CLASS 3/4 BULLETIN TERM 4, 2013

Literacy
The Literacy block includes a reading lesson and a writing lesson. It will occupy our morning session most days between 9 and 11 oclock. Reading time starts at the first school bell, 8:55am. Children are expected to enter the classroom, hand in their red reader bag, get their book box out and sit on the floor ready to begin the day with the roll. This is the time for students to transition from home to school mode. The reading lesson begins at 9am. During Term 4 students will continue to develop reading comprehension strategies to help them understand and remember what they read. The strategies will be: Visual texts Fact and opinion Paraphrasing Authors purpose A daily writing lesson will follow the 10am fruit break. During Term 4 students will work on developing their writers skills (eg/conjunctions, power verbs, etc). Children will be free to choose their writing topics on Fridays and be encouraged to publish their work using different media (eg/ word processing software, book, online, reading to another class). Word study, vocabulary, editing and handwriting skills will be taught in context as part of regular writing sessions.

Maths
Maths sessions will begin at 11:30am most days of the week. Teaching and learning experiences will assist students to reason and approach problems mathematically. Maths concepts will be taught throughout a variety of experiences: problem solving activities, picture story books, outdoor learning and work on paper. Mega Maths is completed each day and quick maths on Wednesdays. Focus areas this term will be: Chance and data Graphing Fractions Division Symmetry and geometry Multiplication Space, shape Money/financial Pattern/algebra

All students at Malmsbury PS are expected to complete some learning tasks at home each week. This is a good opportunity for parents to become involved in their childs learning. For Grade 3/4 homework will be: help your child to plan and practise for an engaging, 2 min show & tell each week share reading time together every day and talk about the story/article afterwards practise multiplication facts and number patterns play chess, backgammon, snakes & ladders, yahtzee, battleship or other games which sharpen up mathematical thinking. use their Studyladder accounts (www.studyladder.com.au)
