Welcome!
My Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Community of St. Nicholas Greek

Orthodox Church, I welcome all of you to this wonderful Greek
Festival 2009.

The purpose of this festival is to expose our Greek

Orthodox Religion and Hellenic Culture to those who know
little about us. Our church is not only our Spiritual Center,
but our cultural and social center as well. We promote Greek
language, dance, cuisine, and other various aspects of Hellenism.
Socially, we have dances, parties, “get-togethers” and other
various family related gatherings.

Most importantly, our focus is our Greek Orthodox

Spirituality. This includes: Our growing and vibrant Sunday
School, accredited Greek School program for children and
adults, GOYA, JOY, Choir, Parish Council, our Ladies
Philoptochos Society (friends of the poor), St. Nicholas Elves,
“Young at Heart Club,” College Connectors, AHEPA and
Daughters of Penelope. As well as our outreach programs
such as Soup Kitchen, Global Relief Efforts, Orthodox
Christian Charities, Habitat for Humanity and local charitable
organizations, Hospital, Campus, Maritime, Police and Fire
Service Ministries.

Our St. Nicholas Community is one “Big Family” and this

weekend, you are part of it. So welcome home, enjoy, and this
weekend… Be Greek!
Love in Christ,

4 eggs
1/2 cup orange juice
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda

Sesame seeds
1 beaten egg mixed with 1 Tbsp. milk
1 Tbsp. anise flavor

Cream butter, add sugar gradually. Add one egg at a time,

3 times with baking powder and baking soda, gradually. This
makes a soft dough. Add anise.

Shape into desired forms, and place on buttered pans or

A brief history of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church

The founding fathers of the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church

of Portsmouth arrived in this country at an early age with tremendous
hopes and dreams. Peter Zacharias was the first immigrant to settle
in Portsmouth in 1893. Years later he brought his nephews George,
John and Basil Paras and Ernest Zacharias to Portsmouth. The Pappas
brothers, at ten and twelve, traveled across seas and oceans to meet their
older brother here.

These early settlers were homesick and missed celebrating liturgy in their
own church and in their native language. Eventually the men gathered
enough money to bring in a priest to Portsmouth to celebrate liturgy
on Feast Days. The services were held in Freemann’s Hall on the top
floor of the Franklin Block on Congress Street. By 1910, the Greek
community had grown and the men arranged to celebrate liturgy Feast
Day services on Madison Street at the Christ Episcopal Church when it
was not in use.

Eventually the Greek Orthodox faithful wanted their own spiritual house
where they could baptize their children, marry, and celebrate liturgy
without inconvenience. A group of men, now known as the Godfathers
of Saint Nicholas endeavored to establish a church of their own. In 1933
a committee, consisting of Andrew Jarvis, George Soteros, Chris Sagris,
George Scliris, Chris Roylos, Paul Chuliaris and Peter Stavrou submitted
a bid ($1,000) to purchase the vacant Cabot Street School. Through
fundraising and tremendous effort, the parishioners were able to
convert the school into the first Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church

of Portsmouth. In 1934 the church was consecrated by Archbishop

Athenagoras. At that time the Parish Council President was Andrew
Jarvis. The first priest was Father Thalasitis who also started the church’s
first choir. For 36 years the Cabot Street Church nurtured the spiritual
and community needs of the Greeks in Portsmouth.

The Saint Nicholas community grew and grew and in the late 1960’s it
was decided it was time for a new building. The Parish Council, headed
by William (Bill) Genimatas, purchased the land of the current facility
after a successful fundraiser at Pine Grove Pavilion. The Church was
completed in 1971. A procession comprised of the priest, choir, altar
boys and parishioners proudly walked from Cabot Street to the new
church on Alumni Drive, which now is Andrew Jarvis Drive.

Under the Spiritual Guidance of Father Angelo Pappas, who arrived

with his family in 1992, great strides were made in reaching out to the
community and becoming a stronger influence in the Greater Seacoast
area. “Religious Faith has been and continues to be the strength of America and
the values of the American way of life. Faith has sustained our nation in a living
tradition. Without the establishment of strong and durable institutions such as
the church, this tradition cannot exist.” - Father Angelo Pappas

In late 1996, St. Nicholas expanded further and Bishop Methodios (now
Metropolitan) conducted the door opening ceremony for the new Jarvis
Center Hall attached to the Church. Since the opening, the hall has
hosted countless social, educational, and Seacoast fundraising events as
well as Greek Festivals and many St. Nicholas functions.

2006 marked St. Nicholas’ 75th Anniversary. We thank the founding

fathers and mothers of Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, who as
stewards gave so generously of themselves to make all of this possible. We
also thank our present stewards as well who work so hard towards the
advancement of our faith and paving the way forward for generations to
come.

Greek Food Trivia
In ancient Greece, food and cooking were listed among the arts.
Plato, Homer, Aristotle, Demosthenes and Aristophanes all discussed
and wrote about food as much as they did the other arts. Food and
cooking remain an important part of modern Greek culture.
Greeks eat more cheese than anyone else, per capita consumption
averages 54 pounds.
The first tomato plants were planted in Greece by a Friar Francis
in 1818, in the gardens of a Capuchin monastery at the Choragic
Monument of Lysicrates (built in 335 B.C.) in Athens.
Greece is famous for its food. The climate is ideal for growing olives
and Greece is the World’s top exporter of olives. Olive Oil is used in
much greek cookery.
Greek honey, feta cheese and wine are also famously exported from
Greece. Much of Greece is rocky and mountainous and so sheep and
goats have always thrived better than other animals grown for their
meat. They feature heavily in Greek food.
