Program Overview
Many scientific and technical professionals, while extremely prepared professionally, have little to no background experience or education in business management. In todays world, these are key skills for any professional who aims at becoming a good manager and leader. Within this context, IE has developed a program that will enhance top researchers ability to make an impact and develop their core skills in areas such as finance, strategy, leadership or marketing, just to name a few. Management Fundamentals and Skills for Scientists and Researchers (MFSSR) has specifically been designed to provide participants with a set of tools and concepts in General Management and Leadership. Participants will be exposed to a real business framework, creating an environment prone to entrepreneurship amongst them and will develop business projects that will enable them to move from bench to market.

Mara Blasco
CNIO Director

In 2013 we will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the inauguration of the CNIO building. Within only one decade, CNIO has positioned itself as one of the best cancer research centres of the world as evidenced by the outstanding quality of its scientic publications. As the new CNIO Director, I look forward to the next decade of the Centre with two major goals in mind: to provide the optimal conditions for our researchers to continue making key discoveries for the advancement of oncology and to facilitate the important translation of our discoveries into innovative products and new ventures that improve our capacities to prevent, diagnose, treat and cure cancer. The CNINNOTRAIN program will be instrumental to enable our scientists at the CNIO to achieve this goal by fusing hands-on training in cutting-edge cancer research and managerial skills into a unique mix of polyvalent professional skills that are necessary to bridge the gap between bench and bedside. Within our CNINNOTRAIN program the Management Fundamentals and Skills for Scientists and Researchers Program plays a pivotal role. IE Business School has developed a program that will enhance the ability of top researchers to make an impact and develop their core skills in areas such as nance, strategy, leadership or marketing, to name a few. Participants will also learn to develop a business project, thus optimizing their potential and professional opportunities.

The face - to - face periods will take place once a month during 1,5 days (Friday + Saturday morning). The program will start in October 2012. Topics to be discussed include:

MODULE 1. Thinking Strategically

Every leaders success depends on his or her ability to obtain results and profitable growth using the best and most appropriate strategies. To do so, this module will analyze the war that is market competition and the plan to win it, using challenging strategies that offer added

value to its shareholders. It will also provide tools to understand the economic environment and what lies behind the gap that separates top performing companies from those at the bottom. Understanding the economics of healthcare will also be a part of this module. Finally, this module will help develop a strategic mindset that will push participants to fully understand the implications that each industrys endowment of resources and capabilities has on creating distinctive and value-adding strategies for their firms.

MODULE 2. Adopting the Customers Perspectives

The ability to find, acquire and retain the most profitable clientele has become the key for competitive advantage. In order to do so, market orientation and client focus are vital. Understanding marketing strategies and objectives will help participants play a more active and effective role in the overall strategic decision making process.

MODULE 3. Financial Accounting

The financial situation of any company is vital when making strategic decisions on any functional division or business level. Most decisions need to be justified and backed-up by numbers. This module will be provided before the start of the program in an online format.

MODULE 4. Legal issues

In this module, participants will gain the necessary expertise to interact with legal issues such as intellectual property and regulatory aspects that affect a scientists work. Therefore participants will be able to ask lawyers the right questions, understand what they are saying and be able to relay this information to fellow managers.

MODULE 5. Successful Operations for Competitive Advantage

The success of a company is closely related to a perfect fitting of all its strategic and operational aspects. A careful design of operations can be the main cause of success for any firm, but only as long as it fits in the whole picture, and quite particularly with its most important asset: its people. The objective of this module is to understand how important operations management is for the success of a company, and how operational innovation can lead to very positive results even in highly competitive environments.

MODULE 6. Financial Management and Performance Measurement

This module aims to provide participants with the latest concepts and tools in financial management. How financial management tools may help any manager not just the finance specialist to make sounder decisions will first be discussed. Then, emphasis will be placed on two key areas of finance: how to budget and forecast, including the usefulness of sensitivity and scenario analysis, with practical examples on forecasting short term financing needs; as well as, valuation and value creation, with a focus on how to appraise specific investment decisions.

