ARE YOU HAPPY with the new-look library service in your part of Moorabool? Do you wish your community had a library service or could change what is offered now? Time is running out to respond to a Moorabool Council survey for current and potential library users who live outside Bacchus Marsh. Locals can make their voice heard via paper surveys available from library staff or by logging on to www. haveyou rsay moorabool. com.au Moorabool Chief Executive Rob Croxford said the survey was part of a detailed review into the operations of the Councils own rural library service, following the disbanding of the Central Highlands Regional Library Corporation, which in turn led to the end of visits from a semi-trailer style mobile library.

This beautiful hand-crafted furniture is being sold to raise funds for Ballans hospital, thanks to the Department of Justice and offenders sentenced to community work orders. Crates to Craft allows offenders to gain a qualification that will help them find work while recycling unwanted pallets. At an impressive $250 each, proceeds from the sale of Adirondack (Cape Cod) style chairs at Opportunity on Inglis go towards new equipment for Ballan and District Health and Care. The Crates to Craft project is a great example of what our community work programs are capable of delivering, Department of Justice Grampians Director Catherine Darbyshire said. Its a win-win as it gives back to the community while giving offenders useful skills. A sustainable initiative such as transforming wooden pallets into chairs is only one of a number of projects that offenders can do to repay their debt to the community. Community work programs vary widely, ranging from work programs such as graffiti removal through to cooking and soft toy making. Grampians Community Work Program Manager Nathan McDonald said offenders who completed the Crates to Craft program received accreditations in furniture-making from the University of Ballarat (now Federation University). Community work programs mean offenders have a greater chance of attaining employment after their community work is complete, he said. Or they have the option to continue with their education. Long Forest is a stinkin place

A SEVEN YEAR old girl has written to Moorabool Council and her corporate neighbours, begging for a vomit-inducing stench to be stopped in Long Forest. Alexis Bodon lives next to what she described as the stinky farm. The letter reads: To next door, Can you please stop spreading that smell on the ground. We cant play outside because it is so stinky. It makes us feel sick. Thank you. From Alexis. The letter included drawings of herself and fumes rising from the ground. Cr Tonia Dudzik read the letter out at the September 18 Council meeting and said it was vital property owners Victorian Wool Processors read it. Please dont just put it in the letterbox. Make sure they have received it, she told the meeting. I am very concerned about the quality of life people have near this property and how its affecting people. Chief Executive Rob Croxford later sent a copy to the smell gets into your clothes. Ms Bodon said the smell from the wool scour byproduct had lessened since September 18 but neighbours were still taking note of truck movements at the property. Moorabool Growth and Development General Manager Satwinder Sandhu told the October 2 meeting that Council had already engaged a law firm in case VWP failed to comply. In 2010 VWP bought the former farm which faces Long Forest Rd but backs onto Moonah Drive. The company was established in 1990 by Jim Kim and is Australias biggest domestic wool processor.

She heard us complaining and talking with neighbours, so she and her brother wanted to do something about it. Often she cant go out on a beautiful sunny day because of the smell. Its just disgusting. Ms Bodon said the smell was difficult to describe, but was a strong heavy odour similar to rotting meat. Its rancid not really like fertilizer at all more like a dead kangaroo. Trampolines become missiles

The local SES has had another busy week after severe weather lashed the Moorabool shire. Deputy Controller Operations, Bacchus Marsh SES Bill Robson said to date their volunteers have attended more than 50 emergency calls between the 26th September and the 3rd of October. Most calls have been for trees down blocking roads, as well as tiles missing from roofs due to the extreme winds experienced. The calls have been spread across all parts of the Shire, with no area seeming to escape the winds, he said. Mr Robson said they also attended four incidents involving airborne trampolines. Residents should be aware that trampolines can become missiles in high winds, often damaging roofs, solar panels, cars and fences as they fly through the air. We recommend trampolines are secured to the ground using sandbags or large pegs to prevent them from flying away. The damage by flying trampolines last week to cars and homes has caused thousands of dollars in

A rescue of a different kind for the SES, not related to storm damage, was uncovered in the roof of a Bacchus Marsh property. A cat had given birth to four kittens in the neighbours house with the SES carefully removing them before taking them back to their eager owners. All kittens and their mother were fit and healthy.

