Dear Parish Family and Friends: Fall is my favorite season of the year. What is your favorite? I will share my top five reasons why fall is my favorite. Number one: less heat to deal with outside; number two: a reminder that in order for there to be new life, the old must pass away; number three: the beauty of Gods creation might be enjoyed; number four: a new time of learning begins to grow closer to God; number five: a sense of being refreshed and renewed and looking forward to what God has in store for me each and every day. I can also add maybe the best reason to enjoy the season of fall this year: I have called a new priest to work with me in spreading the Good News both within and outside the walls of Saint David of Wales Church! You will read a letter to the parish by our new Curate, Father Clint Wilson, elsewhere in this issue of Wales Tales. Father Clints arrival will impact every single member of our parish family. How so? Shared leadership. Part of our job as clergy is to raise up new, and hopefully, improved leaders for God and His Church. Your vestry has become very forward looking in its approach to ministry. As we did a self -study of the make-up of our congregation, it became abundantly clear that like most churches, we are an aging congregation. Thanks to our former Senior Warden, Tommy Caruthers, we embarked on a youth movement; literally. First was to bolster our Christian Education for youth which has been accomplished under the hiring of Joyce JonesDuffey. Next was the intentional switch of format at our 5:00 p.m. Sunday liturgy to be more college-age (emerging adults) friendly and that was accomplished through our in-house musicians and now the hiring of Father Clint to our clergy staff. Our next emphasis will be on families with young children and it will be exciting to see what we, working in conjunction with the Holy Spirit, will develop and offer our congregation.
These are truly exciting times in the history and life of the parish. In addition, we are about to re-dedicate Saint Augustine of Canterbury Chapel that will have a new floor, some new walls and some spiritual wall hangings to give the chapel a more inviting, prayerful appearance. The final pieces of trim work are being done thanks to the handiwork of Dave Mays and Tom Williams and the many donors, who will be recognized for their generosity. Small measures of faith can make huge differences in our common life together. We now have a brand new Junior Daughters of the King chapter for the girls of our parish because some current members of the Daughters of the King believed it was important for the parish and particularly these young women to grow spiritually in their love of God and neighbor. Thanks to Betsy Kensinger and all who have worked so hard to make this new ministry a reality. It is not too late for others to join in this new ministry. It is a very good thing to be a loving, believing Christian today. It is an even better thing to be an active, loving, believing Christian. How is God calling you to work in the parish for the up-building of her people? These, truly, are exciting times in our history. See you in church.
Dear Saint David's Community: Theresa and I are so happy to be joining in ministry with you here in this town we have so quickly come to love, Denton. Canon Herrmann and I thought it might be good for you to know a bit more about our journey
here and our background in life and ministry, so I have prepared a 73 page infographic to be handed out...just kidding. I (Clint) was born in Birmingham, Alabama, where I was raised and attended college. I am happy to inform you that I am an Alabama football fan--hopefully this does not disqualify me for ministry in Texas! Theresa was born in Mobile, Alabama, on the coast, but she spent the majority of her life leading up to college living in the country of Panama where her parents were missionaries. We met in college and were married after my first year of seminary and have been happily married for over six years now. I attended seminary (the first time) in Denver, where I focused in on the academic discipline of Biblical Studies as I thought I wanted to be a professor. God eventually called me to the priesthood through our local parish, and we ended up at Nashotah House Theological Seminary to finish my Master of Divinity degree (Father Herrmann is also a "son of the House"). Theresa's passion in life is leadership development of college students and student affairs in higher education. She has worked in her field for over 10 years and hopes to find a position at either UNT or TWU soon!

A Call to Prayer
Deacon Carol Hobson
The Church has always been under persecution somewhere in the world. There have been martyrs throughout the ages. When we think of Christian martyrs we may think first of those believers who were martyred under one of the Roman emperors. In modern times, however, there have been many martyrs from the civil rights unrest in the 1960s in our own country to Christians in South Africa, Rwanda, Uganda, Indonesia, and now throughout the Middle East. Most recently were those killed in the mall in Kenya because they could not answer a particular question about Islam. Christian churches are burned and bombed, ministers and missionaries are jailed, and believers are tortured and even killed simply for their beliefs in Christianity. They desperately need our prayers! We in the US feel only a slight pressure against Christians in schools and our workplaces or when the separation of church and state is argued. But we have such freedom here to practice our religion. Its easy for us to go our merry way, back and forth to Church every week, and never think about what other Christians are going through. We would like to call the good people of Saint Davids to a season of prayer and fasting for the month of October: for peace in all the world; for a cessation of persecution of Christians throughout the world; and that a spirit of wisdom will rule the governance of tribes and nations. You may say that what is going on in the Middle East is a family feud going all the way back to Cain and Abel. God is a big God and He solves big problems. Please consider a fast on Wednesdays in Octoberor abstinence from sugar, salt, Starbucks, television, or whatever you are given to do. Evening prayer will be said each Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. prior to the healing liturgy, with special emphasis on prayer support for those suffering for their faith. There will be news articles and scripture references and other material available for you to use, or take home.
