Sorry to hear about the sudden passing

of former Port Clinton Fire Chief, John

Drummer. He worked for many years at
Clinton Auto Parts with my old friend
Jerry Lippus. While Fire Chief, the PC Fire
Department grew in skill and stature. He
will be missed.
nnn
What a tough night to choose what to
watch on TV! First, the Browns play the
Buffalo Bills on the NFL Network Chan-
nel while WGTE, Channel 30, will carry
the documentary produced by Catawba
Island resident Nick James on the Bi-
Centennial Celebration of Oliver Hazard
Perrys victory in the Battle of Lake Erie.
If you missed any of the festivities over La-
bor Day weekend, here is your chance to
see what you missed. This special program
will be aired at 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday,
October 3).
nnn

I received a call from old friend Luella
Terp, who worked for many years as the
clerk for Ottawa County Common Pleas
Judge Donald Wargowski. She called to
tell me that Judge Wargowski and his wife
Faith have come home from their retire-
ment place in Aiken, SC. They are now
residents at Edgewood Manor in Port
Clinton. Judge Wargowski introduced me
to Founders Day in Toussaint. One of my
frst assignments at WRWR in 1972 was
to cover the celebration of the founding
of Toussaint by French explorer Etienne
Brule in the 1600s. I think the Judge played
the accordion while everybody raised a
glass to salute the founding of Toussaint,
Carroll Township and Ottawa County.
The Celebration happens on Nov. 1st, All
Saints Day (Toussaint in French).
nnn

Molnar 50th Anniversary
Richard & Diane (Gill) Molnar were married Sept.
28, 1963, at St. John Lutheran Church, Port Clinton,
by the Late Rev. Harry S. Holzapfel.
Richard retired from Krogers in Port Clinton after
50 years of service. He also served on the Port Clin-
ton Fire Dept & EMS for many years. Diane worked
at Andys Party Mart for more than 20 years.
They have three children, Doug of Catawba Island,
Dawn (Kevin) Mulligan of Fremont, and Dickie
(Janae) of Port Clinton. They also have one Grand-
daughter, Courtney.
The children have planned a family dinner in hon-
or of their parents Golden Anniversary.
Cheerios in the Pew
Friday morning my wife and I were sitting on the couch
having a cup of coffee together before the kids woke up for
school. Just as we had settled into our seats Rachel checked
her phone for any messages. Thats when we found out
that John Drummer had passed away. Our hearts both
sank into the couch in disbelief.
On any given Sunday you could fnd the Drummer fam-
ily sitting in the pew awaiting the beginning of 10:30 a.m.
mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Port Clinton.
Rachel and I usually arrived a little after 10, with kids in
tow, and were always greeted by the warm smiles and kind
words of John and his family. John, a mountain of a man,
towered over our three little ones. If it were anyone else,
little Bert, Oliver, & Lorelei would have been scared to
death of someone with shoulders broad enough to make
an NFL linebacker look small and wiry, but John always
had a way with the kids that made them laugh and put
them at ease.As we would enter the pew he would hold out
his palm and ask the kids Did you bring me any Cheer-
ios? referring to the treats Rachel and I brought to help
keep the kids quiet in church. Every time, my kids would
laugh and smile as they playfully denied him their pre-
cious Cheerios.
Personally, I didnt know John outside of the Church. In
fact, my only interaction with him, in all the years I knew
him, was from sitting one row behind him at mass. Yet,
when I heard the news of his passing I was deeply affect-
ed and couldnt help but shed a tear. How did someone I
hardly knew have such a profound impact on my life? Can
only a few words of kindness once a week make that much
of an impression? Absolutely!
As I pondered Johns death I began to think how, all too
often, we fnd ourselves going about our daily routine and
pay little or no attention to those around us. Many times
we encounter people on a regular basis and show little or
no interest in them at all. We arent necessarily mean to
them but we may treat them with indifference. The ca-
shier at the store, the clerk at the bank, or even the guy you
walk past on the way into the offce in the morning, how
much of a difference could we make in their lives, and our
own, by sharing a warm smile and a welcoming hello? A
lot, I suspect. Just as much, if not more, as John Drummer
made in my life just by joking with my kids about sharing
their Cheerios in the pew. God bless you John!