Moorabool sweats on final maps

THE FUTURE OF Moorabools long-awaited public indoor pool, Halletts Way extension and secondary schools is likely to be in the hand of a report due out this month (17 Oct). On October 17, the Electoral Boundaries Commission will release the final maps showing the new shape of Victorias State electorates. A draft released in June showed the marginal seat of Ballarat East would be abolished and most of Moorabool Shire would fall inside the proposed Buninyong electorate. The Stonehill Estate would be cut off from the rest of Bacchus Marsh by also falling within Buninyong. Darley and most of Bacchus Marsh would remain in the safe ALP seat of Melton. In July, Moorabool Council gave a verbal submission to the EBC, asking that the entire shire fall within Buninyong and that it be renamed the state seat of Moorabool.

Rescue in the Lerderderg

Just as Hawthorn and Fremantle were battling for victory in the AFL Grand Final, Ambulance Victoria paramedics, SES volunteers and Parks Victoria staff faced their own battle. A woman in her 60s had to be rescued in a marathon effort in the Lerderderg State Park at Blackwood after injuring herself in a fall on Saturday 28 September. Advanced life support paramedic Mark Lyszczarz said they were called just after one oclock to treat the woman who suffered shoulder injuries when she fell about two-and-a-half metres in the park. Thankfully they had a mobile phone and were able to call triple zero [000], Mr Lyszczarz said. They were also able to give us their location thanks to the emergency location markers installed in the park by Parks Victoria. We met Parks Victoria staff who took us about four kilometres along a track and then from there we had to hike for almost an hour to reach the woman. Overhanging trees and a steep embankment made it unsafe to use a helicopter to winch the woman out, so paramedics requested the assistance of SES volunteers. Mr Lyszczarz said two SES units were brought in for the difficult task of carrying the woman back to the Parks Victoria 4WD. The SES crews did a fantastic job carrying the woman in a stokes litter (rescue stretcher) over incredibly rough, steep and rocky terrain. Mr Lyszczarz said the whole rescue operation took about seven hours with the woman taken to Sunshine Hospital in a stable condition.

Honouring old avenues

MOORABOOL COUNCIL HAS thrown in-principle support behind projects to revamp the Coimadai and Yendon avenues of honour but a Bacchus Marsh war centenary project is in limbo. The towns RSL wants a $75,000 memorial garden next to its hall - to make use of the former library and shire office site in Main St and permanently create more space for open-air services. The proposal would include setting up a rose garden, memorial wall, donated war cannon and moving an existing roadside cenotaph from next door. But a report to the October 2 Council meeting said Moorabools budget had no money for extra strategic planning in Main St and the future of the prime CBD site had to tie in with the Bacchus Marsh Activity Structure Plan. Due to the considerations and implications arising from the plan adopted in 2011, the impact on the proposed greenway and the lack of a clear strategic plan for the precinct next to the library and rear of the hall, officers propose that the Council does not support the implementation of this project, it said. The Council may also wish to consider supporting this project if the RSL were to identify an alternative location. Authors said the subbranch would consider another site for the garden if it was co-located with a new RSL hall to help prevent vandalism. The existing building dates back to 1921, sits on Council land and was partly funded by the Shire of Bacchus Marsh. The report named Rotary Park in Young St as a possible new site as well as the much smaller Eddie Toole Place. Vance Moon Reserve was also mentioned, but this could be demolished if a new freeway interchange was built at the end of the Avenue of Honour. Meanwhile, councillors all voted to endorse using the former library site for outdoor memorial services on a casual basis. The Coimadai Avenue of Honour Restoration Association will need $155,700 over four years to replant 122 trees, according to the report. The group requested $4700 from Council including $2200 this financial year. It will also need $6200 in recurrent funding for tree maintenance. This will be the fourth reincarnation of the avenue, which has been lost to drought, theft and the construction of Merrimu Reservoir. The Coimadai project will also take in the relocation and restoration of a war memorial cairn on the Bacchus Marsh-Diggers Rest Rd.

