Well; Daylight savings time started this past weekend, spring training is in full swing, the trees and flowers are starting to bloom and Spring Break for the kids should be starting any time now, It must be Spring. Thanks to everyone who attended the March Luncheon meeting, we had another great turnout. Mr. Don Behrmann P.E. gave a very informative presentation on The Evolution of High Efficiency Water Heaters. The 2012 ASPE Convention and EPE will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina from th st October 27 to the 31 . As an incentive to our members the board has decided to send one of our Full Members as a delegate and reimburse that person for their registration, airfare and lodging. We will select that member based on how many general chapter meetings they attend from January thru May of 2012. We will then pick from the ones who have attended the most meetings. ASPE Illustrated Plumbing Codes Design Handbooks. Please remember to register at the sign in table before each meeting for your chance to win one of four copies of this book at our last meeting of the year in May. The 2012 Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) exam will be held on Thursday April 19 th th and Friday April 20 with registration already opened. You will have until March 19 to complete the registration process so just go to ASPE.org for more details or contact Stacey A. Kidd with any questions that you may have. Also, ASPE as a supplement to your studies for the exam is rebroadcasting the four-part CPD review webinar series. If you purchase the entire series by March 29, you will receive a free copy of the CPD Review Manual (a $50 member value). Participants will be able to interact with the presenter through a dedicated blog site. McClure Engineering will be recognized as an Honor Roll Employer at the June Presidents Meeting here in St. Louis. The ASPE Honor Roll of Employers is a unique program of recognition for organizations that provide substantive support for their employees participation and involvement in ASPE programs. Our next meeting is April 3rd at the Engineers Club. Hope to see you all then.

Our speaker last month was Mr. Don Behrmann P.E., speaking on Evolution of High Efficiency Water Heaters and how to obtain all of their benefits.

MEMBER Jack Bruns, P.E. Mike Haenel Jeff Kuehn CPD John Merle Norman Merlo Scott Moseley, P.E. James Mackey Sid Trojahn Mark Miller Mike Todd Steve Rosen

Since 1998 2010 1996 1998 1976 2006 2010 1983 2010 2003 2011

Some of the highlights are as follows: Why know more about high efficiency water Heaters? We need to know as much as we can of state of the art equipment and systems and hopefully with that knowledge we can advise our owners and customers of the benefits of our expertise. As a result of the Oil Embargo by OPEC in 1973 & 1974 the United States realized its vulnerability to fuel shortages due to its dependence on foreign energy sources. Since then the U.S. has tried to reduce its consumption and rely more on domestic sources. A major emphasis has been on research to increase the efficiency of all fuel burning devices. Because of the embargo, we had to realize that we needed to reduce our consumption or other foreign countries would have a big hold on us. The government wanted us all to consume less energy, from turning down your thermostat to 68 degrees during the day and 60 degrees at night. In our industry the consumption of energy for domestic water heating is significant, so for us to support our country, we needed to minimize our consumption of energy to heat domestic water. From there, he went to explaining the following terms: Steady-State Efficiency, Standby, Overall Efficiency, High efficiency, Low Mass Water Heater, Flueway, Dew point of Water Vapor in products of combustion from natural gas, NonCondensing mode operation, Parallel flow heat exchanger, Counter flow heat exchanger, Excess air in combustion process, Radiant Heat transfer, Forced convection heat transfer, precipitations of solids (lime deposited versus temperature and water use), Efficiency loss due to scale.

VP Legislative Report
By: Paul Hellickson
Welcome to springtime in St. Louis. As is typically the case, there is nothing typical about St. Louis weather, so enjoy it while you can because tomorrow it might be snowing Code Updates: A recent change in St. Louis County is that the Chief Plumbing Inspector position has been permanently filled by Barry Ramsey. Bob Gerber the interim Chief has resumed his position as the Assistant Chief Plumbing Inspector. I spoke with Al Snyder the Plumbing Inspection Supervisor for the City of St. Louis, the City of St. Louis is getting closer to finally coming to a decision about adopting the 2009 UPC. This has been in the works for quite some time, so it will be nice to be able to finally put this thing to rest. Researchers develop new system to eradicate bacteria in hospital water supplies For those of us that are more involved in the hospital side of our industry you might be interested to know that researchers at Dublin Dental University Hospital have developed an automated water disinfectant system to eradicate microbial contamination in the hospital's water supply on an ongoing basis. Opportunities to increase water heater efficiency: *Increase Steady-State efficiency by improving combustion process *Chemical reaction formula for combustion of natural gas which is primarily methane gas *Balance formula *Substitute air in formula, which is 20% oxygen and 80 % nitrogen *Convert to volume *10 cf of air required for each cf of natural gas to achieve perfect combustion *Additional combustion air above 10 cf per cf of natural gas is excess air *Increase efficiency by reducing excess air via better air/fuel mixing *Increase Steady-State efficiency by improving to counterflow heat exchanger design. *Change to forced convection heat transfer, which results from turbulent flue gas flow made possible by fan assisted burner and forced water circulation through heat exchanger *Operate in condensing mode when possible *Reduce standby loss from heater flueways *Reduce standby loss by minimizing burner cycling rate *Reduce standby loss from hot water storage tank *Reduce maximum water temperature during heating process while still complying with code requirements to avoid legionella bacteria *Minimize precipitation of solids and their adherence to heat transfer surfaces Other topics: *Evolution of high efficiency water heaters *Standard & Medium efficiency low mass heater application *High efficiency low mass water heater application *Water heater design advances are beneficial to owners and the USA. Don ended his presentation by answering some questions and received a nice round of applause. Our April 3, 2012 meeting will be on Hydro Mechanical versus gravity grease interceptors Capturing the Grease and will be presented by Rand Ackroyd of the Plumbing and Drainage Institute. He will discuss the best management practices for capturing grease and Oil before it enters the drains. Operation of gravity and Hydro mechanical grease Interceptors, sizing and installation of interceptors, Plumbing Code requirements, are also covered. These programs are complimentary by the Plumbing and Drainage Institute and are presented by Rand Ackroyd, the Executive Director of the Plumbing and Drainage Institute. PDI is an association of manufacturers of engineered plumbing products commonly referred to by the mechanical side of the construction industry as the drain business. Their members and licensees make products such as: Floor drains, roof drains, sanitary floor drains, cleanouts, water hammer arresters, swimming pool drains, backwater valves, grease interceptors, fixture supports, and other drainage specialties. Mr. Ackroyd has been associated with PDI for 15 years and is an active member of IAPMO, ICC, ASSE, ABPA, ASME, AWWA and USCFCCC. He received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University. His career began in 1972 with plumbing product design with Watts Regulators. After 25 years in product development, in 1997 he founded Rand Technical Consulting LLC. Mr. Ackroyd participates in the development of Model Plumbing Codes and Plumbing Product standards and provides engineering expertise for litigation. His consulting also specializes in all aspects of plumbing and hydronic heating disciplines with areas of expertise include backflow prevention, pressure regulation, temperature control, and safety pressure relief valves. Eric and I attended his presentation at the 2011 symposium in Orlando and it was very informative, please plan on attending this outstanding program. Our Last Meeting of the 2011-2012 year will be in May and we will have Mr. Rich Lussier from TOTO speaking on Water Efficient Plumbing. Please plan on attending our meetings and invite a potential member to come along. If anyone has some suggestions for future programs, please contact me or any of our board members.
