A former U.S. president showed his misunderstanding of science by saying that he was not troubled by the idea of evolution because it was just a theory. 2. Theories and laws are very different kinds of knowledge. Myth 2: A hypothesis is an educated guess 1. For instance, when Newton said that he framed no hypothesis as to the cause of gravity he was saying that he had no speculation about an explanation of why the law of gravity operates as it does. 2. In this case, Newton used the term hypothesis to represent an immature theory. 3. Finally, when students are asked to propose a hypothesis during a laboratory experience, the term now means a prediction. 4. As for those hypotheses that are really forecasts, perhaps they could simply called what they are, predictions.