Downtown Port Clinton
My wife and I have been part time residents since 1987.
Starting out in Blue Teal, next to Breezy Acres and for the
last 20 years on Catawba Island. After listening and read-
ing all your articles in the Beacon regarding Waterworks
Parks future I realize residents of Port Clinton want things
to stay the way they have been and make no changes.
Example: downtown badly needs sprucing up with
paint. Fix the sidewalks and even though the storefronts
are empty, decorate them to at least look friendly. The
town needs a hook, something to draw people to PC. The
tall ships brought the town alive, as with the Walleye Fes-
tival. The Islands do get the bulk of the business but with
an attraction such as a waterpark/Hotel or maybe even a
permanent ship of some type maybe visitors would stay
a little longer. Put some entertainment on the streets for
the children. Maybe traveling magicians, clowns, musi-
cians walking around. If none of these ideas fy we have
loved PC as our second home and continue to partake in
all summer events even if everything stays the same.
Thanks for listening.
R. Carleton,
Catawba Island
Waterworks Park
My wife and I own a unit at Waterfronts II condomini-
um and I spent all my youth summers on Ascher Beach.
As an attorney I have assisted developers of residential
condominiums, including the expandable type, where
the builder retains the option to discontinue completing
the project at any time if actual sales of initial units do
not justify or support constructing all the additional units
that had been projected.
From news accounts it appears the potential park de-
velopment includes residential condominiums, with con-
struction of all projected buildings admittedly dependent
on suffcient sales meaning of course there is no guar-
antee it will all ever be built.
One news story said the developer, when asked how the
city can be sure he will build it all, answered we will be
bonded. That no doubt refers to a payment/performance
bond for any individual structure being built at any point
in time, not that all the proposed buildings are guaranteed
by a bonding company to ever be built. If there is no bank
or group of developers who have in place and available all
the money needed to do the entire project, please dont do
anything, unless you are willing to say out loud we need
the cash so badly we dont have to be sure what will ever
happen with the land and we will risk the project failing
for lack of buyers.
Port Clinton could end up in the worst of all worlds: no
completed project, only just a part project; and no pub-
lic park-it is gone forever. If that happens, it will not be
proper for the city to then say, We had to do something.
Nothing in life is for sure, but a project being completed
only if sales support it is about as far from for sure as you
can get. Make them show you the moneyall of it, if
what ultimately will happen with the land is a critical part
of your decision to sell the park. If the driving force is re-
ally just to convert the park to money, then please say so.
Very truly yours,
Ronald J. Mayle

This weekend the perfect
early fall weather embraced
the Harvest Fest in Port
Clinton. The Kid Zone on
one end of the Madison
Street festival was lively
during the daytime hours
and the entertainment tent
on the other end came to
life in the afternoon and
evening.

Linda Sorg
BY JASMINE CUPP
The Lone Ranger, starring Johnny Depp
and Helena Bonham Carter, racked in 89
million dollars at the box offce this sum-
mer. To be part of that for Linda Karst
Stone was priceless. Linda, a member of
the Port Clinton Artists Club who now
resides in Texas, works in the art of scrim-
shaw. In the movie The Lone Ranger, Hele-
nas character Red Harrington has an ivory
leg. In February 2012 Linda Karst Stone
was chosen to create the prop for the mov-
ie. Linda practices the traditional method
of scrimshaw, working by hand and
not by machine. A steel instrument
is used to make lines or crosshatch-
ing into the surface, in this case ivory,
then the scratches are flled with black
India ink and the excess is cleaned
from the surface.
The design wraps all the way around the
leg. It takes a great deal of time, talent and
precision to create such a beautiful piece
of art. On July 3rd Linda and forty of her
friends and family attended the opening
of the Lone Ranger and got to see Lindas
work of art on the big screen.
Linda still comes to the Port Clinton
area to visit her parents, Dr. Thomas and
Barbara Karst. To learn more about Linda
Karst Stone or to see more of her work

Thursday, Sept. 27, the Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council
held the last art walk of the 2013 season. The art walk was themed
Lake Erie- Celebration of the Lake. Many people came out for the
last hurrah and are excited to see the art walk come back again
next season.

