that you are stranded on an island in a room, with not a single soul (except you), either inside or in

Directions for questions from 29 to 40: Read the passages and answer the questions given below:
Passage 1

When high tidal waves hit the Indian coastline the last time before December 26, 2004, they were not
called tsunami waves as they are now known. Ancient scriptures and literature have evidence that waves
from the Indian Ocean did hit the Nagapattinam coast in 900 AD and destroyed a monastery.

According to literature available in the library of Thondaiman kingdom in PuduKottai, Tamil Nadu, it
was during the reign of Raja Raja Chola that waves had washed away the monastery and several temples,
and killed hundreds of people. There is evidence of this even in Kalki Krishnamurthys novel Ponniyin
Selvan-The Pinnacle of Sacrifice.

In the chapter The Sea Rises, the author explains how the sea had risen so high it seemed to be touching
the mass of dark clouds suspended in the sky. The black mountain of water, far from being stationery,
was moving steadily forward. The sea inundated warehouses and sheds and began to flow into the streets.
Ships and boats seemed suspended in mid-air, precariously poised over the water peaks. The book also
describes how the gushing waters swallowed an elephant.
According to Vijay Kumar Thondaiman, brother of the Thondaiman prince, the library of the royal family
of Pudukotti had a collection of 12000 books dating back to the17th century. These books talk about the
Buddhist monastery-Raja Raja Chozan went to conquer Sri Lanka and instead became a devotee of the
Buddha himself and allowed the Buddhists to build a temple in Nagapattinam. It was around that time
that the monastery was totally washed away.

More about such havoc is described in the great epic Sillapathikaram, written in Tamil 2000 years ago
by Elango Adigal, a Jain monk. He has recorded how Cauvery Poompatinam, now known as Poompuhur,
was destroyed and even today, we find the ruins excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India. It talks
about the sea waves that came and destroyed the place. The waters came inland and evidence of
destruction of temples is still there. A whole township and its people were forced to shift to drier lands.
They are now the Chettairs, a leading business community of Tamil Nadu, who are supposed to have
existed from the Sanagm age.

Passage 2

Science fiction is coming alive. A laser beam- a painless zap of light- is making incisions, vapourizing
tumours, closing blood vessels, reducing pigmentation, and treating skin wrinkles. Technological
advances are on to newer applications of future generation of lasers.

All laser surgeries use the principle of selective photo-thermolysis, choosing a specific amount and
wavelength of laser energy for a particular tissue. Different types of lasers are available of which each
type works in a different manner, and is used for different treatment options.

Lasers have made their way into cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face, eyes, ears and nose. The
use of lasers in cosmetic surgery is almost 50 to 60 percent. Initially lasers were used to remove port-wine
stains, spider-veins, and hemangiomas. Then came hair removal, photo-rejuvenation, removal of
wrinkles, and removal of pigmentation, freckles, birth marks, and tattoos. For each procedure, different

types of lasers are used and the power has to be adjusted according to the skin colour, explains Dr.
L.D.Dhami, practicing cosmetic, plastic and laser surgeon attached to the Nanavati Hospital, Mumbai.
Lasers are also used to transplant hair and in surgery to stop snoring and even relieve pain, adds Dr. Sri
Ganesh, fellow, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Medical Director, Netradhama, Bangalore. Laser
is also used for refractive surgeries, retinal surgeries and glaucoma surgeries of the eyes. Lasik Laser
surgery for correcting refractive errors of the eye is an effective and safe surgery when done with good
equipment and experienced surgeons.

Every surgical field today makes use of lasers in surgery. Surgeons have started using laser as a light
scalpel, as Dr. Yatish Aggarwal, a senior faculty at the Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and
Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, puts it, Laser as a surgical tool is a revolution because of its high
precision, quickness, and its ability to cut and coagulate tissues without causing any damage to the
surrounding healthy tissue.

However, even with the sparkle, pure colour and high-energy beam, the laser may not always be the best
tool for surgery. Certain lasers may temporarily or permanently discolour the skin of a dark-skinned
person. Some types of laser surgeries are not advisable for pregnant women and individuals with cardio-
pulmonary diseases or other serious health problems. Imprecisely aimed, lasers can burn or destroy
healthy tissues.

