Lightweight Backpacking Monday, July 13 6:30 pm
We all know that carrying 40+ lbs on your back can
quickly take the fun out of a wilderness experience, but
those ultralight backpackers seem a little too intense.
Come learn why lightweight backpacking is not only for
the fanatical. Its principles of simplification and flexibil-
ity will help you cut your weight dramatically and
increase your enjoyment of the outdoors. From shel-
ters to sleeping bags, cooking systems to packing sys-
tems, this clinic will give you the tools to find the right
balance between lightweight and luxury for your camp-
ing style. Join Pacific Crest Trail thru-hiker, Claire
Porter, to find out how little you truly need.

in the BWCA. Bear Paulsen, one of our wilderness-

routes and general wilderness tripping techniques.
He'll give you hints on avoiding the crowds whether
you're basecamping or travelling daily. He'll also share
ways to avoid the two most threatening parts of canoe

Join Brian Bahn, one our Nordic Walking experts, for a
Nordic Walk using our demo poles. Walking is fantas-
tic exercise, but Nordic Walking also exercises your

Good Bye Andy Knapp
Andy Knapp, Midwest Mountaioneering’s long time canoe, kayak, ski and
camping gear buyer died of cancer on June 22nd. He had been battling

kidney cancer for over six years. We will dearly miss his tremendous
enthusiasm for all things outdoors. He was, perhaps, the most persistent
outdoor adventurer we have ever known. He logged more than 156,000 July 16-19
miles by bike, foot and paddle, accomplishing more in his 61 years than
most of us have ever dreamed of. Check out his blog for the incredible