Leadership Ottawa County (LOC) will
meet with government offcials at the Ot-
tawa County Courthouse in Port Clinton
Oct. 9 to learn more about the countys
government structure and demographics.
LOC is a nine-month leadership devel-
opment program that brings young pro-
fessionals together the second Wednesday
of each month to learn about and explore
the diversity of Ottawa County and in-
crease personal leadership skills through
experiential training.
The 2013-2014 LOC class kicked off on
Sept. 11 by learning about agriculture, en-
vironment and the natural resources. At
the Ottawa National Wildlife Center Ot-
tawa National Wildlife Refuge manager
Doug Brewer talked about the refuge, the
variety of birds and animals that reside in
or migrate there, the relationship of wet-
land conservation and water quality and
birdings impact on the local economy.
Also at the refuge, the group heard from
Jamie Coleman, a community outreach
specialist with the Ottawa Sandusky Sen-
eca (OSS) Solid Waste Management Dis-
trict, about the agencys mission to foster
the reduction of solid waste by increasing
the recycling of such materials as glass,
metals and plastics.
LOC traveled to Moore Orchards to learn
about apple growing, packing and distri-
bution from owner Jim Moore, and then
enjoyed a hayride along the dikes of the
Moore Beef and Hay Farm, owned by John
and Connie Moore. A highlight of the ride
was watching a crop-dusting plane in ac-
tion up close and personal.
After a dinner featuring Ottawa County
products at the Agricultural Complex in
Oak Harbor, Sea Grant extension educator
Tory Gabriel explained the importance of
Lake Eries tourist and fshing industries to
the local economy, as well as threats such
as invasive species and algal bloom to the
lakes well-being. Becky Simpson, educa-
tion specialist with the Ottawa Soil and
Water Conservation District as well as a
member of LOC - concluded the evening
with information about its educational ac-
tivities and services for property owners.
Members of the 2013-14 LOC class and
their sponsors include:
Diane Ball, OSS Solid Waste District;
Kathy Berger, Terra State Community
College; Laurie Cleaver, Ottawa County
Transportation Agency; Kathy Dale, Dan-
bury Township; Steve Hall, First Energy;
Steve Lange, Ottawa County Sanitary;
Dawn Segaard, Ottawa County Board of
Developmental Disabilities; Vern Shep-
herd, Lakeside United Methodist Church;
Amy Simkus, Stein Hospice; Becky Simp-
son, Ottawa Soil and Water Conserva-
tion District; Kristen Trammel, Otterbein
North Shore; Andrew Wells, Kroger.

month leadership development program

The last of the tomatoes have been har-
vested from home gardens, the pumpkins
and squash are nearly done and fall garden
clean-up has begun. It is time for compost-
ing garden waste or hauling it to a commu-
nity garden waste and leaf collection site.
Bare soil sits exposed to the elements for
most of the late fall, winter and early spring
across Ottawa County, subject to the same
erosion and run-off that commercial farm-
ers combat.
This year the Ottawa Soil and Water Con-
servation District has assistance for the
home gardener, just as they provided cost-
share assistance to 16 farmers for apply-
ing cover crops to land within the Portage
River watershed in Ottawa County. The
SWCD was awarded the grant through the
Great Lakes Basin Program for Soil Erosion
and Sediment Control to help reduce the
phosphorus fow into Lake Erie. Phospho-
rus is a major contributor to the toxic algae
bloom that poses a serious health hazard to
people and animals and negatively impacts
the fshery and economy of the area.
Sowing cereal rye by airplane is a cost-
effective method for farmers to lay down a
cover crop. Other cover crops that are be-
ing used are oil seed radishes and Austrian
peas. Farmers kill off the cover crop in the
spring by spraying with an herbicide or
rolling and smashing the vegetation. Over
the winter the cover crops have held the soil
in place, have kept weeds at bay, have pro-
vided nutrients and nitrogen for the soil,
have added organic material to the soil and
have signifcantly reduced runoff of phos-
phorus and other chemicals. The farmer
can then sow spring crops over the cover
crops, maintaining the soil and nutrients
and preserving the benefts of no-till farm-
ing.
Mike Libben and Becky Simpson of the
Ottawa SWCD are encouraging home gar-
deners to implement the same techniques
by sowing cover crops. The seed can be
sewn in the home garden by broadcasting it
by hand or by lightly tilling it into the soil.
In the spring, the cover crop can be tilled
under, cut down or smashed and rolled.
Give your garden the gift of a winter coat.
It will reward you with richer, looser soil,
fewer weeds and less run-off, and Lake Erie
will thank you, too.
Ottawa SWCD is making available pack-
ets of cover crops at no charge to the home
gardener. For more information or for your
free seeds, contact Libben or Simpson at
Ottawa SWCD, at 419 898-1595.