34. According to the passage, what does laser surgery involve?
1. It involves newer applications of future generations of lasers.

1. Removal of pigmentation.
2. Retinal surgeries.
3. Glaucoma surgeries.
4. Refractive surgeries.

36. Which of the following is not a benefit of laser surgery?
1. Its quickness.
2. Its ability to cut and coagulate tissues without any damage.
3. Its ability to be a revolution.
4. Its high precision.

37. Which of the following is not a drawback of laser surgery?
1. They are not advisable for pregnant women.

Answer is (2).

3. The LCM of {1, 2, 3, , 200} has to be divisible by each of the numbers fro 1 to 200 and has to
be the smallest such number. Thus the LCM would be the product of the highest power of all
primes that are present in any number from 1 to 200.

The highest power of 2 that appears in any number from 1 to 200 is in the number 128 and is 2
7
.
Thus the LCM has to be a multiple of 2
7
so that it is divisible by 128. Similarly the highest power
of 3 that appears in any number from 1 to 200 is in the number 81 and is 3
4
.
Lets take any other prime, say 37. From 1 to 200, all multiples of 37 i.e. 37, 74, 111, 148, 185 are
divisible by 37 and thus we need not have 37

in the LCM.
Now consider the set {101, 102, 103, 104, 105, , 200}. The LCM of this set has to be divisible
by each of these numbers. And has to be the smallest such number. Thus again the LCM would be
the product of the highest power of all primes that are present in any number from 101 to 200. i.e.
LCM =2

all other prime appearing till 200
Please note that while 81 is not present in the numbers from 101 to 200, a multiple of 81 i.e. 162 is
present and thus for a number to be divisible by 162, it has to be a multiple of 3
4
.
The same logic goes for any other prime number. E.g. take 61 or 97 both of which are prime. They
are not present in 101 to 200, but their multiples are present and thus the LCM has to be a product
of 61 and 97.
By this logic the LCM of {101, 102, 103, 104, 105, , 200} would be exactly same as that of
{1, 2, 3, , 200}.
The set in the denominator is not {101 to 200} but is from {105, 106, , 200}. From 101 to
104, the only prime numbers is 101 and 103. Thus the denominator need not be a multiple of 101
and 103. But the numerator would be a multiple of 101 and 103. Rest all the factors of the
numerator and denominator will be the same. Thus the ratio =101 103.

7. Total surface area of a cuboid =2(lb +bh +lh) (i)
Increased surface area =2(1.1l 1.1b +1.1b 1.2h +1.1l 1.2h)
=2(1.21lh +1.32bh +1.32hl) (ii)
The ratio of (i) and (ii) is dependent on the values of l, b and h and thus the percentage increase in
the surface area is also dependent on the values of l, b and h.
To confirm, put values and check.
Putting l =10, b =10 and h =5, Initial Surface Area =400,
Increased Surface Area =482, Hence Percentage Increase =20.5%
Putting l =10, b =20 and h =5, Initial Surface Area =800,
Increased Surface Area =880, Hence Percentage Increase =10%

If the weights of the two pieces are x and (4 x) gms, their combined value is x

13. Here the reduction in speed of the engine has to be measured from the case when there are no
bogies. Else the data would become inconsistent. Please understand that this is not an assumption
and has to be deduced logically from the questions. Consider the train runs at speeds of S
1
, S
2
and
S
3
when there are 2, 4 and 6 bogies (the values are taken arbitrarily to explain the above). Now the
reduction of speed when there are 6 bogies would be measured from where? From the case when
there are 2 bogies or from the case when there are 4 bogies? If we measure from the case when
there are 2 bogies, we get S
3
S
1
=36k and if we measure form the case when there are 4 bogies,
we get S
3
S
2
=36k. If we measure the reduction from the case when there are 3 bogies we will
get yet another relation.
Also consider the statement the speed reduced when there were 6 bogies attached. Since the
reduction in speed is due to the 6 bogies attached, we should measure the reduction from the case
when there were no bogies attached.
Say, the speed of the train when number of bogies is zero is S.
Then S 120 =14
2
k and S 100 =16
2
k.
Subtracting the two, we get 60k =20 i.e. k =1/3.
Substituting k =1/3 in either equation we get S =185.33
The reduction in speed when there are 20 bogies will be
20
2
3
=133.33
Thus speed of the train =185.33 133.33 =52 kmph.
So, the answer is (3)

