GOES TO VIRGINIA TECH

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Greetings to you all! We sincerely hope the summer is going well for your family and scholars. Thus far, we have seen a lot of great learning,
growing, electives, chants and more!

This letter is to provide you with the information you need to confidently send your child with Higher Achievement to Virginia Tech, located in
Blacksburg, VA. Please read its contents completely, review and sign the permission slip, found on the third page, and send it to Center NO
LATER THAN THURSDAY, JULY 23rd.

Scholars will report to Center on Tuesday, August 4th at 8:00 AM as usual. We will eat breakfast as usual at Center and load up the buses to
depart shortly thereafter. Please pack a brown-bag lunch for your child to eat en route on Tuesday. The first meal served on campus will be
dinner on Tuesday evening. We will return to Ludlow Taylor Elementary School on Thursday, August 6th by 4:00 PM; please be on time to
pick scholars up at the regular time (4:00 PM). As a reminder, August 6th is also the last day of Summer Academy.

What to Bring: What NOT to Bring:

*Sleeping bag/Warm Blanket *Anything that is valued over $50!
*Pillow *Money
*Several changes of underwear *Excessive clothes
*2 towels (1 for swimming, 1 for shower) *Excessive candy or beverages with caffeine
*Swimming suit
*3 changes of clothes (pants and shorts)
*Appropriate clothes to sleep in
*Tennis shoes
*Sunscreen
*Toiletries (wash cloth, towel, soap, tooth brush, tooth paste, contact solution, etc.)
*Shower shoes recommended
*Water bottle
*Umbrella/poncho
*Book bag
*Notebook, pencil, and pen (and any other materials for class)
*Medication (if necessary, and with explicit instructions)
*Optional—Healthy Snacks (for trip on the bus)
*Optional—Portable CD players and/or game machines—(These may be brought for the bus ride only. If they are played outside of the bus they
will be confiscated until one week after we return. Further, no more than five CDs may be brought. Finally, Higher Achievement will not be held
liable for their loss or damage.)

Expectations for Scholars:

Please remember and discuss with your child that this is a very special trip and that we will be guests of Virginia Tech. Scholars’ conduct must
be outstanding at all times. Scholars must be reminded that they are to follow Higher Achievement staff’s instructions at all times to ensure
the entire group’s safety and general well being. Failure to do so will result in consequences such as loss of free time, isolation during meals,
or phone calls home.

Consequences for Scholars:

Depending on the severity of an incident that occurs on the university trip, a scholar may be sent home from the university. In this event, a
parent or guardian will be notified immediately and will be expected to come and pick up the scholar immediately. Examples of incidents that
will result in immediate removal from the trip include, but are not limited to, the following:

*fighting
*stealing
*destruction of property
*being in areas of campus that are off-limits to Higher Achievement
*engaging in “hazing” activities that make others uncomfortable or feel humiliation (e.g. “toothpasting”)

Event: University Trip to Virginia Tech

Dates: Tuesday, August 4th through Thursday, August 6th

Location: Blacksburg, VA

Logistics: Scholars must arrive at Center at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4th!! Send your child with a
brown-bag lunch to eat en route on Tuesday. All other meals will be provided. We will be chartering a
bus to go to Blacksburg, VA and will return by 4:00 PM on Thursday, August 6th. Please plan to pick
your scholar up at that time.

PARENT’S/GUARDIAN’S ACKNOWLEDGEMENT:

As the parent or guardian of __________________________, I understand the nature and scope of Higher
Achievement Program’s events and activities at Virginia Tech (VT). Further, I assume all risks resulting from his/her
participation in Higher Achievement’s events/activities to be conducted at or about VT, relative to VT, and I
understand that VT is not sponsoring or responsible for Higher Achievement’s events/activities; and further, that I
will hold harmless VT, its trustees, officers, employees and agents, and any and all affiliated associations, from any
and all liability, causes of action, claims and demands which may arise in connection with or resulting from his/her
participation in Higher Achievement’s events and activities at or around VT.

I give my son/daughter permission to attend this trip and engage in all activities associated with the trip, as
described above. Further, I knowingly assume all risks that may result from his/her participation in these Higher
Achievement activities. I ALSO AGREE THAT TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, I HEREBY WAIVE ANY AND ALL CLAIMS,
LAWSUITS, ACTIONS, OR DEMANDS AGAINST HIGHER ACHIEVEMENT THAT ARISE OR MAY ARISE IN CONNECTION WITH
HIS/HER PARTICIPATION IN THESE HIGHER ACHIEVEMENT ACTIVITIES. THIS WAIVER INCLUDES ANY CLAIMS OF
NEGLIGENCE, OTHER TORT CLAIMS, OR OTHER ALLEGATIONS OF WRONGDOING BY HIGHER ACHIEVEMENT OR ITS
EMPLOYEES. BY SIGNING BELOW I WAIVE ALL SUCH CLAIMS TO THE EXTENT ALLOWED BY LAW. Nothing in this waiver
limits my rights against any parties other than Higher Achievement and VT.

FINALLY, I UNDERSTAND THAT I WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING MY CHILD TO AND FROM MY CHILD’S CENTER ON TIME