If a $1,320,000 proposal to the Ohio Department Servic-
es Agency, Homeless Crisis Response Program, is funded,
556 households in Wood, Sandusky, Ottawa, and Seneca
counties will receive homelessness prevention assistance
for the next two years.
The Board of Directors of the WSOS Community Ac-
tion approved submitting the proposal along with two
other new proposals.
The housing proposal, which is a partnership with Ot-
tawa County Transitional Housing, will serve 278 house-
holds with homelessness prevention and another 278 in
the Rapid Re-Housing category. It will provide rental/
utility assistance and deposits, hotel/motel vouchers, and
housing search and placement assistance.
The board also approved WSOS staff to submit a pro-
posal for $240,816 to the Great Lakes Commission and
Natural Resource Conservation Service that will be used
for the implementation of two additional Clary In-Stream
Sediment Collectors. These collectors will reduce sedi-
ment impacts to stream habitat and ultimately Lake Erie.
The board also approved a policy that formalizes a pro-
cess for low-income residents to have input in housing
development in their areas. Residents will be able to ad-
vise the organization in all of its decisions regarding the
design, choosing of a site, development and management
of all HOME-assisted or HOME-eligible affordable hous-
ing development.

The Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge held its sixth an-
nual Cars for Critters event on Sunday, Sept. 29. Well over
150 cars participated in the show. Participants in the show
were asked to vote for their favorite cars in the Cars of
Critters event. Some of the categories included best bird,
best mammal, best fsh, best insect, best reptile and best
plumage. The registration fees and all other money raised
went to beneft wildlife rehab, wildlife rescue and environ-
mental education.
Eddy Pausch, Assistant Refuge Manager at the Ottawa
National Wildlife Refuge, said that he was happy with the
turnout even though the weather was an issue. People
came from as far as Auburn, IN, from the west and Madi-
son, OH, from the east. We are happy with the turnout,
Pausch said. In addition to the car show, Back to the Wild
was also in attendance with their education animals. Owls,
eagles, hawks, snakes and even butterfies were there for
people to see up close. The event also included hay rides, a
raffe, door prizes, t-shirts and food from Blackberry Cor-
ner.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources
(ODNR) Offce of Coastal Management is accepting
applications for two different grant programs that
seek to protect and restore Lake Erie and the water-
shed.
Applications for the nationally competitive Coastal
and Estuarine Land Conservation Program (CELCP)
grants are due by 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25. Applica-
tions for the state-competitive Coastal Management
Assistance Grant funds are due by 5 p.m. on Friday,
Nov. 15. Both grants require applicants to provide at
least 50 percent of the projects total funding.
Communities within Ohios Lake Erie watershed
interested in acquiring land for preservation and pas-
sive recreation may apply for a CELCP grant of up to
$1 million per project. The land acquisitions and/or
conservation easements must be acquired from will-
ing sellers by a non-federal public entity (state, local
or regional unit of government) and then preserved
in perpetuity for conservation purposes.
Ohio will nominate up to two CELCP projects and
submit them to the National Oceanic and Atmo-
spheric Administration (NOAA) for consideration
and funding. CELCP was established by NOAA in
2002 to protect coastal and estuarine lands that are
considered important for their ecological, conserva-
tion, recreational, historical or aesthetic values. Ap-
plication sites will be prioritized based on NOAA
characteristics and proximity to Lake Erie.
NOAA ranks CELCP applications received from
each U.S. coastal state and territory nationally and
makes recommendations to Congress for funding,
which is anticipated to be available in 2014. Since
CELCP began, Ohio has secured more than $20 mil-
lion for 22 projects that leveraged more than $31.5
million local dollars to acquire and conserve more
than 3,480 acres.
More than $100,000 is available through the Coastal
Management Assistance Grants Program to commu-
nities, local governments, nonproft organizations,
state agencies, planning commissions and education-
al institutions. Funding priorities include watershed
planning to address coastal non-point pollution, bal-
anced growth and near-shore habitat improvement in
Lake Erie. Winners of the competitive grants will be
announced in the spring of 2014.
Applications and guidelines for both grants can be
found at www.LakeErie.ohiodnr.com/Grants or by
contacting the Offce of Coastal Management at 419-
626-7980. Potential applicants can learn about these
grant programs and several others available during
the grant workshops to be held Tuesday, Oct. 8, 1-4
p.m. at the Ottawa County Courthouse Emergency
Operations Center (basement), 315 Madison Street,
Port Clinton. To register for the workshops, RSVP by
Friday, Oct. 4, to Yetty Alley at yetty.alley@dnr.state.
oh.us or 419-626-7986.
The Offce of Coastal Management annually dedi-
cates a portion of its federal NOAA funding to the
Coastal Management Assistance Grants program.
More than $3.5 million in Coastal Management As-
sistance Grants has been awarded since the Ohio
Coastal Management Program was federally ap-
proved in 1997. A list of all previous grant awards is
available on the grants website.