16. Method 1: Using weighted averages
Working with the milk concentration, using the weighted average concept, let x be the
concentration of milk in the resultant solution. Since the solution is increased by 25%, it means that
the ratio of the volume of the original solution and water is 4 : 1.
x =
0.44+01
4+1
x =

25

The ratio of milk and water in the resultant solution is 8 : 17.
Method 2:
Since volume is increased by 25%, the ratio of final volume to initial volume will be 5 : 4. Since
pure water is added, the concentration of milk will be inversely proportional to the volume. As
volume is increasing the concentration of milk will decrease and that too proportionally i.e.
concentration of milk after adding water will be
2

. Thus ratio of milk and water is 8 : 17.
Method 3:
5 litres of solution will have 2 litres of milk and 3 litres of water. 25% of 5 litres i.e. 1.25 litres of
water is added to the original solution. Now ratio of milk and water is 2 : 4.25 i.e. 8 : 17.

22. 3
The speeds of A and B are in the ratio 3 : 4. Since A covers 180 mts, B would cover 240 mts in the

would be 420/15=28 and 420/20=21 seconds.

a <b and c is positive
Dividing both sides of the inequality by c, a positive number, retains the inequality sign. So a/c
<b/c. Thus, the first option is false.
a <b and if both a and b are of the same sign, then 1/a >1/b. Multiplying both sides by c we get c/a
>c/b. So statement 2 also need not be always true. It will be true only when a is negative and b is
positive.
Nothing can be said about option (c) as only one side is divided by c.
Option choice (d) is always true because on multiplying both sides of a <b by the positive number
c, we get ac <bc.

9. Answer option 4
Wine =7/18, water =11/18. If the first glass can hold 18 units, it will contain 9 units of water and 9 of
wine when full. The second glass therefore can hold 36 units and thus contains 12 units of wine and 24
units of water when full. After the transfer, the tumbler will have 21 units of wine and 33 units of water.
Which gives 21/54 units of wine (=7/18) and 33/54 units of water (=11/18).

10. Answer option 1
1.8 inches, then another 2.2 inches. Initially the volume of water is 6 * 9/12 =4.5 cubic feet. The first
cube effectively reduces the cross-sectional area of the tank to 5 square feet, causing the water to be 4.5/5
foot =10.8 inches deep. Thus it rises 1.8 inches. The second cube is then placed on the floor of the tank,
the cross-sectional area is 4 square feet up to a height of 1 foot, and this is filled by 4 cubic feet of water.
The remaining 0.5 cubic foot, in a cross-sectional area of 6 square feet, requires a height of 0.5/6 foot =1
inch. The water is therefore 13 inches deep and has risen by another 2.2 inches.

14. Answer option 4
120mph: if the one-way distance was 1000 miles, the outward journey took 1000/285 hours and the return
journey took 1000/76 hours. Therefore the total time taken was (1000/285 +1000/76) hours for 2000
miles. So the average speed was 2000 / (1000/285 +1000/76) which equals 120mph.

4 hands: since each person shook a different number of hands, the totals must range from 0 to 8. Now the
person who shook 8 hands must have shaken the hand of everyone except their sibling, so their sibling
must be the one who shook 0 hands. It follows that the persons who shook 1 and 7 hands must be siblings,
since we must have that 1 only shook with 8, 7 with everyone but 0 and 1. In a similar fashion the persons
who shook 2 and 6 hands must be siblings and the persons who shook 3 and 5 hands must be siblings.
Since the only number left is 4, it follows that Amit must have shaken 4 hands.

Assume speed of the current to be 10 miles per hour and speed of the boat to be 30 miles per hour. Since
boat B travels 60 miles in still water, it will take 2 Hrs. Boat A will travel at speed (30 10) for 30 miles
and at (30+10) for another 30 miles taking a total of (30/20)+(30/40) =2.25 hrs. Clearly A will take more
time than B.

30. Answer option 4:
The train from Delhi to Chandigarh will meet all the trains which started 7 Hrs. before this train leaves to
7 Hrs. after its own departure. So that makes 7 trains which started before this train, 1 train which started