The Yendon History Group will need $7700 to revamp its existing avenue and planting an extra seven oak trees. This includes $1200 from Council to buy the young oaks. The project will need $1200 in recurrent funding for maintenance. The existing avenue has nine mature trees in Yendon No 2 Rd (close to the former shop, public phone and library stop), but a report to Council said their spacing suggested more may have been originally planted. The project will also give the town an honour board, road signage and plaques on trees.

Farmers set to meet

By Kate Taylor The first meeting of Moorabools Rural Advisory Committee was held yesterday. The committee, formed to advocate to council the wants and needs of farmers in the district, consists of five members and Moorabool Shire Council CEO Rob Croxford confirmed he attended the first meeting on Monday 7 October. Central Ward Councillor Paul Tatchell helped found the committee and is positive about what it can achieve. Its exciting to consider that our rural community has an official voice, and can play an active part in the consultation process for all things rural; the founding members are energetic, informed and passionate about the world of Agriculture, and I am confident that the outcomes will reflect the environment they are developed from. There has been fantastic support from the Council and community on this committee; the committee will take a holistic view of the changing rural landscape, and the timing of an active committee could not be more prevalent in terms of the issues that lie ahead in the rural sector, he said. Committee member Kate Sharkey said that the first meeting focused on establishing a direction for the group in terms of long and short term priorities. The first meeting was just us looking at all the items, some of the projects that are big and not so big, things to start working on and to get a broad list of issues and start working on how we can action those so we can start getting some results, rather than having too much on a list and not getting anything done. Well work on whats most relevant, and what benefits the wider community, she said.

Fire Inspections have commenced in Moorabool

Council officers will be randomly conducting annual inspections of properties in the Shire prior to the declared fire period starting. The officers will be checking to ensure that property owners have been clearing any fire hazards. A Fire Prevention Notice will be issued to any property owner not performing the works as set out below: What to do Owners of land should perform the following works prior to the declared fire period or within the timeframes detailed on the Fire Prevention Notice. Residential Vacant Land and/or Properties generally up to 2 Hectares (5 Acres) Cut all grass and undergrowth to a height not exceeding 100mm and remove all tree/green garden waste and general rubbish to reduce the risk of the spread of fire. Other Land generally above 2 Hectares (5 Acres) Prepare 10 metre short grass firebreaks on all property boundaries to a height not exceeding 100mm and maintain up to a 30 metre break around dwellings, outbuildings and sheds unless directed by Council to create a larger area break. Please leave substantial trees, as clearing these trees may require a permit. Please note that there may be situations whereby a firebreak is better situated elsewhere on the property. Some properties may have established environmental values, covenants and/ or boundary windbreak plantings, regeneration areas and native grasses. These will require alternative strategies for fire prevention. Landholders should maintain their property in fire safe condition throughout the year, and in particular, during the fire danger season. Subsequent cuts may be necessary due to regrowth. What happens if I do not comply with the Fire Prevention Notice ? If property owners do not comply with the Notice Council will engage a contractor to carry out the works required on the Notice with all costs plus an administrative fee, to be charged to the property owner. An Infringement Notice may be issued. Failure to comply with this Notice may result in Council undertaking further legal proceedings for failure to comply with a Fire Prevention Notice. Please Note:There has been a significant increase in the penalties for failing to comply with a Fire Prevention Notice. An infringement Notice with a penalty of $1444.00 may be issued. The maximum penalty for failing to comply with a Fire Prevention Notice is $16,900 or 12 months imprisonment or both.
An information session explaining Bushfire Management Overlays will be held at Moorabool Shire Council Chambers, 15 Stead St, Ballan, on Friday 11 October at 7.00pm. Representatives from the Country Fire Authority will cover topics including: an explanation of Bushfire Management Overlays, how you self-assess your BAL (Bushfire Attack Level) rating online and how your BAL rating is assessed through the planning process. Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr Pat Toohey and Council staff will attend the meeting. Basic refreshments will be provided.