Oak Harbor High School Principal Keith
Thorbahn would like to invite and wel-
come any parent/guardian of a student in
grades 812 to a start-up meeting for the
Oak Harbor High School Parent Group.
The meeting took place on Sept. 30, in
the media center at the high school.
The goal of the OHHS Parent group
is to increase and improve communica-
tions between the home and school, and
to provide parents the opportunity to
provide input. Engaging parents through
this group is part of the effort to continu-
ously improve Oak Harbor High School
by supporting all students to meet high
expectations, and to ultimately prepare
students for the challenges of college, ca-
reers, and citizenship.
For more information, please contact
Mr. Thorbahn at 419-898-6216.
Students at Immaculate
Conception School have
thought long and hard about
the importance of peace this
month. The students were
able to spend Sept. 10th at
Perrys Victory and Interna-
tional Peace Memorial and
truly spend some time re-
fecting and giving thanks
for the gift of Peace. So it is
only ftting that the students
celebrate Sept. 21st , Interna-
tional Day of Peace, or as it
is sometimes referred, World
Peace Day. Sept. 21st is dedi-
cated to world peace, the end
to war, and an end to violence
of any sort.
The day was frst celebrated in
1982. Mrs. Jacki Brown teaches reli-
gion to grades three, four, and fve
at Immaculate Conception School.
Her classes spent some time on Fri-
day refecting and praying for an end
to violence in our communities, our
country, and our world. The classes
created pin wheels for peace. The
pinwheel has become a symbol for
people across the world of the desire
for world peace. The brightly col-
ored pinwheels all displayed words
of peace and love.
The Ida Rupp Public Library is happy to
announce a new series of classes on Ado-
be Photoshop Elements 11 this fall. Pho-
toshop Elements is the most popular of
all the photo editing software programs
available to the photographic enthusiast
today, says Bill Gordon, the instructor
for the new classes. This program is the
best way to elevate your photography to
the next level, he adds.
Mr. Gordon received a bachelor of fne
arts degree from Brooks Institute of Pho-
tography in Santa Barbara, CA, and has
been a professional photographer for
over 30 years. He has taken many class-
es and attended numerous seminars on
Photoshop in addition to working with
the program on a daily basis for 14 years.
He and his wife Mary own Photomaker
Studios in Port Clinton.
Photoshop is a big, complicated and
expensive program that can be very in-
timidating to the new user, says Gordon.
Thats where Photoshop Elements really
shines. Its user friendly, contains 95%
of the features of full Photoshop and is
much less expensive. In my humble opin-
ion, the best way to start learning about
Photoshop Elements is to attend this se-
ries of free classes at the new, state-of-the-
art computer classroom at the Ida Rupp
Public Library.
Three classes will be offered, progress-
ing in diffculty and expertise from in-
troductory to more advanced. Photoshop
Elements-1, the beginning class, will
cover basic procedures, such as moving
images from the camera to the computer
and organizing images in Elements. The
class will also include instruction on us-
ing the instant fx function to greatly
improve your pictures quickly. Photo-
shop Elements-2 will cover the 26 guid-
ed edits that teach you how to do things
like adjust the contrast, brightness, color
and cropping of your images. Photoshop
Elements-3 will be for more advanced
users, preferably for those who have at-
tended Classes 1 and 2. In this class you
will learn to use some of the wonderful
tools that are available to you in Ele-
ments so that you can remove unwanted
items from your pictures, merge multiple
images together to create a high dynamic
range (HDR) image and other exciting
tasks.
The Photoshop Elements-1 class will be
held on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 6 p.m. The
Photoshop Elements-2 class will be on
Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 6 p.m. The Photo-
shop Elements-3 class to be announced.
Please call the library at 419-732-3212 to
register for a class or come by and sign up
at the main desk.

