It matters not which road I take How dark or lone it be I know, O God, twill somewhere join The road that leads to Thee. Frederick Gordon Meyer passed away surrounded by his family. A Celebration of Life will be held October 6th at 11 a.m., Vancouver First Church of God, 3300 NE 78th St. Vancouver, WA 98665. A private family burial will be at the Sara Cemetery. Fred, one of six children, was born April 20, 1922, at the red hills family farm in Dundee, OR. He attended Oregon State College from 1940-1941, majoring in agriculture. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, Fred enlisted in the Army and trained in field artillery at Camp Roberts, CA, and Fort Sill, OK. He was posted at Fort Benning, GA, commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, and assigned to the 89th Infantry Division at Camp Butner, NC. Fred shipped out with a large North Atlantic convoy to Camp Lucky Strike in France. His infantry platoon deactivated German minefields on the French coast. Following The Bulge, his rifle platoon, with General Pattons 3rd Army, was in combat in Luxembourg. German death camps Ohrdruff and Buchenwald were seized. Combat across The Fatherland ceased near the Czech border when Germany surrendered. He then spent a year in occupation duties in Lintz and Vienna, Austria where he was Company Commander of occupation troops. He declined a military career and returned to Oregon State University and graduated with a degree in agriculture. After a short period with the NW and California Walnut Growers, Fred returned to Oregon State and graduated with a Masters Degree in Economics. He taught adult education in agriculture in Oregon. He was asked to join the University of Alaska staff in Palmer where agriculture was being developed in the Matanuska Valley. He resigned this position to operate the family farm while his eldest brother recovered from a farming accident. Fred had many other careers. He performed farm appraisals and issued loans with the Federal Land Bank Association. He worked as a licensed real estate broker. He managed the real estate division with the Washington State Highway Department. His last career before retirement was with Clark Public Utilities in engineering. Fred was committed to community, church and school service. He was a past worthy patron of the Order of Eastern Star and a Mason. He was an active Rotarian since 1955, serving as president from 1986-1987. He received the distinguished Rotarian award in 2003. A man of deep faith, Fred loved his Lord, his family and his Sara farm. He was a treasure of stories and possessed a unique sense of humor. He was an avid reader and constantly learning. His Bible was always in his pocket and he enjoyed reading one of his favorite authors, Louis Lamour. He is survived by his wife Marjorie. He met his Margie at Oregon State University. They were married July 25, 1948 and were companions for over 65 years. With Margie they lived in the old farm house over fifty years and raised four children; Tom (Jean) Meyer, Margaret (Bob) Smith, Jim Meyer, and Jeannie Meyer. Fred was extremely proud of his four grandchildren; Travis, Kristi, Matthew and Laura. Contributions in the name of Frederick G.
