COURSE SYLLABUS FOR 3D ANIMATION 1:

Summer Semester (from 5/16/13 to 8/8/13 in Room 225)

FACULTY INFORMATION:
Broward College Digital Media/Multimedia Technology South Campus Daniel Coes Phone: 954 201 8916 Email: dcoes@broward.edu Student Hotline: 954 201 4900

Safety Emergency: 954 893 5700

DESCRIPTION:
This course will give students an induction to Maya and a basic functional understanding of the program as well as some of the common practices in 3D and multimedia production.

OBJECTIVES:
Learning the interface of Maya Introduction to Modeling techniques An overview of 3D in multimedia

TEXTBOOKS

MATERIALS:
All software is available on class machines (Adobe CS6 etc) A media storage device is needed to store files. Students will be responsible for saving all files before leaving class

REQUIREMENTS:

Although no previous knowledge of 3D is necessary for this introductory course, a basic knowledge of Photoshop is recommended as it will be used as an auxiliary program for some exercises. It is also strongly recommended that the student have a way of working on assignments outside of class, be it through the use of their own computer at home, or one provided in the labs.

1) INTRO CLASS: 5/16/13

Introductions. Teacher background and experience, Student Background and Experience. Brief Description of Class structure and projects Intro to 3D: What is 3D? Where is it used? Overview and brief History of Maya A comprehensive oveview of the Maya interface:

-Shelf -Viewports - Navigation -Timeline -Channel Box -Attribute Editor -Hypergraph -Hypershade/Texture Editor -Tool Settings -Preferences: Plug-in Manager, Settings, customization, etc. -Command Line and Script Editor NO ASSIGNMENT - Maya is an extremely powerful 3D application, more so than many other applications that exist out there. It is also one of the more intimidating applications to learn. Your only assignment for this class is to try and get more familiar wit h the interface and some of the concepts discussed in this class.

2) INTRODUCTION TO MODELING 5/23/13

Brief Revision/Refresher of interface (Will be elaborated later) Basic concepts in CG: Nodes, Local vs. World Space, Hierarchies, History, etc. Combining and separating objects History (effect it has on scene nodes) freeze transforms setting up reference planes and grid layout ASSIGNMENT: Model simple scene using basic primitives. Such as airplane tutorial from book.

3) POLYGON MODELING (INTRO) 5/30/13

Brief Revision/Refresher of interface (Will be elaborated later) Maya as modeling tool - The different ways in which a 3D shape can be formed Creating Basic Shapes in Polygons Polygonal Modeling/Box Modeling The Parts of a Polygon Low Polygon Modeling High Polygon Modeling BASIC POLYGON OPERATIONS: Extrude, Bevel, Chamfer, Collapse etc. Polygons in different medias (film, games, architecture). Nurbs vs. Polygons A basic look at deformers for Polygonal modeling UV unwrapping Textures and getting 2D images onto 3D objects ASSIGNMENT (15 pts): PART 1: Using two reference images the student will model around the references to create a simple 3D model such as a house. ASSIGNMENT (15 pts): PART 2: Using the model from the first exercise students will apply an image to be used as a material.

.6)

ADVANCED MODELING TECHNIQUES 6/6/13

NURBS and surfaces Lathe Revolve Surface Conversion settings Sub-Division Surfaces Converting Surfaces Optimizing Surfaces Special transform Extruding along path Combining objects Separating objects Bridging objects Using the tool settings for soft selection

ASSIGNMENT: bring in a vector logo in a format such as. ai or .eps and give it

7) MATERIALS AND RENDERING 6/13/13

Lighting Cameras

8) PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER (Applying combined methods and techniques) 6/20/13

Rendering (using Maya's default software renderer)

ASSIGNMENT: Using one of the previous assignments such add the logo or the house, the student will shoot proper materials, lighting and render the model based on the techniques discussed in class.

ASSIGNMENT (5 pts): Model hand (to be started in class) following the example from page 120-127. Apply smoothing to the model.

10) LIGHTING 6/27/13

TUTORIAL: (5 pts). To be completed in class. Assemble a lamp using both polygon and NURBS techniques. insert appropriate lighting and materials.

9) ADVANCED MODELING 7/4/13

Organic Modeling Tutorial The basics of animation: Keyframes-setting and editing them. Timeline and Preferences Animating Channels: Anything can be animated in Maya. How to animate individual channels. Introduction to animation curves.

ASSIGNMENT: The student will import a 2d image and make it 3d. Then setup a camera animation using a background image on a basic skybox and render the basic animation.

12) SKINNING 7/11/13

Bind Skin Methods: Weight Painting

ASSIGNMENT: Using the hand modeled in the previous class, students will create a skeleton to animate it.

13-16) FINAL ASSIGNMENT 7/18/13-8/8/13

Scene Organization: outliner and layers Exporting a model to other formats FINAL ASSIGNMENT: Students will be given a choice of projects to work on. Each has it's own challenges. Students will be given a longer time frame to turn in a more complex model made up of multiple parts.