The Moorabool Shire Council Community Development Fund will open on 8 October 2013 and close on 8 November 2013. The Moorabool Shire Council Community Development Fund is open to community groups/committees, community networks, progress groups and development associations as seed funding (and leverage for external funding opportunities) to support community infrastructure projects that have a significant impact on community development, liveability and wellbeing in the Shire. Community networks, committees and other groups are eligible to apply for up to $25,000 funding with preference to those who can demonstrate: A contribution toward the cost of the project by cash or inkind support, The leveraging of funds to support external funding opportunities, A strategic base - the project is detailed in a community plan, master plan or strategic plan. Applicants are encouraged to read the Community Development Fund Guidelines carefully before making a submission. The Guidelines outline the specific eligibility and assessment criteria. The Lerderderg Library public gallery might just need more art space as 17 local artists display their work until the end of November. Curated by Ballan Arts Project, the MoorArtSpace Local Artists Exhibition presents work by artists living or working in Moorabool. Facilitator Sarah Peckham said the works on display offer a broad range of styles. Most works are for sale and include ceramics, acrylics, pastels, watercolours, drawings and photography. The Ballan Community House Life Drawing class is well represented and we have a variety of artists displaying their work who are members of an artists dinner group, she said. The Local Artists Exhibition will be on display until the end of November at the Lerderderg Library with free entry. Life Drawing classes are held in Ballan on Tuesday evenings at the Community House and the Artists Dinner Group meet at the Wallace Hotel on the first Wednesday of each month. All roads lead to music festival

MOORABOOL COUNCIL HAS given a cautious goahead for the Inca Roads Music Festival to be held in a Millbrook paddock over the last weekend of November. The three-day event could attract up to 650 people to the 8ha site on EgertonYendon Rd. At the October 2 Council meeting, organisers formally invited councillors to the festival. But objectors living nearby said Inca Roads had painted a misleading image of themselves and the festival would put at risk attendees, land values, crops, domestic animals, wildlife and tinder-dry bushland. I personally believe the festival is in a high-risk fire area, neighbour Sandra Siniawski said. I spoke with the CFA Operations Manager for the Ballarat region and he said he had not been told of the event. Cathleen Littlejohn addressed the meeting from her walker and raised fears about emergency exits, crop damage, high winds, an estimated 850 litres of effluent from portable toilets and the risk of e-coli. The revised planning application also doesnt show how illicit drugs will be dealt with, she said. Im also very concerned about the use of the term family-friendly event. Another neighbour, Charmayne Redfern, said the location had been posted on the internet in the past and was known to potential gatecrashers. I wouldnt take my children to this festival. It is not a family friendly event at all. It is for people in their 20s, she said. Also the site is just not suitable. If it is $140 per ticket, that means a possible income of around $70,000. Why cant they afford another venue? Ms Redfern told the meeting she was also contacted by an Inca Roads member who offered to work on her farm for free because

