Lesson Plan (Physics Form4)

Lesson Plan

Time : 80 minutes (double period) No. of students : 40 Level of proficiency : 4S3 Theme : Forces and Motion Topic : Momentum Learning objective : Analyzing momentum Learning Outcome : By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: 1. state the principle of conservation of momentum 2. define collision between two bodies 3. problem solving ; determine final velocity of a body after collision. Skills involved : 1. ICT skills 2. Critical thinking Content : 1. Whole-class discussion 2. Interactive learning Teaching Aids : 1. Simulation set 2. Transparency Previous knowledge : 1. define the momentum of an object. 2. define momentum (p) as the product of mass (m) and velocity (v) i.e. p = mv [kgms-1]

Stage/Time Content Presentation/Rationale Set Induction 5 minutes

Quiz on previous lesson; a) momentum b) problem solving Teacher divides the class into four groups. Teacher gives quiz to the groups on previous lesson. Rationale To start off the days lesson

Development Stage 1 10 minutes Whole-class discussion Material: Teaching courseware

Teacher shows examples of collision in daily life. Teacher asks students to relate collision with momentum. Students answer the given questions based on the collision shown. Students are given hints such as velocity, mass and number of bodies. Rationale Students are informed the concept of momentum in collision.

Stage 2 40 minutes

1. Explanation 2. Pair work Material: Transparency Simulation set

Teacher explains to the students about conservation of momentum. Teacher shows the equation of conservation of momentum.

Teacher explains the conservation of momentum using simulation set . Using the set, teacher explains how to determine the velocity of the bodies. Teacher gives different situations and calls upon students to respond showing how to determine final velocity of a body after the collision using the simulation set. Students in the group asked to determine the final velocity for equal mass and unequal mass. Students are encouraged to cooperate each other while the teacher observes their action. Teacher-student discussion. Rationale Students learn to think and apply the theory to solve the problem.

Stage 3 20 minutes Group-work Material: Handouts of questions Teacher gives handouts of question for each group to solve.(Appendix A) Students in groups discuss the questions and determine the values using the simulation set. Students are to present their discussion to the class. Rationale Critical thinking on solving the problems. Student will explore the simulation on their own(ICT Skill)

Closure 5 minutes

Teacher sum up the lesson of the day Teacher asks the students to prepare for next lesson; elastic and non-elastic collision Teacher goes through the days lesson Students are asked to be at the Physics lab for the next lesson

Appendix A

Question A A ball of mass 0.8kg strikes a wall at a velocity of 10ms-1 and rebounds at 6ms-1. What is momentum, before striking the wall and after the rebound?

Question B An astronaut of mass 90 kg moves with a velocity of 6ms-1 and bumps into a stationary astronaut of mass 100kg. How fast will the two astronauts move together after collisions?

Question C A 50kg skater is travelling due east at a speed of 3ms-1 before colliding with another skater of mass 60 kg travelling in the opposite direction at a speed of 7ms-1. After the collision, the two skaters hold on to each other. In which direction will they move? What is the speed of the two skaters?

Question D A trolley of mass 3kg moving with a velocity 0f 2ms-1 collides with another trolley of mass 05kg which is moving at a velocity of 1 ms-1 in the same direction. If the 0.5kg trolley moves at a velocity of 2.5ms-1 in the same direction after the collision, what is the velocity of the 3kg trolley?

Question E A bull of mass 250kg is moving with a momentum of 750kgms-1. Find its velocity.