Lake Erie is a powerful inspiration for
artists and those doing some exceptional
work are represented by Desdemonas Art
Gallery in Marblehead. We often hear new
customers exclaim,You have such beauti-
ful things!, said Laura Brown Egan, who
co-owns the gallery with her daughter,
Bailey VanKirk. The artists, who excel as
oil painters, opened the gallery16 months
ago with a dozen local artists.
We now have 32 local artists consign-
ing their work with us, said Brown Egan.
Weve worked hard to accept only the best
work available in the Lake Erie Island Re-
gion, and were thrilled with the success
weve enjoyed.
Both owners can be found painting in
the shops studio when they are not busy
with clients or arranging the constantly-
changing displays as artists bring in new
pieces.
Were open through the holidays, and
then well take off January and February to
recharge, says VanKirk, This time of year
weekdays can be pretty quiet, but we dont

late 80s and moved to Marblehead, he bought a van and
started a contracting business. There had been a massive
freeze that winter, and there were lots of repairs to be done
in the spring. I knew in my gut it would work,
with hard work and good luck and good people
around me, said Starcher.
Some of that good luck came in 1996 when
Ben Richmond sold Starcher the building at
their current location. The building had been
neglected, so Starcher rehabilitated the historic
building and located his growing contracting
business there. I had no intention of going into
retail hardware business. We needed supplies for
our business and people were coming in and
wanting to buy things from us. We decided we
should probably start a hardware store, said
Starcher.
Starcher bought out the inventory of a hard-
ware store that was closing, and set out to make
the store a throw-back to the old mom and pop
hardware store, a service to the community and
source of employment for the area that was not
tourist dependent. I think we all have a respon-
sibility to do what we can for our community,
he believes. It is the rent we pay for the space
we occupy.
Starcher Enterprises provided the labor to
build the concession stand at Biro Field, volun-
teer with youth sports and mentoring youth. Starcher is
president pro-temps of Marblehead Village Council and
announcer for the Lakers home games. Retail manager Joe
Gast donated his time to hang all the new banners in the
village. The Starcher team is also very active with the Bish-
off Memorial Scholarship Fund that has donated $20,000
in scholarships for Danbury students.

BUSINESS
The Beacon
The so-called experts
are simply misinformed!
Newspapers are dead?
Over the last 15 years, since the proliferations of the internet, paid circulation
newspapers have seen their subscriptions drop dramatically, up to 8% per year. That
is why you hear Newspapers are dead. Thats the bad news. The good news is
FREE community papers, like The Beacon, have had ZERO reduction in circulation
and readership! Our latest audit shows that nearly 80% of the households who get
The Beacon READ The Beacon. PLUS The Beacon is read by over 2 individuals per
household. So, while the daily papers have suffered, the FREE communities weeklies
like The Beacon have thrived. And better yet The Beacons Web Site just gets better
and better, updated every day with new community news items. The Beacon was
Hyper-Local before the term was coined!
So, when you hear Newspapers are dead ... dont believe it! Community papers are
alive and well, thank you! And our Web Sites are great as well because we dont have
to worry about losing readership to our own Web Site. All you have to do is sit back
and read your weekly Beacon and stay informed about the good news happening
every day.

For my business, Bayside Comfort,
we choose to advertise with The
Beacon! Here at Bayside Comfort
we see the results from advertising
in The Beacon, and we continue to
do business with The Beacon for this
reason. As a local business Bayside
Comfort has been operating for over
23 years, and we know advertising is
an important part of getting services
to our great customers who need
them. The Beacon helps us do just
that!

For a while, it looked like the Port Clinton
Redskins might be on the way to their frst
victory of the season.
Holding a 12-point lead midway thru the
second quarter, Port Clinton was in the
drivers seat before Margaretta scored the
next 23 points to defeat the Skins, 30-19,
on Friday. Port Clinton got on the board
frst, taking a 7-0 lead on the second play
from scrimmage when quarterback Bran-
don Moore raced 84 yards for a touch-
down. Moore eluded several Margaretta
defenders before racing down the sidelines
for the score. The Polar Bears responded,
scoring on the ensuing drive when running
back Derek Abbot took a pitch and raced
52 yards for a touchdown on fourth down
to tie it at 7. The Skins next touchdown
was set up by a Cal Laurel interception of
Margaretta quarterback Dylan Bailey that
gave Port Clinton possession at the Polar
Bear 39-yard-line. Two plays later, running
back Keegan Lowe scored on a 34-yard run
to push the lead to 13-7 and, after the Red-
skin defense was able to force Margaretta to
turn it over on downs at the Margaretta 44
on the ensuing possession, Lowe scored on
a 12-yard run to push the
lead to 19-7 before the Polar
Bears mounted their come-
back.
For Port Clinton head
coach Beau Carmon, it
was the missed opportuni-
ties that ultimately cost his
team.
We were in the red zone
three times (after leading
19-7) and we were unable to
score points from that point
on, he said. Those are im-
portant opportunities. We
havent been able to fnish
a game offensively. Weve
been ahead at halftime of
two games and weve only
scored two touchdowns in
the second half.

