Sample Essays and their parts Symbolism in Lord of the Flies Introduction: Symbolism is a very important factor in many

books. In Lord of the Flies written by William Golding the use of symbolism is ever present. At a first glance many may not think much of the symbols; however with some in-depth thought you can see that they reflect the various situations on this microcosm of an island. As time on the island continues, the symbols change with it, and what they mean also is represented by this change. The pigs, the conch and Piggys specs are all Symbolic of the destruction and savagery that grows on the island. Paragraph II: Topic Sentence: Firstly, the glasses that Piggy wore upon arrival of the island are symbolic of the state of the island in many ways. Details: -glasses are used to create fire - the glasses are stolen, the tribe is divided - Piggy dies, and with him intelligence Paragraph III Topic Sentence: Secondly the conch is a symbolic force on the island, its existence rivals that of a peace officer or member of the law. Details: -conch symbolizes order at the beginning -after the fire is let out, the conch is disrespected -tribes are divided, the conch is abandoned Paragraph IV Topic Sentence: Lastly, the victims of the hunters themselves represent the savagery and destruction of the boys morals on the island. Details: -Jack will not kill the pig -killing a pig results in the fire going out - they kill a mother and babies pig, recklessly decreasing the pig population Paragraph V Concluding sentences re-stating the main idea of the essay: The preceding symbols strongly prove the transitions from morals to chaos. Golding quite clearly used symbolism throughout the book to represent the state of the boys society, and how it slowly changed to an impious microcosm. Characterization in John Updikes A&P Introduction: Sammy, the young character in John Updike's "A & P" is truly a dynamic character. At the beginning of this short story, Sammy seems to be maintaining the

status quo in his job as a checker at the local grocery store in a small New England beach town. He is content until the day that three young women walk into the grocery store in just their bathing suits, no shirts and no shoes. Immediately, Sammy's world is turned upside down and Sammy will undergo a sudden, dynamic change that even surprises him. Conflict in Beowulf Introduction: Conflict is a condition of opposition and discord. In a novel or story a main character may be the focus in determining the result of a conflict. Therefore, secondary characters often may be discounted for their own parts in the resolution to the story. Hrothgar, the king of the Danes and a secondary character in the epic, Beowulf, written by an unknown author, was responsible for abolishing his land of the monstrosity that plagued his domain. Fantasy in Peter Pan Introduction: Fantasy is a genre that focuses on stories that are familiar with enough touches of the unreal, (Zipes, 552). This gives the reader the familiarity of being in a world that has never existed, which may invoke nostalgia for the never -was (Zipes, 552). The world of fantasy must still hold true to a persons internal logic and keep with general conventions. The stories may contain elements of social hierarchies, taboos, supernatural creatures, magic, high moral standards, quests and villains, (Zipes, 552). Peter Pan, written by J. M. Barrie in 1928, is a wonderful example of fantasy. The work embodies a strange world that has the hint of familiarity. While there are many times the characters do seemingly impossible feats, there is a feeling of logic engulfed within the compromises that are made to be able to perform such feats. Simile in Homers The Iliad Introduction: There can be a number of reasons that an author decides to write a particular work. However, the common goal of all authors is to catch the attention of the reader and eventually make an impression of some sort on the reader. There are many different approaches that the author may take in order to achieve this common goal. One approach that can be used is the particular style of writing that the author chooses. In the epic poemby Homer called the Iliad, Homers formula to gain the attention of the reader employs similes and metaphors. Being that the Iliad is an epic poem, it communicates to the reader the thoughts and messages that Homer wishes to convey. It is important for the reader to understand the style of writing that Homer uses in order to fully grasp the message of the work.