Cr Allan Comrie (against) I have no problem with the festival but its in the wrong place. If we have a warm day, a cigarette and long grass then theres going to be a fire. If it was at a reserve somewhere with plenty of room there would be no problem. Cr Tonia Dudzik (for) Moorabool needs to encourage young people and we dont get many opportunities to do this. The new report reduces the operating hours of the festival with a 12am closure. If the permit conditions arent met, it will never happen again. Thats it. Cr Tom Sullivan (for) Were trying to strike a balance and put some boundaries around this. This is not open slather. This is a permit with conditions 26 of them. This is not ideal, but at least now there are conditions that have to be dealt with. Cr Paul Tatchell (for) I had concerns about this festival at the last Council meeting and I still have them. We have heard many allegations and we have no way of testing them. This issue should also have gone to Councils emergency management committee. they wanted her objections dropped. Another neighbour, Gaylene Marshall disputed predicted noise levels in a report from Inca Roads because the sound was not measured at the 2011 or 2012 festivals. A report to Council said tests at the site boundary showed a 112dB sound at 1m (eg jackhammer) would register at less than 65dB at all surrounding homes (the level of normal conversation or laughter). Mt Egerton coffee van operator Katie Proksa said her generator operated at 73dB and she was still able to conduct a conversation at the 2012 festival standing next to the stage. We didnt think it was that loud, she said. My son thought the festival was awesome and my 12-year-old step-son also attended. Id go again with the kids in 2013. Mt Egerton Development Association President Andrea Shaw also backed the festival and told the meeting the late night noise was not a problem from her Fletchers Lane home. I do risk assessment as a profession and I think these boys have done a really good job, she said. Without these kinds of events, Mt Egerton just becomes a dormitory. It becomes a place where people just sleep then head off to work (elsewhere). We want a community and we desperately want events for young people in this community. The first two festivals held at the site did not have planning permits and an application for the 2013 event first came to Council on September 18. Council staff recommended the festival go ahead with conditions, but councillors failed to vote on the issue. It returned to the October 2 meeting with extra conditions. Cr Allan Comrie said the site was still unsuitable and voted against granting the planning permit. All other councillors voted for the festival to go ahead. Ms Littlejohn said neighbours would appeal in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. If another festival is planned for 2014, Inca Roads will need to apply for another permit. Another chapter in history

Just in time for the 150th Coimadai Primary School celebration, an updated history book on the school has been released. Acting Principal Moira Ross said she was delighted to receive the updated history of the Coimadai Primary School from its editor, Kaaren Bodon. The whole school gathered around to watch when the first issue of this update history book was handed over, she said. The book titled Coimadai Primary School 1863-2013, was compiled by Mary Flanagan and Margaret Simpson using previous histories, old inspectors reports and current school records. Ms Simpson said it includes an extensive photographic record of the schools people and activities over the past 150 years. Compiling the book has been a marvellous journey, just in time for the 150th anniversary of the school, which will take place on Saturday 19 October between 12 noon and 4pm, she said. The Coimadai Primary School 1863-2013 book will be on sale at the anniversary celebration along with other memorabilia. Ms Ross said they encourage everyone to attend and enjoy a BYO picnic lunch on the school oval whilst sharing and reminiscing the old school days with new and old school pupils.
Energy efficient schools

BUNGAREE PRIMARY is turning on the sun. The school is among 189 across Victoria that have secured $10,000 energy efficiency grants and Principal Calvin Tromp said theirs would be spent on skylights. We have a couple of classrooms that are so dark, we have to turn the lights on in the middle of day, he said. Were also using the grant money to put energy efficiency measures in place such as LED lighting and timers on the hot water system so its only being heated up just before its needed. The money will also be used to draught-proof the school. Bungarees oldest building dates back to the 1920s but the school is lightyears ahead when it comes to electricity. We already have about 60 solar panels, Mr Tromp said. We usually only use about half of the electricity generated, so the remainder has been going into the grid and making money for the school. Others to benefit from a $10,000 sustainability grant include Mt Egerton and Daylesford primary schools. The program is a joint project of Sustainability Victoria and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. A total of 400 grants are expected to be announced before the State election in November 2014.

Kate went on to say The Moorabool Shire has been supportive in its approach to the Committee, and is anticipating a productive relationship between Local Government and the farmers the RAC will represent. Councillor David Edwards Chair of the Peri-urban Group of Rural Councils, commented: The Rural Advisory Committee will provide a critical component in providing informed advice in the cause and effect on Agriculture within the Peri-urban challenges. Cr Edwards, along with Moorabool Shires Anne Donovan attended, Beyond The Edge Australias first Peri-urban conference at Latrobe University last week. Cr Edwards said The Conference clearly indicated the dramatic effects on regions within the zone, and the importance of understanding those effects on communities such as Moorabool. What is the Peri-urban, and whats it all about? Peri-urban areas are largely defined as the areas that surround our metropolitan areas and cities - neither urban nor rural in the conventional sense. They are the fastest growing regions in many countries. In Australia, they frequently extend 100 kilometres beyond the suburban edge and it is estimated that over a quarter of a million Victorians live in peri-urban areas. Its within the transition where the RAC can use coalface information to contribute to the process. Peri-urban is largely considered as a transitional phase in contested spaces with a wide range of uses such as water catchments, forestry, mineral and stone extraction, tourism and recreation, and productive farming, as well as offer-

