Theatre work in Development with Opera Genesis at the Royal Opera House. Based on the assassination of Ninoy Aquino.
A one act opera for 5 singers and 6 instrumentalists, exploring themes relevant to its target audience of 14-17 year olds. Commissioned by WNO Max for a tour of schools and theatres in Wales and England in Autumn 2006. The story of a boy who screams for no apparent reason. A boy with problems of every sort: dysfunctional, disliked, trouble to teachers, an unwanted stat in league tables. This was his last chance. This was the first day at his new school. He had no intention of falling in love with the wrong girl.
Whirlwind
One act opera commissioned by Streewise Opera for a cast of 4 professional principals with a 3-part amateur chorus of homeless / ex-homeless people. Premiered at The Sage Gateshead in October 2006. Orch - fl/picc, hn, tpt, pno, gtr/elec gtr, 2 perc, vln, live electronics The tale of the lost Devon village of Hallsands, destroyed in a great storm in 1917 following several years of government-approved dredging. Whirlwind follows the story of Lizzie May Prettyjohn, the last survivor of the gales, as she guides tourists around the ruins of her village where past and present mingle together..
The Woodlanders
Music theatre piece in development as part of a residency at the National Opera Studio. Based on the 1886 novel of the same title by Thomas Hardy. Sequences from the show were presented at the opera studio in April 2006.
A two act opera runner up in the International Giuseppe Verdi Opera Competition 2001. A story of politics and human drama in the history of Jarrow miner Will Jobling, unjustly hanged for murder in the 1830s North East. A story first explored by Will Todd and Ben Dunwell in the 1997 Ballad of Will Jobling. Developmental/Production History - Written for the International Giuseppe Verdi Opera Competition 2001 where it received second prize. The work was produced in workshop form at the Royal Opera House Linbury Studio in September 2002 with the first fully-staged production at the Buxton Festival in July 2004.
90 minute music-theatre work for 12 actor-singers and pit ensemble. Orch - fl/picc, cl/bass cl, ten sax, hrn, trpt, trbn, elec gtr, bass gtr, drum kit, 2 perc/timps, pno, kbds, db Based on the true 1964 story of New Yorker Kitty Genovese who was stabbed to death outside her home while 38 neighbours watched from their windows Developmental/Production History - Developed at Opera Lab and the Eugene O'Neill National Music Theatre Conferences between 1998 and 2000 and workshopped as a full version at The ENO Works in 2000 and 2001. In September 2001, Kitty was chosen for the National Alliance of Music Theatre Conference in New York City, and had its first full production in a student showcase at the Boston Conservatory in October 2001. A workshop performance took place at New Yorks Public Theater in November 2004, and several staged performances at the New York Music Theater Festival in September 2006.
A one act opera for STB soli, chamber choir, childrens chorus and mixed ensemble (for amateur performers with professional soloists/instrumentalists). Duration 1 hour 10 minutes. Orch - 1.0.1.0. - 1.2.1.1. - pno, kit, accordion 2 vln, vla, vc, db Based on Norse Myths and commissioned for the 1999 Northlands Festival as their community opera project in 1999. It is designed to encompass movement, dance, singing, storytelling and acting and is a work about the power of stories and the circular nature of time.
Operatic musical in 3 acts with 13 roles and large chorus. Through-scored with a large orchestra - intended as an amplified show. Premiered at the Colston Hall, Bristol to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the launch of the SS Great Britain.
