Horizon 3G-n fiber

Motorolas Zero Foot Printing UMTS/HSxPA solution

Motorola, in collaboration with our customers, has identified the requirements for distributed RF systems that can provide targeted or wide area coverage, while reducing cell site and backhaul costs in UMTS/ HSxPA networks. The Horizon 3G-n fiber enables the separation of BBU and RRU over a fiber link of up to 100km, thus allowing for the pooling of modem frames in a traditional cell site environment (also known as the Node B Hotel concept) and the location of the RRU as close to the required area of coverage as possible. This capability significantly reduces OPEX and RF losses, while increasing the flexibility of cell site deployment. The Zero Foot Printing approach realized by the Horizon 3G-n fiber offers a versatile solution for deployments in instances where traditional macro-cellular Horizon 3G-n is not the most appropriate choice. Horizon 3Gn fiber is extremely flexible, scaleable from Omni to 12 sector carrier configurations.

The Motorola Horizon 3G-n fiber is a distributed UMTS/HSxPA base station, consisting of a Baseband unit (BBU) and Remote RF unit (RRU). The BBU interfaces to the RRU via fiber links, leading to significant implementation benefit and flexibility. This distributed architecture significantly simplifies and reduces the cost of deploying UMTS/HSxPA as it can for example easily be used to upgrade an existing 2G site or to expand capacity on an existing 3G site. FEATURES AND BENEFITS

Fast Time to Revenue Rapid Network Set-Up: The BBU and RRU can be separated over a fiber link up to 100km in length and positions the RF head as close to the required area of coverage as possible. This capability provides rapid coverage flexibility to capture targeted subscribers during initial deployment. Maximum Revenue Capture: Horizon 3G-n fiber solution supports HSDPA, HSUPA, STTD and TSTD open loop and closed loop transmit diversity and 4-way receive diversity. These features provide extra capacity and broader coverage for UMTS/HSxPA service delivery while maximizing revenue opportunities. Controlled Cost of Ownership Deployment Flexibility: The compact 1U BBU is suitable to be installed in a standard 19 rack enabling it to be mounted in a limited space environment, such as existing 2G BTS. The capability of sharing cabinets, battery backup power, transmissions and feeder systems with existing 2G sites leverages previous investments and significantly reduces CAPEX. The RRU can be pole mounted, reducing site acquisition costs. Horizon 3G-n fiber supports digital pre-distortion and Doherty techniques within the power amplifier to enhance efficiency, which reduces the system power consumption and lowers OPEX. Scaleable: The service provider can expand the site capacity up to a maximum of 12 sector carriers by linking up to four BBU and up to six RRU. High Quality Service Provision Robust Service Provision: Redundancy from baseband pooled resource and N+1 backup mode ensures that subscribers experience consistent and high quality UMTS/HSxPA network access and service delivery, equivalent to that provided by todays mature GSM Networks
