They are magical because the moment they appeared on screen every knitter in the audience went Ooooooooo, I want to knit that! My version of her mittens are knit in the round and designed with a large circumference so they will bunch nicely around your wrists. And if youd like them longer you can continue the color pattern as long as you have yarn to knit with.

pattern instructions
CO 52 sts in A. Place marker and join for working in the round, being careful not to twist stitches. Work in a k2, p2 rib for 1/2". Knit one row increasing 3 stitches evenly around 55 sts. In St st, begin color pattern (see reverse for chart); work in pattern until piece measures 8 1/4" from co edge.

1 skein each of Knit Picks Andean Silk 50g/96 yds: a) Cranberry, b) Cerise, c) Flamingo, d) Merryweather, e) Imperial, and f) Sangria

needles
DPN size 7 (4.5mm) needles, or size to obtain gauge Stitch markers Stitch holder or scrap of yarn

thumb gusset
Continuing in the color pattern, k 26 sts, place next 10 sts on st holder or scrap yarn; join yarn and k remaining 19 sts 45 sts. Continue knitting in pattern for 6 more rows. Choosing one of the two colors you are working with, and dropping the second color, k2 tog and k remaining stitches 44 sts. Next row, [k2, p2] until rib measures 1/2". Bind off loosely in rib.

22 stitches and 20 rows = 4" in pattern

thumb
Choose one of the two colors on the stitch holder to use for the thumb rib. Pick up two stitches from gap and sts from st holder, join for working in the round, and k one row 12 sts. Work in k2, p2 rib for 1/2". Bind off loosely in rib. Weave in loose ends.
