ARTIST: Terry Clarke

CD TITLE: Its About Time LABEL: Bluemusicgroup.com ORDER CD: Bluemusicgroup.com BUY on iTUNES: Award Winning Jazz Drummer Celebrates A Milestone With New Recording Nov 21, 2009 Tien Providence Drummer Terry Clarke, One of Canadas most celebrated and recorded jazzmen commemorates fifty years in the music with his debut as a leader. It may be surprising to many jazz fans that Terry Clarke has just released his debut album. One can be forgiven for thinking he has done one before; after all there is over four hundred recordings on which you can find his name.

Terry Clarke may have been contented to just be the drummer in the band, but for many years his talent has been recognized and celebrated. He has been honoured as Drummer Of The Year for six consecutive years (2000-2008) at National Jazz Awards. Many of the recordings he has worked on were nominated for music awards in Canada and The US and many won in the category they were nominated in. He was recently named as a Member Of The Order Of Canada, Canadas highest civilian honour. ________________________________________________________________________________ ARTIST: Dafnis Prieto CD TITLE: Taking the Soul For A Walk Label: Dafnison Music Order CD: http://www.dafnisprieto.com Buy on iTUNES: With the release of Taking the Soul For A Walk, Cuban-born Dafnis Prieto, recognized by his elders and peers as a singular force on the drums since he arrived in New York in 1999, brings his already luminous career to another level. For one thing, his third album is exceptionally cohesive and varied, featuring a suite of original compositions performed by a like-minded group of outstanding musicians. Saxophonists Yosvany Terry and Peter Apfelbaum, trumpeter Avishai Cohen, pianist Manuel Valera, and bassist Yunior Terry are all exemplary team players and, like Prieto, expert at crafting musical narrative from pan-American source material. For another, the band leader and composer on the much acclaimed Zoho releases About the Monks (2005) and Absolute Quintet (2006), takes control of the means of production, launching his own label, Dafnison Music. Extending his previous quintets to a sextet, Prieto gives himself a larger canvas and palette for his compositional strokes and penchant for beautiful counterpoint melodies over a multitude of polyrhythms. He wrote seven of the twelve pieces in response to a 2005 commission from Chamber Music America and titled them The Emotion Series. For Dafnis Prieto, Taking The Soul For a Walk represents a significant step towards seizing more control of his artistic life. I have a lot of music that I want to put out music for dance, for film, and other projects, he says. I no longer want to ask permission to release it from other people who might be interested. I am trying to represent in my music what I am living now and I want the music to sound the way I walk, the way I breathe, the way all of us are living today with all the emotions, all the questions and answers that we have. ________________________________________________________________________________

ARTIST: Dave Young

The orchestra (led by drummer/arranger Dennis Mackrel) is performing LIVE to vocal tracks drawn from Sinatras long, distinguished recording career. Vocalist Dee Daniels (also LIVE) adds her unique voice to the performance. The show has already received rave reviews, and will be touring major U.S. and Canadian cities prior to what promises to be a long run on The Great White Way. ________________________________________________________________________________ Artist: Joe Coughlin CD: Lowdown West Broadway Label: Self Produced Website: http://www.joecoughlinjazz.com CD INFO Joe Coughlins new live CD recorded at the Cellar Jazz Club in Vancouver, BC, with one of the most swinging trios around featuring Miles Black on piano, multiple National Jazz Award-winning bassist Jodi Proznick, and drummer Dave Robbins is a winner. Lowdown West Broadway is full of gems -- familiar and recognisable favourites from the Great American Songbook such as My Foolish Heart, On Green Dolphin Street, But Beautiful and Well Be Together Again sitting comfortably alongside rare and lesser known gems like My Last Affair, Baby Dont You Quit Now, Robbins Nest and I Love Being Here With You -- evidence of Joes claim to be a proud specialist in lost love songs for the supper club set. Also clear proof you can be laid-back and hard-swinging at one and the same time. Its some trick -- but thats Joe.

Joe Coughlin is the winner of the 2008 and the 2009 National Jazz Award for Male Vocalist of the Year. ________________________________________________________________________________