MODULE 7. Managing Oneself and Managing People

From day one of the program, participants will build upon their interpersonal and cross-cultural experiences, and improve their teambuilding, presentation and communication skills due to IEs learning model. Furthermore the program introduces key factors that have an impact on the structure and culture of organizations, as well as the behavior and attitudes of groups and individuals. Specific topics to be covered in this module are: negotiation, communication skills and managing human resources.

MODULE 8. Entrepreneurship Applying Innovation

Entrepreneurship is the integrative theme and module of the program. It reflects the fact that founding a new business requires an overall entrepreneurial mindset and capabilities. Therefore, this transversal module will cover the key skills required to create a new venture. Participants will learn how to recognize and evaluate new venture opportunities, understanding both the entrepreneurs as well as the investors perspective, and how to develop and pitch a startup business.

Who the Program is Designed for

This international executive program has been designed for scientists and researchers with a technical background looking to further their career in the business environment, developing their individual skills, acquiring a command of management tools and applying their knowledge and research to the business world; thus, optimizing their potential and professional opportunities.

Learning Model
The program aims to develop the vision, skills and management capabilities required to meet the many and varied global and economic business challenges organizations are facing today, and will face in the near future. Our business schools training model promotes personal, intellectual and professional development and does so in a global framework to expand and deepen international perspectives among participants.

Our main learning approaches:

Case Method
Business case studies are the main learning methodology used in the program. These practical case studies describe real business situations where a final decision has to be made individually or by the group after stimulating discussions and debates. This is a highly effective learning model which allows participants to reach their full academic potential. Participants have to analyze each piece of new knowledge, concepts, techniques and ideas individually, in groups and in class, which broaden their vision and enable them to gain a global understanding and strategic perspective of the business world.

Be part of a team Teamwork is the core element of this program. Participants will learn how to manage business decisions in an international context by working with a wide range of cultures, personalities, business functions and industries. During the program they will be divided into groups where they will have to learn how to work together, share experiences and knowledge in order to achieve a common goal: make the right business decision.

Apply the learning and develop a business plan The startup business plan project is one of the most valuable team exercises of the program. It will help participants bring all the management concepts together and implement the learning in a business plan which will be developed throughout the program. The cross disciplinary Entrepreneurship module will include a range of learning experiences that culminate in the development of such a plan.

Online Methodology
The online learning dynamic is based on combining Online Presentations, Live Videoconference sessions, Case Studies and simultaneous discussion Forums. Topics are analyzed through participants discussion of real business cases and simulations under the guidance of the professors, who lead and focus the debates. Advantages of the Online Methodology IE Business Schools online training programs offer executives the opportunity to further their studies without interrupting their work schedule.

Networking Balance Investment Flexibility Technology

Exchange work experiences and expand your personal network.

Reconciliation between work, life and study.

Save on travel expenses and time.

Choose the time that is most suitable for you to actively participate. Use of communication tools essential to modern business practise.

With more than 10 years of success in the field, IEs Online Methodology has become a reference all over the world . IE Business School has been recognized as providing the #1 distance learning Masters Program in the World by The Economist Intelligence Unit, February 2010. Participation Class participation is fundamental in our learning methodology, providing participants with the know-how required to make decisions, solve problems and defend their positions. Online Campus Our virtual campus provides an exceptional communication platform bringing together peers, professors and IE staff members at any time of the day, regardless of their location. This virtual campus is the principal tool used by students and professors and is the basic web platform which supports the programs online activities.

Every participant is issued his or her own personal access codes to allow them to use the campus whenever they wish. Once logged in, executives have access to forums dedicated to the subjects they are currently studying, as well as, use of private forums for group work and the Virtual Caf; a space where all class members may discuss anything they choose. Live Videoconferences These sessions provide both executives and professors live participation via video and audio connections using webcams. Each session lasts 90 minutes and attendance is mandatory. This allows class members to maintain face-to-face contact with professors and fellow participants. Sessions consist of a mix of case discussions, group presentations and interactive academic sessions. Forum Discussions Executives participate in discussions, share their opinions and experiences, and debate with professors and fellow students through online forums. These forums are active 24 hours a day, allowing each executive to actively participate and contribute at the most convenient time for them. Case discussions may go deeper than in traditional full-time programs as they last several days, providing you, your peers and professors with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the business issues at hand.
