Bootcamp Objectives: Understand program expectations Increase knowledge of job application process Learn effective approaches writing a resume and cover letter Get to know other students!

Role of Co-op Coordinator


Select students for the program Develop employment opportunities for students Counsel and advise students, help to refine their career goals and develop effective job search strategies Facilitate workshops

Role of Co-op Coordinator


Advise and assist employers through all aspects of the co-op process Ensure that students are treated fairly and equitably throughout the placement process Visit students during work term and assist in resolving work place issues

My expectations
1. Be receptive to my feedback, suggestions and comments. 2. We are a TEAM communicate! 3. You will be accountable for your own job search and co-op commitments 4. Be realistic and open to different experiences 5. Respond to my emails

Communication
Use an e-mail address that you check at least 2X per day E-mail addresses: professional (avoid cute e-mail addresses like imaplayah@gmail.com); create an alias Signature: full name and discipline 48 hour response time for all e-mail Voicemail/messaging service is essential Please use formal language when e-mailing anyone in the Co-op office or on co-op business

Searching Jobs
Jobs listed for employment type: Summer/2012 Include only these Majors: LFSC, CHEM, ENSC Jobs with Application Status: You have not made a selection Sort by: Deadline Date If you do not see any jobs (once the recruitment period begins), contact your Coordinator

Application Requirements
Every job application must include in this order: 1) 2) 3) 4) Summary Sheet Cover Letter Resume Transcript

Pulled Applications
Your application will NOT be sent to an employer if: 1) The cover letter is not addressed correctly 2) It is missing any of the required documents 3) Contains personal contact information

Am I NSERC Eligible?
National Science & Engineering Research Council Provides funding for Academic Research in Universities or at NSERC eligible companies Must be a Canadian citizen or Landed Immigrant Must have at least a 68% average Can only hold 1 NSERC award per fiscal year and a max of 3 during undergrad

How do I know my application was sent to the employer?


You can verify your application status by checking your Job List in Placepro. There are 3 categories: 1) NEW = you have successfully applied 2) SENT = it has been sent to the employer 3) NOT SENT = we have pulled your application as it was incorrect or incomplete

Reminders
NEVER contact a Co-op Employer directly all inquiries are to go through your Coordinator Only upload ONE document at a time PREVIEW all documents AFTER uploading! Give portfolios clear names Do not include symbols in file names

Do not hit Apply until you are ready to apply with your portfolio! Even after you have hit apply, you can make changes to your portfolio up until the deadline Replace function will update all portfolios Read each job description CAREFULLY for special instructions ie applying through company website

Most jobs are posted for 3 days, but some will have different deadlines, so please check! Jobs close promptly at 9am the day of the posted job deadline Late applications will not be accepted! Do not wait until the last minute to upload documents!!

I will keep the Co-op job posting information, employer lists, contacts, passwords to web sites etc. confidential and not share it with anyone outside the Co-op Program. I agree NOT to solicit positions from Co-op employers directly on my own behalf, without prior permission from my Coordinator

I will provide accurate and appropriate information regarding my qualifications and interests to the Co-op Program and prospective employers.

I will accept or reject an offer only through my Coordinator or the Co-op Office

I will inform my Coordinator immediately after an interview if I do not want to accept the position

17. I will pay the necessary expenses if travel or relocation is necessary and not subsidized by the company. I am aware that geographic location is not a valid excuse for turning down a job offer. I understand that participation in the Co-op Program requires me to accept positions anywhere in Canada. If I have any restrictions regarding travel, I will discuss them with my Coordinator. I will honor the acceptance (written or verbal) of placement as a contractual agreement with the employer and I will not seek to alter this agreement. I understand that, if I break my contract of employment, I will not be satisfying the conditions of the program and I may receive a Fail (F) for the Co-op course(s).

25. I will communicate with my Co-op Coordinator, and/or the Co-op office about any issues, changes, events or problems related to my involvement in the Co-op Program or my Co-op work placement before discussing it with my employer. I will check my email regularly and promptly respond to all messages from Co-op staff.

I will behave appropriately according to UBC Policies for the duration of the time I am participating in the Co-op program, whether attending UBC or on a work term. I will furthermore respect the policies and procedures of the employer while on a work term, including policies regarding confidential/proprietary information.

34. I will pay my workshop fee by the deadline set by the Coop Program. I will pay the co-op course fee for every 4-month work term whether I have secured a co-op job through the program or my own efforts.

I understand that if I fail to meet the academic standards of the Co-op Program, I may be deferred or withdrawn from the program.

35. I understand that if I wish to withdraw from the Co-op Program, I must obtain the approval in writing by the Science Co-op Director prior to the commencement of the job search term. I will submit my withdrawal request to the Director and acquire approval by the following dates: For Winter work term (January April) by August 31st For Summer work term (May August) by December 31st For Fall work term (September December) by April 30th

37.

I understand that I may be assessed a Fail (F) for my co-op work term for the following reasons: a) Failure to report for work at the employers location b) Ending a work term without permission from my Coordinator and employer c) Dismissal based on my actions d) Unsatisfactory performance as determined by the employer e) Failure to submit required documents to the Co-op Office.
