish also can be prepared with boneless slices of turkey breast or boneless chicken breasts. The pan may be de-glazed with stock alone or in combination with wine.

Directions

Ingredients

2 large veal scallops or uncooked boneless turkey breast slices (about 8 to 10 ounces total weight and each 1/3 inch thick, or 2 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves) Salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 fresh sage leaves 2 thin slices prosciutto 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 cup chicken stock reduced to 1/4 cup 1/4 cup dry Marsala, dry white wine, or additional stock 1 tablespoons unsalted butter

Pound the meat slightly between sheets of plastic wrap to a uniform thickness of 1/4-inch. Sprinkle lightly with salt and pepper and top each piece with 2 sage leaves. Cover the sage with the prosciutto slices. In a saut pan, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the meat, prosciutto and sage-side down, and saut until golden on the first side, about 3 minutes. Turn and cook the other side, about 3 minutes longer. Remove to a warmed plate and keep warm. Pour in the stock and the wine and de-glaze the pan over high heat, scraping up any brown bits stuck to the bottom. Boil until the pan juices reduce and are thickened. Remove the pan from the heat and swirl in the butter. Spoon over the saltimbocca and eat at once.

Fall into Fitness: Individualism at Its Healthy Best

Potentially we are all runners, just for the reason that the muscles of our legs are the most powerful of our body. Thats a simple fact that for too many is without a consequence. In recent history, people have become more static and dont walk enough because of dependency on motorized wheels for locomotion and on sedentary jobs for a living. Not surprisingly, a few weeks ago the American Medical Association declared obesity a disease as to confirm that unhealthy habits are spreading in our society like a pervasive malaise. Obesity affects millions of people who indulge too much and dont exercise. Today the word running is more a euphemism used for describing: someone who is running a vehicle faster while running late, people running to the mall to spend money, politicians who run for the money, those who eventually run from their spouse and others who keep running into all sorts of trouble. If all of them were actually involved in the dynamics of running or fast walking, then America would also be the world leader in health and fitness! Many people may think that running and walking are monotonous exercises and bar them out without knowing what giving up. They are giving up the chance of being healthier, less prone to sickness and to possibly live longer while enjoying a better quality of life. Others complain about being stressed out or depressed without taking the best and cheapest remedy available. Running and fast walking are very effective, no-cost stress relievers. They promote an immediate sense of well-being when performed with a convenient range of speed and intensity that increase cardiovascular, pulmonary and muscular capacity. These simple activities can make anyone fit and healthier by just being consistent while using a small amount of disposable time! The reason for regular physical activity can be for pleasure or for spirit of competition, but it can also be that you want to free yourself from a growing dependence, be it your car, TV or computer, or that you want to renew yourself after long hours of work. Perhaps most importantly, you do it to celebrate the chance of being alive and well and want to remain that way for as long as possible in total reliance of yourself and of your own strength. You do it to increase your level of energy because energy is indispensable for living an independent life, and life is motion. Only when moving at an accelerated pace and going far with passion and strength without help other than your legs, heart and lungs, you are truly celebrating life with freedom of body and spirit in their purest form. Of course you may have other preferences or none at all but, regardless of your age, my recommendation is to be physically active in any way you can and live determined to stay strong and healthy. There is an old say in Italian: Aiutati che Dio ti aiuta e la vita ti sorridera! which translates as: Help yourself that God helps you, then life will smile at you! Follow the wisdom of regularly engaging in basic fitness and, no matter how long you live, you will

live self-reliant and free, energized and well!
