The Challenges
BRI has a large and growing automated teller machine (ATM) network that now includes 1400 machines around Indonesia. With a growing number of ATMs across the Indonesian archipelago, BRIs requirements for ATMs differ from the requirements for desktop PCs. ATMs are unattended, customer-facing devices that operate 24 hours a day and must maintain the highest levels of availability and security. Starting in 1999, BRI deployed a small number of ATMs. They were stand-alone units, and remote access wasnt an option. Every time a problem occurred, a technician was dispatched to troubleshoot of reinstall the software whenever problems were reported. This was an expensive and time-consuming process. BRI wanted a way to centrally manage their ATMs, in order to drive down the time and cost of ATM management.
The Solution
Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) has accumulated over more than 100 years of experience in serving the microbanking needs of the people from the Indonesian villages, towns and cities. To deliver its services that are scattered across the vast Indonesian archipelago, BRI turned to Symstream to manage its growing ATMs fleet. With Symstream, BRI has been able to streamline its back-office, build its nationwide ATM infrastructure and accommodate changing business requirements easily and rapidly. Symstream helped BRI to give its ATM network the levels of centralized security and manageability it sought.
Solution:
Symstream enables centralized, remote management and reporting capability so that IT administrators can examine and review security configurations from a central point. With the heartbeat monitoring tool, administrators will have full and real-time visibility of network performance parameters such as GSM signal strength, average data Bit-Error-Rate (BER), average transaction time, event success-rate as well as network balancing and monitoring. There is also a 24-hour Helpdesk in case the problem cannot be solved right away. Symstreams monitoring system also allows BRI to keep track of the number of transactions made over each individual terminal. This enables BRI to quickly detect underutilization, and ATMs that generate very little revenues can be quickly redeployed to other locations with more cash-dispensing crowds.
The Symstream solution allows us to place or move an ATM to another location without disrupting communications. It is easy to add ATMs to our network and going wireless means that our installation and operating costs are much lower
said Abing Rabani, IT planning and Strategic Development Manager, BRI The Symstream solution also enables BRI to deploy ATMs anywhere there is GSM coverage. BRI can have a new ATM up and running on an off-site premise within just a day or two instead of two to three weeks. Bank customers always look for the nearest
ATM to withdraw cash and manage their accounts via non-cash ATMs. With Symstream technology, ATMs can be quickly made available in new offpremise locations such as shopping malls and entertainment centers where traffic is soaring. Faster lead time is the biggest benefit that BRI has reaped from using Symstreams solution added
Rabani.
Benefits
Fast deployment and Wider Coverage - Lesser dependency on an existing fixed infrastructure for fleet deployment Secure connection non-shared connection, unlike other wireless technologies Business efficiency cut overall communication cost up to 30% Easy Fleet monitoring - Faster information in fleet operation status, quicker response to irregularities