Rural Advisory Committee kicks off

The Moorabool Rural Advisory Committee met at the Ballan Shire Offices on Monday night to set an agenda for the group over the next 12 months. The Section 86 Rural Advisory Committee will work in conjunction with the Shire to produce an advisory tool for Council, and Council Officers, in driving the future of agriculture in the Moorabool region. The committee has been buoyed by the positive commitment from Moorabool Shire CEO Rob Croxford in working with the group to produce positive outcomes. Farming in this country is constantly under threat, with continual pressures being placed on farming where the return on investment is largely subsidised by the culture, not the profit. Expensive farmland, high operating costs, and the commercial difficulties in farm development for new players is a constant threat to an industry too often taken for granted. The urban threat is adding yet another degree of difficulty to the already difficult. I applaud the Committee on their commitment and energy; Its up to all of us to protect and encourage Agriculture in our region. While watching this years AFL Grand Final a comment by John Naish, from his book, Enough - Breaking free from the world of more(Hodder & Stoughton, Great Britain, 2008) came to mind. In this book John Naish writes, Our society increasingly stimulates the wrong brain the primitive, lower, fear-driven, insatiable brain that sees the world only in terms of competition, consumption and famine. Pushed out of the equation is the higher cortex, the reasoning, altruistic human brain that we evolved to intercede in our primitive responses. Our over-accelerating, overstimulated, self-obsessed cultural environment marginalises the very brain mechanisms that make us such uniquely civilised creatures by coning down the various climate change organisations, was criminal? But these boys have been there before and these boys have gone before and there is always a better story, a higher story, a story that engenders hope and offers a way forward and includes us all, if we want to be part of this story. This time the story is of a group thrown out of office by the new government who didnt give in and accept this decision as final. Dr Tim Flannery could have been cynical or bitter or behaved like the boys when responding to the closing of the Climate Commission by the new government. Or he could have turned his back and thanked everyone and walked away. He could have given in. But he didnt. Instead he launched the Australian Climate Council that is dependent, no longer on the government, but on the generous donations of Australians. And in so doing has invited us all to join him. At the time of writing this piece he has at least 5000 Australians who are putting their hands in the pockets to support this new initiative. Now that, it seems to me, is the way to go, not only for Tim Flannery but for all of us. How about joining? What is your opinion? Big bucks boost for Council

MOORABOOL COUNCIL has had a massive cash windfall but on paper only. Chief Executive Rob Croxford said finance staff were using a more detailed way of assessing the value of its roads and that had caused a huge jump in their total value despite creating only a handful of new roads. Were revaluing roads in much greater detail, he said after the September 18 meeting. We took the value of our roads and bridges which was $315 million in 2011/12 and now use a system to work out how much they would cost to replace from scratch if destroyed. That means their value rose to $489 million last financial year. It hasnt changed overall Council profitability. The latest report to the Auditor General showed Moorabool had a $7.7 million net surplus for 2012/13. Mr Croxford said that money would mostly go towards capital works such as new or repaired roads and bridges. Since 2009 Moorabool has invested more heavily in roads, bridges, footpaths and other infrastructure. Overall, Council has a low financial risk. Were not flush with cash, but were in a good position now. The document also shows Moorabool received $3.7 million less in Operating Grants, due to a reduction in flood-damage relief funding. The completion of flood recovery projects also meant Council had $2 million more to spend on materials and services. Council reserve funds were also used to pay off a $2.3 million Defined Benefits Superannuation liability ahead of time. That scheme ended in 1993 before Moorabool existed but it guaranteed Victorian Local Government, library and water board employees a set amount of money on retirement. The report also showed that a Council property in Graham St Bacchus Marsh continues to be a burden. Its value was written down and it is still for sale, six years after Council bought the commercial-zoned parcel to attract a large retailer. Under the Local Government Act 1989, all Councils must have their financial statements signed off by the Auditor General each year.