A big play early can often swing momentum in one
teams favor, and thats just what happened in Oak Har-
bors 42-21 victory over Edison on Friday night in San-
dusky Bay Conference action at Rocket Stadium.
On the games second play from scrimmage, Edison
quarterback Chris Smith raced 59 yards down the sideline
before being knocked out of bounds by Rocket safety Cole
Weirich at the Oak Harbor 4-yard-line. Then, on frst-
and-goal, Oak Harbor linebacker Cobi Brough forced a
fumble that was recovered by Jourdan Maguire and sud-
denly the Rockets had dodged a bullet and seized momen-
tum.
Early in the second quarter, Genzman scored from seven
yards out to push the lead to 6-0 and Maguire, who con-
verted on all six of his extra-point attempts, connected on
the PAT to make it a seven-point lead.
The key play of the drive came on third-and-5 from the
Edison 17 when Weirich rolled right and pitched the ball
to Andrew Heberling on a reverse that netted 10 yards and
set the Rockets up with a frst-and-goal at the 7. On the
drive, Weirich carried it three times for 42 yards.
Edisons ensuing drive stalled and Heberling returned
the punt 24 yards to the Oak Harbor 48 to give the Rock-
ets good feld position. Oak Harbor proceeded to drive 52
yards in nine plays, scoring on a 4-yard run by Weirich to
make it 14-0. Genzman had two key runs, converting two
third downs to help move the chains.
A 48-yard run by Genzman on the Rockets next drive
help set up Brough, who scored on a two-yard run up the
middle to push the lead to 21 with 8:45 remaining in the
third quarter. The Chargers were unable to get within 14
points the rest of the contest.
For the game, Genzman fnished with 26 carries for 190
yards and two scores and also threw a 44-yard touchdown
pass. Weirich carried it 18 times for 123 yards and two
touchdowns and was 2-of-3 passing for 10 yards. Heber-
ling had a nice game as well, rushing four times for 66
yards and Brough had fve carries for 26 yards and a key
touchdown in the third quarter. As a team, the Rockets
carried it 59 times for 423 yards.
Every game, it starts with our offensive line, Genzman
said. It starts with our offensive line, the tight end, full-
back and wide receivers. I dont touch the ball until theyre
three yards downfeld, and I have faith that they can open
up holes for me. They helped tremendously tonight.
Anytime you get a win in the SBC, its a big deal, said
Oak Harbor head coach Mike May. We were able to limit
Edisons big plays on defense and established the run. Give
Edisons kids credit for fghting to the end.
May also talked about the job his offensive line did in
helping to open up running lanes for the backs.
Our offensive line is starting to gel, he said. I think the
key was the guys up front. Cole can take it to the house on
any play and Ben is our hammer inside. And Kalob Var-
gas and Andrew Heberling did a nice job flling in to give
some of our running backs
a break.
Late in the third quarter,
Smith, who also plays safety,
picked up a fumble for the
Chargers and ran it back
49 yards to get within 21-7,
giving Edison new life.
However, Oak Harbor
responded to go up 28-7,
scoring on the frst play of
the fourth quarter when
Genzman hit tight end Cliff
Biggert for a 44-yard touch-
down on a halfback pass on
third-and-11.
Edison was able to get
within 35-21 and recovered
an onside kick, driving to
the Rocket 41 before Keegan
Halls pass was intercepted
by Maguire with 2:30 to
play, effectively ending the
game.
For Edison, which fell to
2-3 overall and 0-2 in the
SBC, Smith carried it eight
times for 111 yards and
score, but was just 1-of-6
passing for fve yards and an
interception. Fullback Aus-
tin Utter had 11 carries for
51 yards and Luke Hagel-
berger fnished with four
carries for 36 yards.
Oak Harbor defeats Edison, improves to 3-2

