INEFFICIENCY IN CONSTRUCTION PROJECT

Survey done in America

30% of construction resulted in rework

Projects can take 20% to 50% longer time to complete than as planned

10% of construction materials are wasted

due to conflicts

We shape a safe, high quality, sustainable and friendly built environment.

KEY THRUSTS OF PRODUCTIVITY ROADMAP Building Information Modelling (BIM)

An integrated process

Allows professionals to explore a projects key physical and functional characteristics digitally before its built.

The Smart Market Report 2008

The McGraw Hill Construction

300 to 500% ROI 82% reported productivity improvement 79% reported fewer VOs and onsite
problems

76% reported better visualization

IMPROVEMENT IN PRODUCTIVITY
Engineers Australia Queensland Division Task Force 2005 report
estimates that 60-90% of all variations are due to poor project design documentation BIM is one way of significantly improving design and documentation quality

We shape a safe, high quality, sustainable and friendly built environment.

IMPROVEMENT IN PRODUCTIVITY
Stanford University Centre for Integrated Facility Engineering (CIFE) figures based on 32 major projects using BIM:
Up to 40% elimination of unbudgeted change orders Cost estimation accuracy within 3% Up to 80% reduction in the time taken to generate a cost estimate Saving of 10% of the contract value through clash detections Up to 7% reduction in project time, and Return on investment when using a 3D model of 5-10 times

We shape a safe, high quality, sustainable and friendly built environment.

IMPROVEMENT IN PRODUCTIVITY
University of Colorado-Denver Health Science Centre
By Mortenson Construction (US) Project Size: 50,160 m2 Total Project Cost: $200M (162M) Project Duration: 32-months Direct Comparison of Similar Buildings 1. Research Facility R1 used Traditional Construction Management 2. Research Facility R2 used BIM/IPD -780 (37%) fewer RFIs = $585,000 savings in RFI Administration - 6 Weeks Reduction in Programme = $900,000 saving in Prelims - 50% reduction in MEP labour & scheduling - 0% rework to concrete structure - Reduction in Variation Claims from $4m (R1) to <$20,000 (R2) - Total Cost of BIM/IPD (Hardware, Software, Labour) = $315,400
We shape a safe, high quality, sustainable and friendly built environment.

- Net Saving to Project (Savings less Cost of BIM) =

$1,169,600

ADOPTION OF BIM BY OTHER GOVERNMENTS

Statsbygg, Norway 2010 Requires the use of IFC/BIM for new buildings Norwegian Defence Estates Agency Is running three BIM pilots Senate Properties (property services agency), Finland 2007 Requires IFC/BIM in its projects and intends to have integrated model-based operation in future

U.S. Army Corp of Engineers 2008 Mandatory BIM for all projects

U.S. GSA 2008 Mandatory BIM submission for government projects

UK 2011 Announced that BIM will become key part of the procurement of future public buildings

Korea 2012 Public Procurement Service will fully adopt IFC-based open BIM
