TEXT: Isaiah 28: 23 -29

Threshing floor Sermons (Part 11) INTRODUCTION:

At the heart of the discourse by the prophet in our text is the need for proper discernment. We cannot live by a one-glove-fit-all belief: or rely on a constant resort to the same medicine to heal all ailments. That discernment is at the heart of Gods mandate for man we just have to go back to the mandate given to Adam to name the animals in the garden. He had to consider their physiological, zoological and other individual characteristics before giving them their proper names. The farmer must be a person of discernment and discretion lest he ruin his crop by application of the wrong threshing instrument. He must consider the properties of each harvest before deciding which threshing implement is most suitable for the process. In his infinite wisdom, God does not pass us all through the same trials and tribulation. Some through the waters, some through the fire. He gives us the type of discipline suitable for our constitution, and His eternal plan. In this matter, that sacred principle holds true too: to whom much is given much is required. In addition, we are assured that our threshing is Gods direct responsibility. He doesnt leave it to hired hands: and this includes the Pastors, Bishops and whatever ecclesiastical titles they go by. This is because the best of men are merely MEN. Man in his best state is altogether vanity

our biases our lack of discernment our predilection for hurting, crushing, abusing, violating, mistreating and exploiting, the weak, while we unwisely pamper, indulge, and spoil the stubborn and rebellious amongst us.

All Crops need threshing;

All men need threshing In every person there is a measure of chaff. We are all compassed about with infirmity. In me dwells no good thing. We sin either by commission or omission. The husk wraps itself tightly around the corn. It cant be removed by a simple shaking. It needs to be threshed either by staff or a rod; the feet of horses, or the wheel of a cart. There is a fearful connection between our human nature and the sin of this world. John calls it the love of this world; Paul refers to it as conformity to this world If we are to be useful to fallen mankind we must, like Jesus, be holy, harmless, undefiled and separate from sinners. Threshing aids in this process. If not we will be a worthless heap even though we lie on the threshing floor. Threshing reminds us that we are valuable to the Husbandman. Whom the Lord loves he chastises and scourges every son he receives God told Israel Behold I have refined thee but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction (Isa 48:10) The presence of chaff is a reminder of our present imperfection, and not one sin shall enter heaven

Our presence on the threshing floor is prophetic of our future perfection and glory: for I reckon that the suffering of this present time re not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us {Rom8:18}. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, works for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal {II Cor 4:17-18}. Exercise patience in the process. Individuals, Churches, marriages, countries etc are tried in the furnace of affliction

The urgency for threshing and cleansing of the church should not push us into precipitous behaviour. Threshing must be done with prudence. There is one instrument for the fitches and another for the cumin. Each instrument suggests a limit of this threshing. The farmer wants to beat out the seed, not to break it in pieces by too severe a process. His wheel is not to grind, but to thresh; the horses' feet are not to break, but to separate. There is a lesson here for all parents. Our purification is not left in the hands of the servants, or in those of His enemies. Satan may sift us as wheat but will not thresh us as fitches No one should complain about the intensity of the operation on the threshing floor for none but the Omniscient God is in charge.

Threshing is not perennial.
This is seasonal, the flail, wheel, hoof, are not always with the farmer, he uses it at strategic times. Weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning. When it is done, it elicits the best of the harvest.