ARTIST: Triodes

CD TITLE: Chunked LABEL: Modica Music ORDER CD: CDbaby

Triodes is a genre-jumping instrumental group that traces it roots to the upbeat instrumental r&b, soul, and funk of groups such as Booker T and the MGs, The Meters, and Herbie Hancocks Headhunters, but with generous nods to early reggae and ska, modern jam bands, experimental rock, jazz, and electronica. With a repertoire that puts an emphasis on solid grooves and an intriguing palette of sounds, the fun and funk of Triodes is delivered by Michael Occhipinti (guitar), Paul Neufeld (keyboards), Roberto Occhipinti (bass/producer), and Doan Pham (drums), with guests Jeff Coffin (saxophonist with Bela Fleck and The Flecktones & The Dave Matthews Band), rapper PHATT al, and percussionist Luis Orbegoso. Formed as a spin off of their JUNO Award winning jazz ensemble NOJO (Neufeld-Occhpinti Jazz Orchestra), Triodes co-leaders Paul Neufeld and Michael Occhipinti have been collaborating on projects since they met at Torontos York University in 1988. NOJO won a JUNO for its 1995 debut CD and each of the groups four subsequent releases has yielded a JUNO nomination, including two recordings with brilliant clarinetist Don Byon and one with sax legend Sam Rivers. While NOJO is a group dedicated to exploring fresh, original jazz written for a large ensemble, Triodes is very much about instrumental music with a great feel, where soulful improvising takes place over some of the best rhythm section players in Toronto and where each tune dares the listener to sit still. The groups debut recording CHUNKED is now out on Modica Music and is produced by JUNO Award winner Roberto Occhipinti, one of Canadas most versatile musicians. Long known for his work in classical and jazz music, Roberto is also the founder of Torontos most influential soul/r&b band Soul Stew. ________________________________________________________________________________ ARTIST: Alex Terrier CD TITLE Roundtrip Label: Self Produced Order CD: http://www.alexterriermusic.com Buy on iTunes: Born in Paris, France, Alex Terrier discovered the magic of music by playing classical piano pieces. The night he heard live Jazz for the first time, Alex Terrier decided to devote his life to music and Jazz would be the path to follow. Parker, Miles and Coltrane would be his first guides to Jazz as the works of Mozart, Beethoven, Schoenberg and Bartok would be his source of study for composition. With his saxophone, Alex traveled Europe before flying to Boston to attend Berklee College. He is now living in New York and is on 9 albums. His album Stop Requested (Aphrodite Records) features legendary George Garzone who once was Alexs teacher. Roundtrip opens with the burning, up tempo title track with Terrier coming on like a hurricane on the alto saxophone. Terrier explains, This piece is based on a composition by Wayne Shorter. I wanted to write an up-tempo tune, with the energy and sound that are specific to the New York sound. I hope one can hear the strong influence of artists such as Art Blakey, Wayne Shorter and Bobby Watson. For me it truly reflects the excitement of returning to New York City after traveling around the world!

Terrier wrote The Spirit Will Not Descend Without A Song after reading Blues People by Leroi Jones. E.S.B. And Ecstasy is a composition very much in the stream of the Dave Holland Quintet with long and asymmetrical bass patterns and many different sections. I guess for the solo Im trying to put myself in a state of electrical stimulation and under ecstasy, said Terrier. On the lyrical, poetic song, Le Miroir Des Anges Dguiss (The Mirror of The Disguised Angels), the saxophonist captures the vibe of a famous place in Paris. Terrier fills us in; You can find this mirror in an old bookstore in Paris located in the center by the river. One should go on the second floor to find it. It is used to leave messages to people around the world who have to come to the mirror to read them (an old fashion IM I guess!). I did leave a message and then wrote this piece. I tried to be as lyrical as possible again, and I wanted it to be poetic. It is probably the most European influenced song in its feel and the compositional techniques Ive used. Tompkins Square, featuring Edouard Brenneisen on guitar, finds the band in a contemplative, but swinging mood, playing a piece that is dedicated to a close friend of Terriers, and a savvy art lover. It was written after the pair walked around the city late one night and ended up in Tompkins Square park hanging out with a crowd of East Village locals all night. Departure is very slow and poetic. The most humble song, just about doing something beautiful (I hope). A departure might bring sadness to leave someone you care for, a place youre attached to . . . but it brings also the joy of doing something new, going in the unknown, and a certain sense of serenity. This piece is dedicated to my younger sister, said Terrier. The album closes with The Dark Side Of Democracy, written in the style of one of Terriers heroes, Ornette Coleman. Roundtrip is a powerfully engaging statement from a new voice on the saxophone. One that has grabbed the attention of players that represent the pinnacle of artistry on the instrument, Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, George Garzone, Jerome Sabbagh and others. Works of art, literature and music are often judged by how much of his/her true self the creator has put into the work. With that criteria, Roundtrip has the great potential to exceed expectations, to delight and to inspire. ________________________________________________________________________________ ARTIST: Sophie Berkal-Sarbit CD TITLE: Young & Foolish LABEL: 7ARTS Entertainment ORDER CD: In Stores BUY on iTUNES: At the tender age of nineteen, Winnipeg native Sophie Berkal-Sarbit is already a seasoned performer, imbueing her sumptuous voice with a heady cocktail of emotion, musical skill, infallible pitch and innate good taste.
