Profile

After obtaining Masters Degree in Geology,


Shri Sujit Dasgupta joined Geological Survey of India
(GSI) in the mid seventies and continued with the
organization till his superannuation in 2010 from the
post of Deputy Director General. He has worked in
different fields of earth-science including geological
mapping, geotechnical investigation, seismotectonics,
earthquake hazard studies etc among others. With his
strong geological background he is a resource person on
the geology of northeast India and Burma. He was
awarded National Mineral Award in 1988 by the
Government of India for his contribution in the field of
geosciences. After completing the International Training
course on Seismology and Seismic Risk Mitigation in
1993, he took up the assignment of compiling the
Seismotectonic Atlas of India and its Environs which
was published by GSI in 2000. This is an important
document being utilized by all major construction
project authorities in India. He was associated with the
post earthquake surveys in the aftermath of the 1997,
2001 and 2004 earthquakes in India and was editor of
the GSI publication on the 2004 Sumatra-Andaman
earthquake. He was a member of NCSDP, CWC for more
than a decade. Since 2004 he attended and contributed
in UNESCO sponsored all the workshops (RELSAR:
Bangladesh, 2004; China; 2005; Thailand, 2006; Bhutan,
2008 & Iran, 2011). After leaving GSI he was associated
with NHPC for one year (2011) as Consultant for their
Burma (Myanmar) Hydroelectric projects. During 2012-
2014 he is extending his expertise as Consultant to
different hydropower projects towards preparation of
PFR/DPR on earthquake & engineering geological
problems.