There are many different calculations of the median price available to the public. While having more information can be helpful, it can also be confusing. Last month, the ValuerGeneral released the March quarter 2013 median prices. These showed a 5.4 per cent decrease in Melbournes median house price. And yet the REIV recorded a 3.1 per cent increase. So why is there a difference? The answer lies in the methodology. The ValuerGeneral publishes the raw (original) median price, while the REIV publishes a seasonally adjusted median price. Both are valid calculations and show a different aspect of the market. Other data providers like the Australian Bureau of Statistics provide original, seasonally adjusted, and trend series of their data.

The REIV adopted a seasonally adjusted median price to account for changes that occur periodically within the year. In general, median house prices increase in the December quarters and decrease in the March quarters. This is because there are more sales and more auctions during the December quarter. Conversely, by the March quarter, there are fewer sales and auctions. Prices of homes sold at auction are around 50 per cent higher than others. This is because many auctions are held in the inner city, so house prices are more likely to increase in quarters where there are more auction sales. Juke Kartel put the race beyond doubt in a couple of bounds as he raced away over the concluding stages to score by 14.1 metres in a rate of 1-59.2 from Find Time To Cruise and Statelyness. At Bray Raceway Ballarat on Thursday, Hopetoun Park trainer Ross Sugars combined with daughter Kylie to land the Ballarat Icecream Distributers Trotters Mobile for T0 class over 2200 metres with 4-Y-0 Earl/Kano Idol gelding Mister Beckham. Raced by Graeme and Marcus Rayner, Mister Beckham starting from the extreme draw was given a cosy trip three back in the running line, before scoring by 25.9 metres from the favourite Redy To Race with Framework Salute 3.1 metres away in third place.

Ballan Tennis Club Quiet please. The Buninyong & District Tennis season has begun. The senior A3 Ballan side took to the court at Mt Helen in their match against Goldfields/Mt Helen. It was the first game for the members of this team for a number of years and whilst they lost 2/36 to 7/65, the score didnt reflect the good hits and close games. Newcomers to the club Shane Woodroffe and Samantha Lee teamed up with Paul, Helen, Kristy and Darcy Tatchell with Kristy and Samantha winning their ladies match. Father and son, Paul and Darcy Tatchell won their match on a forfeit after their opposition players knee popped out! Next week the team plays at home against Miners Rest.
Oddly named former New Zealander Frank The Duck was successful in taking the Melbourne Cup Day Pace for C0 class over 2150 metres at Yarra Valley on Monday when making his first appearance on Australian soil. Trained by Joe Borg at Melton and driven by John Caldow, Frank The Duck a 4-Y-0 gelded son of Jeremes Jet and Take Her Easy Tiger was much too strong over the concluding stages for Ryans Lane and Lets Go Happy in a mile rate of 2-01.5.
Parwan duo Craig Demmler (trainer) and Jodi Quinlan (driver) landed the Telstra Business Centre Plus It 3-Y-0 Pace over 2200 metres with Mach Three/ Birthright colt Glenferrie Access in a mile rate of 2-00.7. Spearing to the lead from gate five, Glenferrie Access, despite racing fiercely, defied all challengers accounting for Keayang Active, which raced outside him, and Star Brutus, which followed the winner.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

The 2013/14 Little Athletics track & field season commenced last Saturday at Masons Lane Reserve, Bacchus Marsh. An impressive 220 children have registered in just the first week, including 27 new Under 6 registered athletes. Athletes are still welcome to register at any of the BMLAC competition days. The first meet saw five new U/16 records set. Jack Shaw (Eagles) recorded 45.96 secs in the 300m Hurdles and 26.28 secs in the 200m events while over in the jumps pit Jack leapt 4.98 metres in long jump to set his third record for the day. Brant Lopes (Dolphins) recorded a new record distance of 11.54 metres in the triple jump. Courtney Homewood (Boomerangs) threw the javelin 20.01 metres to better the previous record.
