Coal tar (can be very effective, but though no significant increased risk of cancer in human treatment with coal tar shampoos has been found[22] caution is advised since coal tar iscarcinogenic in animals, and heavy human occupational exposures do increase cancer risks) Lithium gluconate[23] Lithium succinate[24] Vitamin B6 ointment[25] Topical steroid: Chronic treatment with topical corticosteroids may lead to permanent atrophyand telangiectasia of the skin.[26][27] Pimecrolimus, brand name Elidel[28] Isotretinoin (Accutane) at low dose 5 mg to 10 mg: As a last resort in refractory disease, sebosuppressive agent isotretinoin (Accutane) may be used to reduce sebaceous gland activity. However, isotretinoin has potentially serious side effects and few patients with seborrhea are appropriate candidates for therapy.

[edit]Phototherapy

Some dermatologists recommend photodynamic therapy using UVA and UV-B laser or red and blueLED light to inhibit the growth of Malassezia fungus and reduce seborrhoeic inflammation.[29][30][31]

[edit]Diet

There is evidence of a relationship between seborrheic dermatitis and intestinal yeast, such ascandida.[56] An antifungal diet consisting of the elimination of sugar and increasing vegetable intake should reduce seborrheic dermatitis.[57][58]

Milk of magnesia is also used as a folk remedy, applied and massaged into the scalp a few minutes before washing, to relieve symptoms of seborrhea and dandruff. The mechanism for its effectiveness in this application, like the causes of seborrhea itself, are unknown. An additional folk use is for the treatment of acne or oily skin by applying topically, allowing to dry, and then washing it off the face (or other body part). It is also said to be used for seborrheic dermatitis, which is a drying and flaking of the skin similar to dandruff but often occurring on the face.[14]
