Dear Parent/Guardian: Help your child succeed in school sign up for free tutoring! As a result of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001, your child may receive extra help in the areas of math, reading, and language arts. You can receive this free tutoring because your childs school is in its second year or later of school improvement. You can choose a free tutoring program that is best for your child. A list of approved tutoring providers/agencies is enclosed. These providers/agencies have been approved by the Ohio Department of Education and will provide your child with tutoring that is coordinated with what is being taught in school. If you are interested in tutoring services for your child, complete the enclosed Supplemental Educational Services Request form, select your first and second choice provider/agency, detach, and return to the Office of School Improvement and External Resources on or before October 5, 2007. To assist you in making a decision, the provider listing in this booklet provides you with contact information for each provider/agency. This booklet also supplies you with questions you may want to ask the providers/agencies as you make the best selection for your child. Supplemental Educational Services expand Dayton Public Schools program offerings to guarantee that every child receives a quality education. If you have general questions or need assistance selecting a provider/agency, please contact the Office of School Improvement and External Resources, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at (937) 542-3333 or (937) 542-3373. DAYTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS SUPPLEMENTAL EDUCATIONAL SERVICES (SES) PROGRAM

In 2002, Congress passed the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. Its purpose is to improve schools in which children have not done well on state tests. Under this law, children in certain schools may be provided with tutoring services. This booklet explains where your child can be tutored at no cost to you. The No Child Left Behind Act allows state approved private agencies (SES providers) to provide tutoring to students who attend Title I schools that have not met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for three or more years. The school districts Title I program pays the private agencies to provide the tutoring, so there is no cost to the parent/guardian. The maximum tutoring fee to be paid per student is $1,604.95 for the 2007 2008 school year.

Who is eligible for SES free tutoring?

Dayton Public Schools students who attend a Title I school identified for improvement are eligible for tutoring. Supplemental Educational Services Request forms received by the deadline of October 5, 2007 will be considered for the first round enrollment. If the Supplemental Educational Services Request forms received exceeds the maximum number of slots, we prioritize by the lowest achieving students in grades 2-8. You will be notified by the Office of School Improvement and External Resources if your child is placed on a waiting list.

Where does tutoring take place?

There are many tutoring sites throughout the city. Tutoring may occur in tutoring centers, in your home, the public library, and in Dayton Public Schools. Some providers/agencies offer online tutoring so that your child may be tutored from home, if you have computer access available. Check the listing to see where the program you want offer services.

When is tutoring offered?

Different programs offer tutoring at different times. Some are after-school and others are on weekends. They have different start dates. The listing of services in this booklet tells the possible schedule; however, when you meet the SES provider a definite schedule will be decided upon.

Is transportation available?
Only a few SES providers/agencies offer transportation. The program description will give you this information. Most of the tutoring will start immediately after-school. Check with the provider for additional information.

What must I do?

You must meet with the SES provider/agency you selected to develop and sign an Educational Achievement Plan (EAP) before tutoring can begin. This is very important! The EAP sets the goals for your child. The instructor uses it to guide the tutoring sessions. The SES provider/agency will call or write to you for an appointment for you to sign the EAP.

My child has an IEP. Is he/she eligible for tutoring?

Children with an IEP are eligible for tutoring. However, not all SES providers can accommodate children with an IEP. Check the listings or call the SES provider/agency. Providers/Agencies able to provide tutoring to students in Special Education and have an IEP are listed as experience teaching students with specific disabilities in the Special Qualifications section.

My child is an ESL student. Is he/she eligible for tutoring?

Children in the ESL program are eligible for tutoring. However, not all SES providers/agencies can accommodate children in the ESL program. Check the listings or call the SES provider/agency. Providers/Agencies able to provide tutoring to students in the ESL program are listed as experience teaching LEP students in the Special Qualifications section.

HOW THE SES PROCESS WORKS

PARENT RESPONSIBILITY CHECKLIST
Select an SES provider/agency from the listing in this booklet by completing the SES Request Form and return to the Office of School Improvement and External Resources. Your child can only be tutored by one SES provider/agency. Meet with the provider/agency that I selected to provide my childs tutoring. The SES provider/agency will call or write me to set up an appointment to develop and sign the Educational Achievement Plan (EAP). I will make sure that I receive my copy of the EAP. Call the provider/agency or the Office of School Improvement and External Resources at (937) 542-3333 or (937) 542-3373, if the SES provider/agency have not contacted me by October 26, 2007 Ensure that SES provider/agency has accurate contact information. Begin Tutoring. Ensure that my child attends every session. Tutoring usually begins approximately three (3) weeks after the SES provider/agency submits the signed EAP to the Office of School Improvement and External Resources for verification and authorization.

SES PROVIDER/AGENCY RESPONSIBILITY CHECKLIST

Contact parents/guardians for an appointment to develop and sign the Educational Achievement Plan (EAP). Secure the signature of the building principal or principals designee on the EAP. Submit EAP to the Office of School Improvement and External Resources for verification and authorization. Begin tutor after receiving authorization (purchase order) from the Office of School Improvement and External Resources.

DAYTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS RESPONSIBILITY CHECKLIST

(Office of School Improvement and External Resources) Mail SES Parent Booklet to the home of every student enrolled in a Title I School in school improvement status. Review, process, and authorize SES Requests Forms. Send SES providers/agencies an enrollment list. Review, process, and authorize signed Educational Achievement Plans. Monitor SES tutoring.

SELECTION PROCESS SUMMARY

A listing of approved providers for the Dayton Public Schools District is listed in this booklet. If you are interested in tutoring services for your child(ren), select your first (1st) and second (2nd) choices for a provider and, write the providers names on the lines, detach the enclosed Supplemental Educational Services Request form, complete the Supplemental Educational Services Request form, and return to the Office of School Improvement and External Resources on or before October 5, 2007 to be considered for first round enrollment. DO NOT RETURN THE REQUEST FORM TO YOUR CHILDS SCHOOL. If it becomes necessary to prioritize students who will be receiving tutoring services because maximum capacity has been achieved, placement will be made according to specific grade levels and/or lowest achieving students. Students who are not selected and are placed on a wait list will be notified by mail of their status. If your child is selected, your child will be assigned to your first choice or second choice provider. If the provider(s) you choose decides not to provide services to Dayton Public Schools, you will be contacted by the Office of School Improvement and External Resources for an alternate provider. The provider you choose will be given your childs name and your contact information. The provider will contact you by October 26, 2007 to set a time to develop and sign an Educational Achievement Plan (EAP) for your child. This is very important! Tutoring may not begin without the parents or legal guardians signature on the Educational Achievement Plan. If the provider has not contacted you by October 26, 2007 contact the provider or contact the Office of School Improvement and External Resources at (937) 542-3333 or (937) 542-3373. Once the EAP has been completed and signed by the parent/guardian, school principal or the principals designee, and the provider, it will be submitted to the Office of School Improvement and External Resources to be approved and processed. This period may take up to three (3) weeks.