What are our passions in ministry? In no particular order, they are: outreach/mission, youth/college/young adults ministry, preaching/teaching, relational discipleship, and leadership development. We have varying degrees of experience in all of these areas and look forward to how they are expressed at Saint David of Wales. In our down time, we love to spend time with our dog, Denver (a female Lab/Chow mix), do all things outdoors (hiking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, etc.), watch movies, play games, listen to music, discover amazing restaurants, go on road trips, and, more recently, explore Denton and the surrounding area! Because we both love being with people, doing all the above with a group of friends is an added bonus. I hope you find our presence here to be a blessing to the church and the city of Denton. I would especially love to connect with you and hear your story as well. Please take any opportunity you have to connect with me so we can set up a time to meet in the coming months (I will have a church email address and phone number soon). It is a privilege and honor to be entrusted with ministering to this community and we are excited about how "God's will may be done on earth as it in heaven" here in Denton.

you can compete. Relax! There really are twenty names of Bible books in this story. If you fail to find them theres a penalty. Youll have to go fly a kite, sit on a banana, hum the Battle Hymn of the Republic, or hose a dog (a mean one). Get to it! I will give you the answers next month so hang onto your puzzles! I give you fair warning, one answer is very, very tricky. Have fun! How Has Saint Davids Been Involved?: We have a number of parishioners that volunteer for The Gathering. Some come to hand out food while others provide music for the service. How Can We Help?: As part of his ministry and formation in the diaconate at the Stanton Center, Lee Stafki, in coordination with Canon Herrmann and Deacon Carol, has volunteered to work with the congregation at Saint Davids to provide food for one Sunday service this year. We will be providing the food necessary to make the meals. We need to collect enough food to feed 95 people. Another congregation in the Diocese has partnered with us to prepare the meals, putting the food into sack lunches, and passing out the meals after the service. The Meals: We have found that sack type lunches which include a sandwich, chips, fruit, and cookies or other sweets can be the easiest for both the churches and our homeless friends. We need lunch meats, cheeses, bread, chips, fruit, and snacks. In addition we need to provide bottled water for each meal served (approximately 4-5 cases). What to Do & When to Do It: A roster is posted in the narthex to sign up to bring food. This ensures that we get enough of each type of food to make all 95 lunches. Please sign up now! All items must be collected no later than November 15. Items will be stored in the parish refrigerator and freezer so you can bring items sooner than November 15. If you have any questions please see Lee Stafki.
What is The Gathering? The Gathering is a ministry of the Diocese of Dallas to feed the homeless in downtown Dallas. Each Sunday, volunteers gather at Thanksgiving Square in Dallas, conduct a worship service and then provide nutritious meals for homeless friends. Approximately 95 meals are provided each week to those in need.
Had the leaders of the thirteenth century heeded this preacher, many of the disasters of the following three centuries might have been avoided. Robert was a peasant lad from Suffolk, born about 1175. He distinguished himself at Oxford in law, medicine, languages, natural sciences, and theology. He became what is now called Chancellor of Oxford University.
In 1235, he was elected Bishop of Lincoln, in area the largest diocese in England. He promptly visited all the churches in the diocese and quickly removed many of the prominent clergy because they were neglecting their pastoral duties. He vigorously opposed the practice by which the Pope appointed Italians as absentee clergy for English churches (collecting salaries from said churches without ever setting foot in the country). He insisted that his priests spend their time in the service of their people, in prayer, and in study. He went on a pilgrimage to Rome, where he spoke out boldly against ecclesiastical abuses. Back in England, he spoke against unlawful usurpations of power by the monarch, and was one of those present at the signing of the Magna Carta. Grosseteste's scholarly writings embraced many fields of learning. He translated into Latin the Ethics of Aristotle and the theological works of John of Damascus and of the fifth-century writer known as Dionysius the Areopagite. He was skilled in poetry, music, architecture, mathematics, astronomy, optics, and physics (one of his pupils was Roger Bacon). His writings on the first chapter of Genesis include an interesting anticipation of modern cosmological ideas. (He read that the first thing created was light, and said that the universe began with pure energy exploding from a point source.) He knew Hebrew and Greek, and his Biblical studies were a notable contribution to the scholarship of the day.
