Write about a character that shows courage. The novel of my choice is The Railway Children written by Edith Nesbit.

The novel is about the life of Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis after their father is mysteriously taken away. They have to lead a new, challenging life nearby railway line at a countryside, leaving their luxurious life in London. The character that shows courage in this novel is Bobbie. Firstly, Bobbie shows her courage during the event of saving the train. There is one day when the siblings take a walk nearby the railway line. Suddenly they witness a landslide occurs before them. They realize that a terrible accident may happen should a train passes by since there is a heap of rocks and trees right across the line. The children get the idea of waving flags made out of the girls petticoat to warn the train driver of the danger. Their attempt to give the sign is to no avail since they are waving the flags at the side of the line and the train driver fails to notice them. Suddenly Bobbie goes onto the railway line and waves the flags frantically. She is so brave at this point to risk her life just to save the train. The train stops just in time. From this event, I really admire Bobbies courage to stand on the line although it is very dangerous for her to do so. Next, Bobbies courage can also be seen when she stays in the dark tunnel with an injured boy named Jim. The children get to watch a paper-chase game one day. They are so excited watching the game and they even climb the hill just to watch the participants coming out of the other side of the tunnel. When they realize that there is one who is still in the tunnel, they feel worry. They decide to get into the dark tunnel to look for the boy. The boy is injured and he cannot walk. Bobbie courageously volunteers to stay with the boy while Peter and Phyllis look for help. The dark tunnel is not really a safe place but Bobbie braved herself to accompany Jim. She fights her fear of darkness just to help Jim. Her courage is admirable even though she is just a little girl. Finally, another courageous act shown by Bobbie is when she ventures on an unexpected journey just to get Peters broken toy train being mended. During her birthday, Peter gives her sweets that he puts in his toy train. Bobbie is so excited as she thinks that Peter gives her the toy train. Peter later agrees to give Bobbie part of the train and Bobbie chooses to take the broken part with the intention to get it being repaired later. The next day after her birthday, Bobbie takes the toy train to the railway and to where the engine stops. She is so brave to go there alone. She even climbs the train to talk to the fireman and the driver to seek help from them mending the toy train. She then goes through an unanticipated ride because the train suddenly starts to move. At that moment she feels very scared but her strong courage allows her to face the trouble on her own. She startles the train driver and his friends with her presence. After she explains her reason of being there, the two railwaymen agree to help her to repair the toy train and they also make sure Bobbie returns home safely. Bobbies bravery pays off when several weeks later the friendly driver and fireman return the toy train to her, good as new. I am amazed with Bobbies courage shown in this event as nothing can stop her to get the things that she wants. In conclusion, the three events above have clearly portray that Bobbie is the character that shows courage in the novel.