We cant rely on the defense to win
football games. Theyre playing well and
theyre getting better. When the offense
shuts down in the second half, that puts
our defense in a tough situation. I dont
think were able, mentally and physically,
to make a comeback right now.
With the win, the Polar Bears improved
to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Sandusky Bay
Conference. Port Clinton, meanwhile, fell
to 0-5 and 0-2 in the SBC.
Margaretta scored its second touchdown
in the second quarter on a 10-yard run by
Abbott that fnished off an eight-play, 61-
yard drive. The key play came when Bailey
hit Stephen Freeh for 22 yards to move the
ball to the Port Clinton 12.
Abbott later scored on a 19-yard-run in
the third quarter that gave the Polar Bears
the lead for good at 22-19. Quarterback
Dylan Bailey later scored on a three-yard
run to account for the last score.
Moore led the team with 275 all-purpose
yards, 125 coming on the ground. He com-
pleted 9-of-19 passes for 150 yards and
Lowe fnished with 10 carries for 98 yards
and two scores. Emerson Lowe caught two
passes for 41 yards.
Keegan Lowe had a good game, Car-
mon said. Brandon had a good game.
Our offensive line was able to make some
holes for our guys. We had over 250 yards
of rushing and 400 yards of offense.
The Skins got good news this week when
sophomore receivers Nathan Stubblefeld
and Aidan Rospert were cleared for action
after suffering injuries earlier in the season.
(Stubblefeld) is a huge part of our of-
fense, Carmon said. We cant be a one-
dimensional offense, we need other guys
to make plays, especially our offensive line.
Were slowly turning the offense into what
I want us to be, a multi-dimensional team.
Weve tried to put an emphasis on running
the football. Were trying to stay balanced.
This Friday, Port Clinton host St. Mary
CC, which is 1-4 and 0-2 in the SBC.
Carmon is impressed with what hes seen
of the Panthers on flm.
Their skill kids can go with anyone in
the league, he said. The quarterback does
a real good job and they have some nice
receivers. I think theyre well coached.
To play with Clyde the way they did,
nobody expected that. They were able to
move the ball up and down the feld and
score touchdowns. Theyre a sound foot-
ball team and theyre able to do things, es-
pecially offensively.
BY YANEEK SMITH
Facing one of the best teams in the con-
ference was a wake-up call for the Dan-
bury Lakers.
The Edon Bombers, one of the top teams
in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference,
defeated Danbury, 47-7, last Friday, drop-
ping the Lakers to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in
the league.
Edon (3-2, 1-1 TAAC) took control from
the outset, scoring two touchdowns in the
frst quarter and three in the second quar-
ter to take a 34-0 lead into the half. Jimmy
Chamberlain had the lone touchdown for
the Lakers.
It was 34-0 at halftime, Danbury head
coach Bryan Dudash said. We could not
get anything going; they dominated us up
front. I thought we might have a problem
with them defensively because they have
so many athletes. They had three good re-
ceivers and a quarterback that can run and
throw.
Theyre well coached and were ranked
preseason No. 12 in the state. Theyve got a
good team and I think theyre going to run
the table. I think theyll go 8-2 and make
the playoffs.
This Friday, the Lakers face the Toledo
Christian Eagles. TC is currently 3-2 over-
all and 2-0 in the TAAC and has won two
games in a row. Offensively, they utilize the
spread offense and have a good quarter-
back in Brett Freeman.
TC is a lot like us, Dudash said. We feel
pretty good going into the game. We match
up physically. Freeman is probably one of
the best quarterbacks league. We feel really
confdent that if we can play well, we can
compete. We just have to have confdence
in ourselves.
Danbury falls to Edon,
drops to 2-3 on the year

mind. It gives us time to catch up on our commis-

The focus of the gallery is to showcase art celebrating
Lake Erie. A wide variety of depictions of local land-
marks is offered in oils, watercolor and photographic
prints. The beloved Lake Erie sheepshead is represent-
ed by Beth Akins Lucky Stone jewelry. Denise Gallup
creates earrings and pendants with beach glass.
The stable of woodworkers at Desdemonas has
grown to include eight talented craftsmen. Lake Erie
driftwood is the medium for Teri Gannons mobiles
and John Brabanders vases and lamps. The lathe is
the magic tool for Alex Matyuss lovely candle holders
and for Ralph Oxleys gorgeous bowls. Terry Overmyer
works in intarsia, (inlaid wood images), as well as using
driftwood and beach stones to construct artful bird-
houses.
Nautical tables and shelves that look like lap-strake
boats are Greg Boltzs specialty. Greg Funk also does
furniture, repurposing teak swim platforms and hatch
covers into unique tables. Paul Wilford completes the
group with graceful, hand carved seabirds.
Weve started carrying a few books of local interest
and would like to have more next season, says Brown
Egan. We began with my husband DArcys vintage
Guide to Ohio Fishing then added Tom Koroknays
great book on Lyman boats. In August Leslie Korenko
joined in with her four volume set on the history of
Kelleys Island.
Desdemonas is open every day except Tuesday. It is
located in the same plaza as Allure Printing and the Ca-
noe Club at Buck Road on Route 163.
